CHAPTER: 11

"Maan Singh!" Jodha's mouth had become wider in wonder, and she even forgot to close that. The rider of the black horse wiped out his sweat from forehead and then removed the edge of turban that had partially covered his face to protect that from the scorching sun and dust of dessert, and a glowing smile shined from a glowing youth face. "Who else, Buasa?" He sniggered and simultaneously jumped down from the horse back.

It took a little more time for Jodha to replace the expression of surprise with glee; then she almost shouted in excitement. "But how Maan?"

"Let me take breath fast!" The young man, rather boy smiled profoundly. He is a complete teenager, have not crossed 15 even as it is visible from his young, bright and innocent face. Jodha's elder nephew Maan Singh, the elder son of prince Bhagwant Das and the first son of this generation of the clan as well, has some time yet in his hand to let his pure green heart contaminated falling in the riddle of politics and royal regulations completely, but his sharp intellect along with understanding personality has learnt to understand more than his age and simultaneously to find the solutions as much as possible. That compels him to respect his young aunt who is not much elder than him by age from the deepest of heart. And that very respect always tends him to help her at any cost, by doing anything possible from his place! The bright smile that he witnesses at the first place after helping her by any means becomes the most precious achievement for him- just like now. "You arranged so many things within 24 hours that too all alone! How do you do all these Buasa?" He told in an awestruck voice while looking at the busy view of the camp. Jodha smiled looking at him. "I did nothing Maan, all took place automatically as they were the need! I was just a medium. But your help will do a lot for them dear!" She touched his cheek affectionately. "How?"

"Now leave that part Buasa, you know that Dadasa can't say no to me!" Maan Singh winked. "He is very happy as the deal of your marriage is almost finalized with the Kunwar, and so it did not take much time to get the permission of sending some ration to this camp from the royal stock. And also you almost had pursued Baapusa and he was willingly going to open the royal treasury for you, only Daadasa was angry, but... you know, he cannot win against me." He smiled. But Jodha was unmindful. "It seems you are not happy with this deal' of marriage?" She asked hiding her sigh in her charm of voice.

"No, why won't I? Rather I would always love to enjoy the grand celebrations Buasa..." Maan Singh smiled back. "But it is surprising that you are not excited for marriage. Maasa and Daadisa were discussing that..."

"What?"

"That all the girls become extra-conscious about beauty and ornaments before engagement, and here you have absolutely no interest on this ceremony; rather you are spending time along with these homeless vagabonds!" Maan Singh smiled sarcastically. "Now who will make them understand Buasa, that only the princess of Amer knows what is the need of situation, and for what and when one should become conscious!"

"Shhh Maan!" Jodha touched her lips with finger and pulled him to a lonelier place. "Be careful that none gets to know about me!"

"They won't Buasa. The princess of Amer is more than a Goddess to them, and one cannot expect to see his Goddess in front of his eyes!" Maan Singh smiled profoundly. "But one more thing Buasa, Daadasa has taken a promise from me from your behalf."

"Promise?" Jodha chuckled with a question mark in eyes...

"He does not want you to do anything which will tell upon the reputation of you and your clan." Maan answered after a little bit hesitation. "In short he fears that the freedom that he has given to you, may not be liked by the prince of Bhangarh; the to-be husband of you!"

Jodha stood silent for a while with a sarcastic smile shining at the corner of her lips. "I will keep it in mind. Suryabaan Singh will not get any scope to complain!" She assured after a moment.

Maan's eyes were touched with a slight shadow of gloom. While trying to wipe that out he gave another information. "You need not be much careful though. Kunwar Suryabaan Singh does not know about your involvement with this camp and he is not going to come to this way as much as I guess! He is going to have a sight-seeing of Amer today, and it will obviously not include witnessing the poverty and the helplessness of the state..."

"None wants to see the dark shadow just at the bottom of the lamp Maan! All wants to be happy with the happy parts of life." Jodha smiled delicately noticing his hidden apathy.

"It seems you have become smart enough to defend your future husband Buasa?"

"I am not defending anyone. I am just describing the fact. You know Maan, it is easy to overlook the dark and to live happily in the happy part; but only he can win who has the courage to find a slight ray of light amidst the dark, and the passion to wipe out that darkness forever with that same ray of light." Jodha suddenly broadened her smile. "But it seems our Maan Singh is not happy with my future husband?"

"Does it matter at all?" Maan smiled sadly.

"Oh it does the most Maan!" Jodha said. "I don't know about others, but it is necessary for me. I need to know my future and there is only one person in my family who will tell the truth about it!"

"It is not that I have any problem with him Buasa..." Maan exclaimed. "But..." he stopped.

"But what?"

"But I think..." he looked at her eyes. "I think he does not deserve you!"

"Maan Singh! He is the heir of one of the strongest power of Rajputana. He is a great warrior, a highly accomplished prince. He is famous for his patriotism and love for motherland in this young age only!"

"What is patriotism Buasa? Does motherland only contain dust and soil?" Maan Singh smiled. "How can one demand to be a server of his land when he has no connection with the people live in his motherland? Is patriotism only a show-off of the pride of own clan always, Buasa?"

"I don't think there is any wrong in being proud and passionate about the glory of own clan Maan Singh!" Jodha said with a delicate smile in face. Maan Singh smiled back... "Certainly not Buasa, but I don't think there is any credit to show patriotism only by cursing and badmouthing the enemies without going into the depth of solution. Suryabaan Singh's love for his soil is often enveloped by his hatred for his enemy land! "

Jodha stared at his face for some time. When the pride and passion of a king only revolves around his throne, clan and land but without any attachment of human hearts, when the rules and moral values which have been made for the betterment of society get detached from the social life, destiny chooses another man for the common lives automatically, and the cycle goes on and goes on...

Who will save Rajputana from this grab of destiny? Who will save the pride of her clan and her motherland?

Jodha's web of though broke as someone interrupted. "PURNIMA BAI..." A lady voice... must be Moti, seeking for her help in some case. "Ok Buasa, let me go now! I too have to join with Kunwar Suryabaan Singh. He must have completed half of his Amer visit by now... I heard he has planned to visit the border areas of the fort too... the Kali Maa's temple which had been attacked some months back you know... he was telling that he is interested in..."

"Maan!"

"What?" Jodha's worried face with frozen voice put a pause in front of Maan Singh's enthusiastic description. He noticed with utter surprise how Jodha's face became pale in fear just after the mention of the temple...

"Are they really going to visit Kali Maa's temple? But why?? That's not a part of our fort... I mean what is the need... why the hell they are going there damn it!!!" Her irritated as well as tensed voice made Maan Singh even more surprised. "Yes, Kali Maa's temple. Why? May be the place is abandoned now, but once it had been the most sacred place of this land in our belief... and you too go for worshipping there even now. Then why will he not visit the temple?"

"Maan Singh! Save me!!!" Jodha cried!

"What?"

In tension Jodha started cutting the nails with teeth. She can't even imagine what can happen if the royal escort spots Chandrajeet by any chance around the temple! And what even worse can happen if it gets revealed that she has given him shelter! Vijay Singh will not be able to manage anything- in fact he will be at stake! Now who will save the situation! "Maan! I am requesting you dear! Please... you have to stop them!"

"Wha...t? why??" Maan Singh was too much confused!

"At least..." Jodha was gasping. "At least stop them from going near the huts around! You... you go Maan! Please! I will explain you later!"

"Is there anyone in those huts Buasa?" Maan Singh was about to shout now. "Who?"

"A good man! I... I don't want him to be caught anyway! I will explain you later Maan! Now you go please!" Jodha requested again. Maan Singh nodded with a lot of questions in mind, and got on the horse to set off towards the abandoned temple.

Whatever might be the situation, he has faith on his Buasa!

Jodha kept on gazing at his path for some moments with worried face, and then went back inside the camp. There is a lot of work to do still now!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

"You must be very happy Vaiydji, to get an opportunity to involve yourself in such a great work of serving people?"

Vaiyd Sadanand smiled softly while applying the medicated paste on the wound of Jalal's feet. "I am grateful to Kunwarisa, my son! Here is none in this land apart from our Kunwari Jodha Bai who thinks for the poor people!"

"She is great indeed!" Jalal uttered quite unmindfully while his eyes drowned in respect. The next moment his expression changed and he frowned. "Such a big accident has taken place in central market area, what are the steps taken by the majesty of Amer? Only a rescue camp on single effort of the princess is not sufficient I think?"

"Well..." Vaiydji bit his lips. "The citizens of Amer will be compensated and the vendors from outside will be refunded with their taxes and all. And also the new build-ups have been started... You know, our Kunwari Sa is getting engaged very soon... so the arrangements are quite large..."

"Hmm I understood!" Jalal sighed with the frown intact. The scene of devastating fire started floating in front of his eyes; the screams of those poor people started ringing inside his ear... A king's first responsibility is to ensure his subject's happiness- but this primary responsibility often get bounded by hundreds of secondary rules and conditions, sometimes caused by some own selfish reason! Why?

What would Jalal do if he was in the place of the king? Suddenly his heart filled up with a stinging dissatisfaction.

"I am directly coming from the medical camp. So got late to arrive here..." Vaiydji smiled after tying the bandage over his feet. "But it seems someone had already come to help you..."

"Do you know anyone named Purnima Bai?" Jalal asked readily.

"Purnima Bai!" The doctor's eyes became larger after hearing the name, but Jalal hardly noticed as he was looking at the bandage of his feet. "Yes, Purnima Bai. She said she is an attendant of Kunwari Sa. Do you know her?"

"Yeah... I mean no... Heard her name somewhere... maybe in the camp..." Vaiydji stammered.

"Oh!" Jalal casually looked at the plate of food placed nearby. "She had come last night... to heal my wound and to offer me food and water... she is..." he uttered with a lost voice with eyes shining suddenly in an unknown emotion. "Well... leave it! Thank you so much Vaiydji. You may go and take rest now, I will manage myself." He controlled himself at an instance and smiled decently.

"I am alright son...thought to accompany you for some time... what name had you told, by the way?"

"I didn't." Jalal smiled. "I am Chandrajeet Rathore."

"Rathore! I knew it. Your physique and eyes tell that you are a Rajput warrior by born." Vaiydji seemed to be elated after knowing his identity. "You are born from Rathore, then why were you roaming in the lanes of Amer like vagabonds?" He asked with a little surprise.

"I had no work so had come here to search for work... if by any chance could get a chance in army..." He lied very believably. The doctor became much happier. "Then you have come into the right place. Kunwar Sujamal is training a new big troop for defence. You'd get a job definitely."

"New army for defence?" Jalal repeated with a slight frown. "Why? For Mughals?"

"Mughals are still very far Chandra beta..." The old man chuckled. "Right now a lot of eyes are on our land. There is a rumour that the recent fire in market was a conspiracy of Ajabgarh's king! First let us save ourselves from neighbours, then will think about those barbarian looters!"

"Don't you think you're quite underestimating the Mughals?" Jalal smiled very reluctantly. "They are not mere looters, they have come to reign here. It will be good for Amer to prepare herself for Mughal attack too."

"Now we have nothing to do, we are mere commoners. King will decide the best for the land!" The old doctor's eyes shone in a strange trust and conventional belief. "It is not so easy to defeat the Rajput soldiers; they fight with all their heart and vigour for their king! Those Mughal monsters have no strength to break the shield of the soldiers and to capture our Amer!"

"Yes you're right!" Jalal uttered in a lost manner. "A Rajput soldier will always fight with the last drop of his blood for his king!"

"The sons of our soil take birth with open swords in hand... our land gives birth to the warriors... " Vaiyd Sadanand informed with a great pride on his face. "A lot of young lads join in the temporary training camps to train themselves for war... each and every dweller of our land is a warrior..."

"So the majesty of Amer gives the facility and scope to the young warriors to train themselves? This is great!" Jalal was looking at his face very minutely.

"Yes, Amer's king secures the pride of his motherland in every possible way! Let you to recover first, then I will arrange everything to enlist your name in camp... Vijay Singh, a soldier of Kunwarsa's troop, had a good relation with me once... the princess too is a fond of me... you need not to worry about your identity documents..." Vaiydji kept on talking in his own way, while Jalal looked at the sky through the window. The bright sunlight and the heat of the dessert is ogling fire outside. God knows where Abdul is! Has he managed something to get help to be out of this place? Else this old man will really send him to the troops of Amer going by his enthusiasm! Old innocent forgetful old-man, still the pride of the warrior race is shining inside the eyes... Rajputs love war, they are born warriors... there is a great source of energy in each and every heart of this dessert land... only it is needed to utilize that energy completely... Are the authority of this small territory has that ability to utilize this great source of energy for maximum gain? The clan is no doubt passionate about war, proud of their root, over-emotional about their possessions. But do they know to balance? They don't... The royal authority of Amer is training large troops for defence, but still unaware of the Mughal spies roaming around; the emperor of Mughals trespassed into their fort so easily but they are still unknown about it... the royal family members are proudly securing the pride of their clan, but are unable to ensure the least facilities to the poor homeless subjects brutally affected in fire at market place... The concrete base of the kingship of Amer is rusting slowly, very slowly... this news would never have come to him unless he himself came here, and feel this by witnessing everything!

A great source of energy is stored inside the base of the pillar of this great rajput territory, but the head of the pillar is shaking, can fall anytime... No need to demolish the whole pillar, just a little jolt is needed to misplace the topmost block of the pillar and to get onto that... the never-ended source of energy will be utilized by him who will sit at the topmost of the pillar.

You do not need to cut down a head always to get the control over it...

A slight smirk came and disappeared from the lip of Chandrajeet Rathore in an instance of time. This is not a time of war. This is a time to think, to change the mindset, to concentrate upon the war-strategy... the strategy that will help to enroot his step at the depth of this vast land...

He remembered the incident of that small disagreement that took place a day before he left for Amer. Nowadays he cannot rely blindly on Khan Baba that he used to do in his childhood. After a large conquest the Mughal troops had come to Ajmer to seek blessings. "We would verge for another mission of conquering Rajputana..." Khan Baba decided suddenly. "The states of Rajputana are not united right now, they will bow down in front of us very easily. Like a storm we will attack, and will devastate everything..." He declared.

Khan Baba always had been an umbrella over both the heads of Jalal and the whole Mughal dynasty. His decision is unshaken, unforgiving and inexorable in this empire... but Jalal did not admit this one as a wise decision of a wise leader. "We need to gather more information about the land we are attacking. We should not be harsh while taking a big decision like war." He had commented, in his usual cold and measured of speaking which amplifies the gravity of his powerful aura, increases his authority. But his tone was decent, obedient and dominated as well, particularly keeping it in mind that his Khan Baba should never feel insulted. Khan Baba had patted on his back, commenting- "War is itself harsh, Jalal! We are warriors, the god has given us the fire, and we should utilize it every way... Warriors can never wait for the right time!"

"But an emperor can... An emperor has to..." Jalal had answered back. "The fire of war does not only burn the enemies, it burns us too... There is no intelligence in jumping inside fire without any precaution."

"Do you fear to go in battlefield Jalal?" Khan Baba had mocked.

"Not at all! I only want to ensure our maximum benefit and minimum loss." Jalal sniggered. "We know nothing about Rajputana... nothing about the mentality of those people, about their systems, their style of war. Let us explore those first. Let us know the soil of the land of warriors before conquering it!"

"I don't feel that will help us much anyway! We are here to win the land, not to research on the social life of this land..." Khan Baba had told half-heartedly. "What is the necessity of wasting time behind a small territory like this? A sudden and brutal war will make everything much easier and faster."

"No Khan Baba!" The passionate warrior inside the young emperor had smiled in a royal manner. "Let's stop war brutally, let us win war strategically. Not with the power of muscle only, but with a little bit of brain too!"

Not only in the craziness of seeing the princess for once, the strange addiction towards this land, his grave passion of knowing this land of sand dunes have drove him in this risky situation today... But it seems destiny wanted this... he was needed to know about this land directly like this... to feel the situation actively like this... it will help him... will definitely help him to win...

"Chandrajeet?"

"Yeah!" Jalal got back into the real world and smiled looking at the Vaiyd. "What were you thinking?" The doctor asked.

"About my mother... she must be very worried!" Jalal did not hesitate in telling such a lie! "O dear!" The old man drowned in sympathy, and started telling a story from the collection of his colourful experiences of whole life. Jalal amusedly concentrated on him. These days are going to be the most memorable ones in his life.

Suddenly a slight sound of swishing of horses... outside... the sound is coming closer! "Shhh!" Jalal warned the doctor by putting finger on his lip then slowly crawled near the window to peep out. Damn!!

"Yeah Khuda!" Jalal was going to exclaim, but somehow controlled him... Sadanand's eyes have been popped out with his face to lose its colour has become absolutely white in terror. "Royal flag of Amer... the escort is from the palace of Amer..." he informed after a lot of difficulty!

Jalal gulped and his hand automatically tightened the grip of the knife which was hanging from his waist. But no use of this, he will not be able to combat with so many armed people with a small knife and one leg. He hid himself against the wall and peeped again. Royal escort... a handsome young prince just got down from his decorated horse and went inside the broken temple... thank god! But the guards are walking around. God, please don't let them to come right here...

"K...kunwari... Jodha will save us... I hope..." the old doctor stammered in an almost muted tone. Jalal frowned looking at him to order him to be silent, but could not be angry on him looking at the condition of his face.

If he is caught anyway by the royal authority of Amer, and if by any chance if 1% of his identity gets revealed, he has no chance to return in his own land! No Kunwari Jodha will come to save him! "Yeah Khuda!!" Let them to be casual enough or kind-hearted enough to overlook this abandoned huts!

His wish was fulfilled very soon. Just the moment the prince came out of the temple and was about to move towards here, some other prince probably, in a black horse rushed towards him, they exchanged very cordially, and it seemed from distance that the second prince, who is rather a boy in age, almost pursued him to leave this place. They were out of danger at last.

"Phew!" The old doctor sighed. "He is the to-be- son-in-law of the king. Kunwar Suryabaan Singh! Kunwari-sa's marriage has been fixed with him."

"He had come to the temple, not for investigation." Jalal smiled in amusement. Prince Suryabaan Singh is the prince of Bhangarh; by this alliance of marriage Amer and Bhangarh are joining hands... Maybe the Rajputs are uniting their forces again. What will win- their strategy of uniting the whole strength of Rajputana, or the conflicting and divided, never-bending attitude of the different Rajput clans?

Whatever may be, it is important to give Rajputana some time; the kings will decide their path first, and that will help the Mughals to build their war-strategy concretely, methodically and as perfect as possible! Whatever may happen, Jalaluddin Mohammad cannot effort to lose a grand source of energy from this dessert land which will help him to enroot himself and his dynasty's root to the depth of this vast country!
