SUKOON

Sumo's eyes sought the clock for the umpteenth time in the last 2 hours. The clock struck 12 and a frustrated grunt left her lips. She threw the magazine she'd been reading since the last 20 minutes but had not been able to understand a single word written in, on the coffee table in front of her.

"Itni der ho gayi... kaha reh gaya hai Shravan... ab tak to aa jana chahiye tha..." she mumbled under her breath as she moved towards the dining table and sat on the chair that was his personal one. Her fingers itched to dial him and order him to be back home the very instant. But his words on their wedding night came back to her. He had very explicitly told her that their marriage was only namesake and that they are free to live their lives the way they wanted.

"Suman...I have married only because this was something Nanaji had asked as his 'gurudakshina' to papa and if he had denied, it would have hurt Nanaji and that would have bothered papa... and I can't let anything that will bother papa happen... Hamari shaadi ke maayne nahi hai.. tum apni zindagi jiyo aur mujhe apni jeene do... is ek chhat ke neeche hum do ajnabiyo ki tarah rahe toh yeh tumhare aur mere... dono ke liye behtar hoga..."

His sharp words had pierced her heart till it bled but she had just nodded in a yes, her throat too clogged to say anything coherent. She had been thinking to tell him that she held no grudges against him and that she wanted to stay with him, being his best friend again but he had not given her any chance. She sighed coming back to the present day. She had not seen him in the whole day. The second day after the wedding, he had taken up a case for some huge company and had been working on it day and night. Sumo had rarely seen him at home in the last 3 days but today he was much late than usual. 12 was too late for him to be in the office and her heart was beating louder and louder in her chest as every single long minute passed, her brain trying hard not to think anything unpleasant. She caught hold of her phone but her fingers hesitated to swipe on his name to call him and disturb him. She knew he hated her interference in his life and he'd be mad if she tried to behave how a wife did.

It had been less than week to their sham of a wedding. Shravan had neither made her feel like a newly wedded wife nor behaved like a husband even for a single moment but still she was satisfied with how her life had shaped up. Though the woman in her sometimea craved the attention of a husband but then being able to see him sleeping, all sprawled on the bed like a baby the first thing after waking up, being able to rightfully sit on the chair beside him on the dining, go with him in parties and gatherings as his wife, being able to be in the same room with him and see him doing his teensy weensy daily chores, getting ready for office, running on the treadmill, offering him coffee etc were enough for her to brighten her days. Every night lying on the couch she would smile to herself remembering those moments while her eyes would have their fill of his beautifully crafted face and body, staring at his supine form with all the love she had for him. The day he had saved her from Aditya, she couldn't help but fall for him all over again. The tears that day had not only washed away her pain but her complaints from life too. She had promised herself to take a step ahead and rebuild her friendship with Shravan, no matter how much time it'd take as a token of gratitude for what he did to protect her but then the wedding came as a surprise and the way it occured was no less than a shock. But in hearts of hearts the feminine dreamy Sumo couldn't help but feel giddy with the bout of happiness that threatened to spill out of her whenever she realised she was now Mrs. Suman Malhotra. The lawfully wedded wife of Shravan Malhotra... who happened to be her first friend, her first support and her first love.

"Puttar... tu inni raat ko yaha kya kar rahi hain... soyi nahi ab tak..." Kaamini's chachi's groggy voice broke her chain of thoughts. She turned around to see her coming towards her with a jug of water.

"Ji chachi ji... vo mai aise hi... neend nahi aa rahi thi..." she didn't know what else to say.

"Ohho... aayegi bhi kaise... Shravan puttar abhi tak aaya nahi na... tu fikar na kar puttar... uski aadat hai aise der raat tak kaam karne ki... kabhi kabhi toh vo 1 baje bhi ghar aata tha...tu khaana kha kar so ja..."

"Nahi chachi ji...main aise hi baithi thi... kuch khaas bhookh nahi lagi hain...Shravan aayega toh use serve kar ke usi ke saath kha loongi... aap fikar mat kijiye..."

"Achha puttar... teri marzi..." she had started to speak when the honk from outside caught their attention, "Le...aa gaya tera pati... jaa darwaza khol uske liye...mai chalti hoon..." she said in her over sweet tone before heading towards her room. Sumo rushed towards the door, her heart finally slowing down to its normal pace. She pulled open the door even before the bell was rung, her impatience giving away.

The sight in front was like a vivid dream come true for Shravan. Sumo waiting for him and opening the door for him, to welcome him back into their home...back in her arms... where he used to believe he belonged. He couldn't help but stare at her for a long minute, almost gone in a spell. She had looked extremely impatient the moment she had opened the door but the impatience was immediately replaced by relief when she saw him.
'Was that a streak of happiness that he felt coursing through his body at her impatience???' He thought.
Her pupils dilated seeing her husband for the first time in the last 24 hours. Her body urged her to run into his arms and ask him, wasn't he impatient like her to see her.
Wasn't he feeling homecoming to see her waiting for him impatiently, but she supressed her desires.

"Andar aao na..." she said breaking his stupor. He averted his eyes swiftly, moving in past her.

"Tum ab tak jaag rahi ho..." he asked not knowing what to say.

"Haan... neend nahi aa rahi thi... isliye magazine padh rhi thi tabhi tumhari gaadi ki awaaz aayi... isliye darwaza kholne chali aayi.." she said as she moved in after closing the door, her words so measured as if more than him she was trying to make herself believe herself.

"Ohh..." he uttered with a hint of frustration in his voice. Somewhere in hearts of hearts he had believed she had been up and waiting for him but he reminded his unruly mind that she was nothing but a namesake wife. He moved towards the dining and gulped down a glass of water still with his back towards her and holding his neck, he rushed up into his room immediately. Sumo looked at his back confused. She shrugged and moved into the kitchen to heat the food for him.

~~~~~
"Shravan... tum khaana khaane..." she trailed off as she saw the scene in front of her. Shravan sitting on the bed in his grey vest and tracks, bend over something on the bed, his back towards the door. She moved in and kept the tray of food on the table. Moving to his side she tried to look at what he was doing when a gasp escaped her lips.
"Shravan... tumhare haath ko kya hua... yeh chot kaise... itna khoon kaise beh gaya..." she whimpered seeing his injured hand, blood oozing out of it. Her eyes moistened as she took his hand in hers.
"Kuch nahi hai... chhoti si chot hai...bathroom ka mirror toot gaya mujhse..uthaate waqt zara si lag gayi...waise bhi maine zindagi me isse badi badi chotein khaayi hai... this is absolutely nothing in front of them..." he spoke in a noxious tone. She lifted her eyes and looked into his...his deep orbs... intense and an even more deeper shade than usual.
"Khayal rakhna chahiye na... dekho kitni lag gayi hai...let me bandage it..." she took the box from his lap and started nursing the deep cut in his palm.
"Rehne do na Suman..."
"Please Shravan... let me.." she urged, almost like a whisper, her eyes brimming and he quietened down not being able to deny anymore.
"Thank you... ab tum so jao...mujhe thoda kaam hai..." he said starting to stand up as she finished cleaning his wounds and tying the bandage. The whole time he had been having a hard time not to pull her in his arms and plant his lips on hers... to not drink off those tears from her eyes. Her adorable behaviour with him since the day he saved her from Aditya wasn't helping him either. Behaving aloof and toxic, when she would pass a sweet smile to him was no less than a mammoth task.
"Phir se kaam... kam se kam kuch kha toh lo..."
"Suman mujhe bhook nahi hai...maine sandwich kha liya tha office me...tum kha lo..." he paused and turned towards her, "Tumne kha liya hoga na..." he asked, this time a lil softly.
"Haan... haan... kha liya..." she averted her eyes. He gave her a squint look before shaking his head unbelievably.
"Jhooth bol nahi sakti toh bolne ki koshish kyu karti ho tum...yeh lo kha lo...please.." he said taking hold of the plate from the table and pushing it towards her, his tone again stiff but the 'please' in the end uttered like an urge. He turned to leave the room when he felt a tug at his hand.
"Tum bhi thoda sa kha lo... please Shravan... tumhari sehat kharab ho jayegi...please..." she couldn't help voice her concern this time. Her urge made it even harder for him to deny her. He has been trying to stay away with all his might and she was doing all the things that was making his resolve slowly crumble to pieces. He sighed and finally sat beside her, maintaining a decent distance. He adjusted his body comfortably as he tried to tear the bread and eat with his left hand. The curry fell down from the piece as he tried to eat it. After trying for the fourth time he left the bread on the plate and pulled the plate of rice towards him. He was about to serve himself when she forwarded her hand towards his mouth, a piece of rolled bread in her fingers.
"Aaj mai khila deti hoon..." she just whispered and guessing he was about to protest again, she just uttered a 'please' softly that was enough for him to let down his guards. Looking into her eyes with a soft look, he took the nibble into his mouth. She smiled a bright smile as he took the morsel and a brighter one when he started eating from her hand without any objections.
~~~~~

"Owww..." a small scream left his lips as he turned around to take the glass of water from the table.

"Kya hua..."

"Kuch nahi... bas aise hi..."

"Shravan... tum cheekhe kyu... kya hua..tumhari gardan me dard hai kya... tum upar aate waqt bhi apni gardan pakde hue the..." she asked as she put the dishes away.

"Nahi bas din bhar kaam karne ki wajah se... kuch khaas dard nahi hai..." he tried to move away.

"Nahi mujhe dekhne do... zyada dard lag raha hai...muscle spasm hogaya hoga...din bhar aise kaam karoge toh aur kya hoga... apna zara bhi khayal nahi hai tumhe..." she came behind him to check his nape, babbling, not remembering how she'd been behaving all formal a few minutes ago. Shravan felt a bubbling joy in him, as if he had been waiting for something like this. Sumo coddling over him so rightfully felt so perfect.

"Yaha dard hai kya..." she asked pressing a point just below his hair. A grunt left his mouth as she pressed one of the most sensitive and erogenous zones of his body. His body was already feeling tired and feverish due to all the work load and now her being around him, touching him, her petite body dressed in just a loose tee and pajama, so close to him and the sweet fragrance coming off her wasn't helping him.

"Sumo rehne do na... tum doctor ho kya...why are you babying me...yeh typical wives ki tarah behave karna band karo please..." he let out his frustration as she again pressed a similar point. Sumo stiffened for a second as he uttered those words.

"What the hell is wrong with you Shravan... maana ki tum mujhse nafrat karte ho...mera tumhare aaspaas hona bhi tumhe gawaara nahi par phir bhi tum meri fikar karte ho na...mujhe protect karte ho...phir tumhe itni takleef me dekh kar how do you expect me to keep away... bolo Shravan... typical wife... haan main behave kar rahi hoon typical wives ki tarah because I am your wife dammit...tum maano ya nahi..." she said in a go as Shravan looked at her, his jaw dropped.

"Chup chap vest utaaro aur yaha let jao... mai 5 minute me kitchen se aati hoon... aur agar ab behas ki na toh dekh lena..." she warned before rushing out of the room while Shravan kept on looking at the door wondering when exactly the tables were turned on him. She returned in a few minutes with a small bowl in her hands while he was sitting still, in exactly the same position she left him.

"Are abhi tak aise kya baithe ho... vest utaaro aur leto..." she ordered.

"Sumo.."

"Shravan... tumhari gardan ka dard badh jayega... please meri baat mano aur let jao... mar nahi jaoge agar ek baar apna ego side me rakh loge..." she seethed. He had no option but to obey her. He pulled the vest off his body while Sumo looked aside, not meeting his eyes. There had been a few more instances in the last 7 days when he had appeared shirtless in front of her and only her heart knew how hard it was to control her wanton senses and not unabashedly devour his sexy body with her eyes. Shravan again shrieked with pain as he put his arms down after pulling the cloth off his body. He laid down on his stomach and Sumo took the place beside him. Dipping her fingers in the warm mustard oil she gently applied it on his nape, her fingers gliding smoothly on his skin. Rubbing the oil and pressing the pressure points on his back and neck, she pressed her palm on the base of his nape. Her fingers itched to go into the thick forest of his undone, soft, black, hair as they touched his mane. The sensations that flowed through the underneath of her skin at the contact of his bare skin with her nimble fingers, she felt all the dormant desires in her body awakening and coursing through her veins. She had a habit of doing this for mami and very well knew how to massage to relieve of such spasms. Shravan supressed his urge to moan, not only because of the excruciating pain but the primal desires that she was arousing in his body with her fluid smooth yet seductive hand movements on his bare body. Her hands from his neck moved towards the broad shoulder blades and he couldn't help but let out a small whimpering moan. His muscles rippled under her touch and she doubted whether it was the effect of the ache or the contact of her hand with his bare skin.

"Shravan relax... loosen up your body... trust me isse tumhara poora dard chala jayega and then you can work as much as you want..." she said as she rubbed his back with a lil more pressure wanting to extract all the pain out of his body. He obeyed a few seconds later by loosening up his stiff body as he threw his inhibitions away and closed his eyes blissfully at the pleasurable sensations only her touch could invoke in him. Sumo gently massaged his back for some more time, her fingers working on his body like an expert masseuse. The even breathing after a few minutes caught her attention and she slowed her movements down. She peeked at his face to realise that he has dozed off. A beautiful smile split across her face as she saw a faint smile on his face. She couldn't help but rejoice at the realisation that she was the reason behind that smile. She wiped her hands with a napkin and put the bowl away before covering him with the duvet. She adjusted the temperature of the AC and went on her hunches right in front of his face. He looked so peaceful while sleeping, as if all his worries have vanished into the thin air. His forehead devoid of frowns but his brows still in a deep shape of V, his lips stretched in a very little smile, his jaw rigid like always yet relaxed. She gave in to the extreme temptation and ran her hand on his face, like a feather. She moved her palm on his head, smoothening his brows at the same time pushing the offensive hair away from his beautiful shut orbs. He face relaxed under her touch and he smiled a little more, snuggling into the duvet making her go 'awww' at his antics.

"Sote hue kitne achhe lagte ho...hamesha aise nahi reh sakte...uthte hi apni ego ko bhi uthaana zaroori hota hai kya...tumhare chehre par aisa sukoon dekhe hue kitna waqt beet gaya...but I promise you Shravan... ek din aayega jis din tumhari zindagi me sukoon ka doosra matlab Sumo hogi... aur mai vo din jaldi hi lekar aaungi... ek din mai tumhare pyaar ko tumhari zubaan par laakar rahungi... aur vo bhi apne pyaar se... Shravan Malhotra ki biwi hoon... jo sochti hoon vo karke hi rehti hoon..." she whispered in an almost inaudible tone, a bright smile gracing her face all the while. She bent down and placed a soft, loving peck on his forehead almost involuntarily, but careful enough to not disturb his sleep. Putting the lights off she passed on a loving glance to his peacefully sleeping form before moving onto the couch. Her heart doing a small jig at the realisation that finally she managed to move a step ahead in her marriage, even if it was a very tiny one.

"Aaj bohot dino baad tumhe sukoon me dekhkar mai bhi sukoon ki neend so paungi Shravan..." she thought before closing her eyes to welcome the dreams of a beautiful future with her husband... her Shravan.
