It is not for just this show it is for every show where they show such mad or even abusive love by a good looking male protagonist, fans (especially adolescent female fans) still want them together.
The reason are many. And they are not simple ones why such characters are celebrated. I was in school when "Darr" was released first time and sadly a lot of girls from my school used to think Sunny as villain for saving the girl who is his wife (and who chose him).
Love, especially romantic love is glorified in all kinds of pop culture all over the world. And social conditioning makes most men and women believe that it is men's love which matters.
And most people who glorify abusive or forces love are the ones who have NOT faced what it is to be in a forced or abusive relationship. I have worked for years in this field and have seen what it does to women of all ages and so do not see the good looking and rich (okay, I find it weird to see this fascination with rich guys among so many fans) guys but guys who badly need counselling.
I know, this turned out to be much more serious post that I intended.
As far as this show is concerned, one who cries louder is considered to be wronged and not the one who manages to held their head high and go through life.
If an ugly guy is shown to love as much (and as abusively) as Dev's or Shravan's or Arnav's of these shows, not a single person will support them.
To be honest, so far Dev is not going totally out of the character. Remember his declaration to Sonakshi how she is the first thing he has desired for himself in years? He always shown traits of being an obsessive lover. If you notice the way he loves his mother, it is apparent.
And as far as Dev having some behavioural issues, subtle hints are shown from the day one. The manifestation of it is more evident now. It is easy to not notice these things when things are going good. It is glaringly obvious when things go downhill.
And one night stand is not for someone like Dev. He is not attracted to her physically. She is his emotional need.
