Chapter 7
He left her messages. By the end of the day she had a number of miscalls from him and two voice mails.
As Khushi browsed her phone on the park bench that evening as she had come out to get some air she finally listened to those messages
One was from last..
"Hi Khushi I didn't realize you already left, thank you for this evening nani can't stop smiling now. Maybe I'll catch up tomorrow."
The next was from an hour or so ago..
"Hi Khushi its just me Hp ne kaha ke tumare tabyet kuch theekh nahin hai, hope you are alright if there is anything I can do to help just give a call.."
The guilt of even a white lie was something powerful especially for someone like Khushi who rarely lied. She wasn't ill she just needed not to be around him or anything to do with him because she was in this silly state of mind where she could think of nothing but him and being around him or anything to do with him was unhealthy.
Khushi put her phone back into her pocket taking in the breeze provided by the late evening time in this rather nice park she watches people pass by. An elderly couple, a mother and child, followed by a slightly younger looking couple before she could picture herself and Arnav Khushi decided that she would take a walk.
It helped Khushi feel relaxed spending time on her own but some time into her walk and Khushi happened to hear the most familiar voice there could be to her ears.
Arnav's.
"Khushi!"
He had called from a far and when Khushi turned she saw him jogging towards her. Of course Arnav often go for a run after his office day. A little hesitant to see him after all she had lied she smiled to be polite as he approached .
"How are you feeling?"
..good she said - looking a little unsure but then she couldn't lie.
I'm not ill she said.. whilst they walked ahead so they could talk.
"Hame bas kuch vakt chahiyey tha shantivaan se dur ..
"I see, well if you've changed your mind then I understand.."
Nahin ..
She interrupted she carried for nani and she wanted to help her recover and she also needed the money to support her household.
"Ham bina chahe aap ke bare mein sochne lage hai Arnavji.."
"and that's what putting you off"
She nodded a yes, it wasn't his fault she knew that he had been professional and proper every step of the way it was her heart that had tripped and she hated to admit that to him even now. Her pride dancing around in her eyes as she spoke but also tried not to look at him too much.
He evaluated before speaking that was his strength. "I can't influence your choices Khushi but if you wish to keep the job then I will do my best to keep my distance from you. You should make the choice that is right for you, I'm sure nani would understand."
Hame ek aur din chahiyey, to decide.
He acknowledged that telling her to take all the time she needed he could manage in the mean time.
Having said his piece he took his leave and got back to his running with a pleasant goodbye.
Watching the back of him as he resumed his run Khushi hated her state of heart. Why did it have to be so inclined towards him.
...
At times it didn't take much for things to take a turn for the worse at the drop of a hat. A day or so later and ASR picked up news of his grandmother having fallen into a state of deeper illness.
It wasn't for any particular reason it was just the condition she suffered from and her age. There wasn't much that could be done yet he sat outside the hospital room in the middle of the night waiting for the doctor wondering where he had gone wrong.
Was it because he had taken the afternoon and gone into work instead of staying with her was it his fault.
A man as strong willed as Arnav Singh Raizada never doubted himself but having seen his grandmother lying there so ill it shook even his strengh.
There was no lonely feeling like the one he felt in this moment, in wait of the doctor all alone in a rather cold feeling hospital corridor.
What more could he do? He had hired the best doctors, it was the best hospital in the city and he had all the money in the world to spend on her yet he felt so helpless.
He looked at the screen of his mobile phone that read the time 1:30am.
"You must have somebody you can call." Said a slightly elderly tone of voice from beside him. It was an elderly lady he didn't know if she was sat there all along or she had just arrived but there was something about the old lady that didn't bother him rather comforted him.
She looked over his shoulder a little at his mobile phone.
"Khushi.. ? Is she your wife.."
It was a rather personal question but Arnav didn't mind maybe because of the lady's age, there was something about her eyes that reminded Arnav of his grandmother.
"She used to be.." he replied.
"Call her" said the lady again the look on her face as if it was his grandmother he was speaking to.
"I don't think I should bother her at this time of the night. It was late and it was complicated." There was silence for a second but the old lady noticed how arnav still looked at the same contact on his mobile phone, the same number - Khushi's.
"You must love her very much.."
He turned towards the old lady with a certain warmth in his eyes "My grandmother.. yes I do" The lady wasn't talking about Nani she was referring to Khushi.
"No khushi.." Arnav took a look up at the old lady for a moment.
"She's the first person you thought of turning to she must mean a lot to you .."
He had never thought of it that way and it left him with a lot to think about before he could think upon the connotations of what the lady had said the doctor walked out of the operation theatre.
Shes going to be fine Mr Raizada said the doctor patting Arnav on the shoulder. Taking a sigh of relief Arnav turns to the old lady on the seats outside the room who shares a smile for the moment as does he.
Aman arrived shortly after and insisted that Arnav take a break, go home get some rest, freshen up and return.
ASR does exactly that, the drive home is a real eye opener for Arnav of how very nearly he had lost his grandmother. Life was short and loved ones dear.
...
Nani wasn't the only person Arnav thought about he thought about the old lady sat beside him outside the room. He had never asked her whom she was there for, but all of her words stayed with him loud and clear.
As he dropped his keys into the bowl in the lounge as he entered his house turning to the staircase he didn't know why but he felt like he heard a familiar clanging of dishes and cutlery in the kitchen. Surely there was no one there but he walked towards the kitchen anyway switched on the light and saw an image that was a regular occurrence once upon a time.
"Aagayey aap.. "(You're back,) she said as she tried to move a stray piece of hair out of the way and back into her hair without getting jalebi mix all over her, but she managed.
"Hamne aap ki coffee aur akbar waha rakhi hai" (I've left you newspaper and coffee on the side there.) she indicated with her eyes seen as her hands were busy mixing her favourite batter. Before he could head for his long awaited drink of coffee as ever with Khushi there was always a catch. Magar use phele Aap hamari madat karenge ? (oh but will you help me a second before you do that ..)of course he would he didn't have choice J
He saw her looking towards her sleeves that were getting in the way of her jalebi mix, she needed someone to help her roll them up.
It was just his imagination the kitchen was dormant. He switched the light off and made his way up the staircase.
A fresh set of clothes is what Arnav looked for when he entered his bedroom heading straight to his wardrobe he picked out the first pair of trousers and threw them upon the bed but browsed through his shirts because that was one thing he was particular about.
"Hamne aap ki white shirt phele se nikaal rakhi hai." ( I've already ironed your white shirt for you)
Said her voice in the distance, when Arnav turned around he saw Khushi sat on the bed sorting through a heap of laundry of course she wasn't there. Again it was his imagination. He turned back to his wardrobe and found the shirt he was looking for.
..
He took a shower and whilst under the stream of running water he thought about what he had experienced today. Stood in front of the bathroom mirror a little later in the middle of a shave, tried eyes and tired soul Arnav tries to do his best not too wound himself whilst he shaves however a reflection in the mirror catches his attention.
The silhouette of Khushi's figure showering behind him in the shower cubicle visible to him in the mirror reflection. All accompanied by the sound of running water that soon comes to a stop like the lever had been pulled to a close. The sound of the shower door opening and then Khushi stepping out in her towel. Her wet hair infused In water and what was visible of her body adorned in droplets of water.
"Ji,.. good morning .." she said, her eyes a little downcast per her reservations to be seen that way"after which she walked past him out of the bathroom.
And again it was simply a recollection of the past but one that now truly made him wonder whether the old lady had some truth in her words?
That questioned remained on his mind every inch of the way from when he left the house again to the time he re-entered the hospital maybe he was just tired maybe it was the stress playing with his mind but when he approached the corridor to the room where his grandmother was being kept and saw Khushi sat next to Aman in a distance his questions were silenced by the feeling he got upon seeing her.
Out of nowhere a sense of fulfillment filled him upon seeing Khushi and in that moment he realized how important she was to him .
...
