She didn't clap, cheer or hoot. She just sat there in silence, at complete peace with herself. Sometimes, when we are too overwhelmed with emotions, when we need to shout out to express the maddening joy, we lose our voice. Perhaps that's why at times silence becomes louder than words...

"Does you game allow me to give you bonus marks for tasks that are not listed?"
"No, and you know I didn't do it to win. Its just that when you sing, I get carried away...getting back to the game, we are 1:1 now."
"Now, its your turn Nandini"
"Ok, so I want to attempt the 2nd wish next, that is to dance with you in rain, but it isn't raining yet, so you have to go ahead with yours."
What was her second wish? Create one memory which will never grow old. What did it mean? Memories always grew old because they essentially capture a moment in time. Then how would he create one that defies time?
Nandini was eager to know what Manik would do to fulfil her second wish. She had blurted it out in excitement, without having paid much thought to it. But now that she was re considering it, she was sure it wasn't a feasible wish. "Manik, I think I had been a little unfair and I should just swipe my second wish" If you could trust Nandini to always come up with wacky ideas, you could also bet on her honesty. She always gave a fair chance, even to her enemies (the only exception ever was Neel. With him, Nandini wished she could just turn into an evil witch with a electric wand)
"I play to win , Nandini Murthy. I guess I have already told you once."
He dragged her to the kitchen and started ransacking her fridge while she stood confused, trying to understand what he was up to.
"This is the second best answer to your wish" Answer to her wish in the fridge? Had he lost it? And that too he was saying second best? Then why wasn't he attempting THE BEST option?
Manik pulled out a mango from the farthest corner of the fridge and gave her a wait-and-watch smirk. He then grabbed a laddle and made his way out to the front porch of the house.
He kneeled down on his knees to dig out some soil. "Nandini come here and hold my hand."
As they both sat down to sow the ripe mango, he explained "You asked me to create a memory that will never grow old. Well as we sow this seed today, it will germinate one day and then it will grow into a plant and eventually into a tree. You may shift out of this house, you may move ahead in life, but this memory will never grow old, because every time you come here, you will only see it grow bigger and bigger."
Nandini was stumped. This was totally unexpected and delightfully so. Why didn't it strike her? But she was glad to trail 1:2. Manik deserved it all the way.
Nandini looked up at the overcast sky, which, much to her misery was slowly clearing out. Traces of a wayward wind was pushing the clouds away. It was one of those days when you could just walk outside or lay on the grass, or just lean against each other and watch the sun play hide and seek. Only it was a disaster for her second task. Time was slipping away, minute by minute, hour by hour. She didn't want to let him go, and this was new. Earlier it had always been him, who craved to hold her back, who found excuses to stay close to her but the separation had made her so paranoid that she panicked at the mere thought of staying away from him. How long will they live apart in two cities? Would she eventually shift to pune or would he return to Mumbai. Everytime she thought about the future, it scared her. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath...'Live in the present Nandini' She kept on chanting in her head.
"It won't rain today, Manik... and I will lose." She remarked sadly as she confirmed her apprehensions with the weather app on her phone.
He felt stupid. Why did he have to add the 'Rain' part to the clause. He could have just wished for them to dance together. Now what, he wondered. But the one thing he knew he couldn't do was to let her lose, no matter how errant, nature chose to behave.
Destination kitchen, once again. It was just in the morning that he had literally ordered her to not cross the kitchen door and within three hours, he had to bring her inside twice. He drained out all the coke from the two remaining one liter bottles and carefully dug tiny holes in them using one of her sharp pins. All this while, she was standing with her heart in her mouth.
"Manik choro na, chot lag jayegi, Its ok, its just a game!" What Manik was doing was really tricky. His hand could slip any moment and if it did, it would straightaway pierce him. She kept on insisting and he continued ignoring like a man on a mission. How unfair, she thought. If she slashed her hand, she was prohibited from entering the kitchen but when it came to him, he could willingly take risks without paying any heed to her pleas or screams and that too for a petty game.
Thankfully, Aiyappa saw to it that he escaped without hurting himself. He asked her for some pvc tapes and went out to the front lawn again.
"How do you water the lawn Nandini?"
"Tum kar kya rahe ho manik, mujhe kuch samajh mein nahi aa raha hai."
"Will you just keep quiet and answer my question?"
"Should I keep quiet or should I answer? "
"Nandini!!!"
"Ok, ok, there's a tap over there in the garden, so sometimes I fill a bucket and sometimes I use a long pipe, connect it to the kitchen tap and use it to water the plants."
"I will need both. Bring the pipe."
Manik fixed one bottle to the tap which was at the ground level and sealed the mouth of the bottle with the PVC tape. When Nandini brought the pipe, He hung it down from the branch of the tree which was right next to her window on the front lawn and fixed the other holed bottle to the mouth of the pipe in exactly the same way he had done with the tap.
"Ok now go and stand there." He told her, pointing to a spot below the tree. Nandini complied, still trying to understand what the hell was he trying to achieve." And ya close your eyes, don't open, till I ask you to."
Manik went inside and opened the kitchen tap. Water started flowing through the long pipe till it finally accumulated in the bottle handing from the branch of the tree ,Nandini was standing under. He then opened the tap in the garden which started filling in the bottle fixed to its mouth. As he had sealed the mouth of both the bottles, the only way water could come out was like jet streams from the tiny holes drilled in them. Together they started functioning as coordinated sprinkles, one from top and one from the bottom.
Nandini was getting impatient, standing with her eyes closed when she felt the first drops on water on her. Had it indeed started raining? Had God finally listened to her and changed the weather forecast?
Manik walked up to her and pulled her by her waist. "Now you may open your eyes miss."
Her instinctive reaction was to look up at the sky. But, lo! There was no hint of a cloud. The wind had shooed them all away. Then she looked around and realized that it wasn't God who had granted her wish, it was Manik who had done it all, so that she didn't lose.
"Who are you playing for? You do realize, that by doing this, you are actually making sure that I win and you lose?"
He smiled. "I guess I playing for both of us. Isn't it the way I am supposed to? Can we have a dance now, The DANCE IN THE RAIN? Wait , do u want some music too? I can play that as well." His face was brimming with pride.
Yes, he could do anything, anytime for her and he had proved it one more time. Good that they were dancing in the rain, for she didn't want to show him the tears in her eyes. One way or the other, he always gave her tears, happy ones when he was around and sad ones when he wasn't. But what really moved her, was that despite doing all this, his focus still hadn't shifted from her wounded finger. Even when they were dancing, he had neatly entwined his fingers around hers so that it didn't get wet. And he did this silently, as if by doing so it would escape her notice.
She stayed glued to him, as they moved around in mellow steps. The wind played with her hair and her guitar studs sparkled under the sun. She looked into his warm brown eyes, water dripping off his hair. She tip toed on her feet to give him a surprise peck on his cheek. "Woh waise, you said that planting the seed was the second best option, why didn't you go for the 1st one?" This was bothering her for a while.
He broke in to a mischievous laugh, piting Nandini's innocence "We will get to it in due time, but as of now it's a risky prospect."
"Kya matlab??" Few hours ago she had certified him as an idiot and here she was scratching her head while he was still laughing.
"Do you wanna make babies right away? Well If you do, I am more than willing to help you out."
"Manik!!!!!!" she punched him hard in his abdomen, trying to camouflage her embarrassment with mock anger.
