Chapter 48
Khushi was trembling seeing the huge disgusting figure in front of her. That man was slowly coming closer and closer towards her. And to add to her bad luck, it began drizzling. If Khushi ran away, he would easily get to her. Now the only option was to get to the car.
"You need to get into the car and lock the door from inside. C'mon Khushi! You can do it! Run!!" Khushi told herself and ran towards the car as fast as she could. The man followed her. She reached the car. The man was fast approaching. Khushi held the key in her trembling hands and was about to put it into the key hole but the key slipped from her hand and fell down.
As Khushi bent down to pick up the key, the man pulled her towards him tightly holding her arms. His hold was too tight and hurting her. "Aah!!" she cried. Tears were rolling down her eyes. "Arnaav!!!" she called out, but he was not there to hear her cry. She was crying, constantly trying to free herself from the man's grip. "Leave me!!" she cried struggling as the man was looking greedily at her. The man pulled her towards his body and was about to kiss her when she bit his hand hard and relieved herself from his grip.
Before the man could recover from the pain, Khushi pushed him with all her might. He fell to the ground. Before he got up, Khushi quickly picked up the keys and unlocked the door. She got into the car and tried to close the door but the man pulled the door from outside.
With much effort, finally Khushi managed to close the door but before she could lock it, the man opened it and pulled Khushi out with force. Khushi fell down on the wet road. She was half-wet in the drizzling rain. Her dress soiled due to the mud. She turned to see the man hovering over her.
Khushi pushed herself backward creeping over the road. She couldn't believe this was happening to her. She cried out for Arnav again, "Arnaaav!!" she cried at the top of her voice. He was long gone.
"No!! You can't do this!!" she cried as the man crept closer. Khushi was clenching her dupatta in scare. He got hold of it and pulled it but Khushi didn't let it go. The man then snatched the dupatta with force as his nails scratched her shoulder and neck and one of her sleeves and the dress over her shoulder tore off. "No!!! Please!!" Khushi was crying as the man laughed at her helplessness. He tied the dupatta around his waist and kissed in air teasing Khushi. "Please!!! Pleeaasee let me go!! For God sake!!... Please!! Don't..." cried Khushi crawling backwards.
The man was craving for her body and he leaped onto her. Khushi tried to push him away but in vain. He pinned both her hands on the the road. "No... This can't happen!!" Khushi's body became numb. The tears in her eyes made everything hazy. "Arnaaav!!" she squealed wishing he had never left. "Arnav!! Please come back!! Please!!!" she cried again.
And then Khushi felt the whole weight of the man on her body as the man fell over her. She couldn't breathe... she couldn't shout any more!! The man's grip on her wrists had loosened. And then to her most pleasant surprise, she saw Arnav looking over her. Now she understood that the man fell on her body because Arnav had hit him on his head.
Arnav was saying something but Khushi was not in a condition to understand. Arnav held the man by his collar and gave him a tight slap. The man ran away. Arnav followed him to some distance but returned to Khushi as she needed him at the moment. She was in a miserable condition.
By the time Arnav came back, Khushi had stood up. She was in shock. The moment she saw Arnav, she ran to him and just hugged him as tightly as she could. She was crying, her body shivering. Arnav initially hesitated to hold her, but then he hugged her back. He held her tight. The warmth of his embrace was soothing. Khushi would stay there for her whole life. She was breathless as she cried continuously. She sobbed badly. Arnav tried to comfort her by gently rubbing her back. He didn't say anything. They both just stood there silently, in the midst of the darkness, embracing each other. There was no chance of the moon shedding its light on them as the sky was covered by clouds.
Arnav waited for Khushi to calm down a bit. He then gently pushed her away, but she had clutched his shirt tightly with both her hands and was not ready to leave him. Arnav understood what she was going through. This was the most horrible incident that can happen with any girl. Arnav looked at Khushi. She was still in shock, and he knew it would take some time for her to recover from it.
"Why did you leave me alone?!!" she said suddenly, "I was telling you that I was scared..." she was crying again, "why..." she sobbed, "why didn't you take me with you?! What if anything had happened to me?! I was..." and she hugged him again, crying.
Arnav caressed her. He felt guilty for what had happened.
"I am sorry Khushi, I am very sorry! I had never ever thought something like this would happen..." he said, "But now I am here! You don't need to worry... Okay!"
Khushi nodded while crying. She didn't want to leave Arnav at any cost now. She felt safe with him, safer than ever!
"Khushi" said Arnav, "come, drink some water..."
Arnav and Khushi walked to the car. Arnav took out the bottle of water. Khushi gulped down some water. Her throat was dry and paining. Her eyes were red and swollen. They were burning. She was weak, exhausted. The tears couldn't stop flowing down.
Arnav saw that Khushi wasn't wearing her dupatta and her dress was torn. He quickly took off his coat and put it on her shoulders. While doing that, he noticed the scratches and bruises on Khushi's neck. He closed his eyes and sighed sadly. Khushi was silent, but she had not overcome the dreadful moments. She was in trauma.
"Khushi, sit in the car..." said Arnav as he opened the door for her.
She got in and as Arnav was about to close the door, Khushi said in scare, "Don't go anywhere please!!" She was breathing heavily at the thought of Arnav going away leaving her again.
Arnav held her trembling hands and assured her that he was not going anywhere. Arnav tried to call Aman for help, but Aman's phone was still switched off. Arnav checked the time. It was 9:45. But it seemed the meeting was still not over.
Arnav had not gone further in search of the mechanic that time when he sensed something was wrong with Khushi and he had come back immediately. So he never reached the shop on the way. Now they had to wait for Aman's meeting to get over so that they could ask for help.
Arnav tried to stop a couple of two-wheelers passing by but in vain. Then he saw a van coming and signalled asking for lift. The driver stopped the van. Arnav quickly took out their baggage from the car and loaded it onto the carrier over the van. Khushi had constantly clutched his shirt in her hand and was always with him.
The van had travelers already. There was space enough for a single person at the back and some space in front beside the driver. Arnav told Khushi to sit at the back. Khushi looked into the van. All men sitting inside. Khushi didn't wish to sit alone among all those men. But she didn't know how to tell this to Arnav. Khushi just stood on the road clutching Arnav's shirt. Arnav moved to the front to sit beside the driver and his shirt escaped Khushi's grip. Khushi missed a beat. She felt as if she was left all alone again. Arnav looked at her wondering why she wasn't getting in, and then the realization dawned on him. He came and stood beside her. She felt better as she clutched his shirt again. Arnav looked at her fingers holding his shirt tightly and smiled faintly. He requested that someone sitting behind could go and occupy the place beside the driver. One of the men agreed. Finally Arnav and Khushi got into the van and sat beside each other.
There were two long seats opposite to each other. Arnav noticed that Khushi without her dupatta, her scratches and her torn dress revealing her shoulder was proving to be a treat for their co-passengers to watch. He tried to pull away his coat from Khushi that covered her back. Khushi was shocked at Arnav's act. What was he doing? She tried to pull back the coat but Arnav was stronger. He now covered the coat over Khushi on the front like a blanket. Khushi's eyes watered. He cared so much for her. But she was still not comfortable as the men around were still gazing at her continuously. She moved more and more to Arnav's side. Arnav could feel her discomfort. The others constantly gazing at Khushi irked him. He put his hand around Khushi's shoulder and pulled her closer to announce to the men that Khushi was his property and they had no right to stare at her. The men instantly looked away from her. Khushi rested her head on his shoulder clutching his sleeve tightly. She felt safe now. She couldn't forget what a horrible night this was for her and she shivered occasionally on recalling all that had happened. Arnav could feel her body shiver... he just held her close. One by one, the passengers got down at their respective stops. Finally, all the passengers got down and the driver told Arnav that this was the last stop on his way. Arnav told the driver that their hotel was still further and requested him to drop them there. After a lot of pleading and promising to offer good money, the driver agreed.
Now only Arnav and Khushi were there in the van along with the driver. Arnav suddenly realised that he was still holding Khushi. He pulled back his hand at once. Khushi too sat straight drawing back her head from his shoulder. But she still clutched the sleeve of his shirt. The driver put on the radio and a song started playing, a song that suited Arnav and Khushi perfectly...
Kehne ko jashn-e-bahaara hai, ishq yeh dekhke hairaan hai
(there is blossom in the environment just to say, but love is wondering after seeing this)
Phool se khushbu khafa khafa hai gulshan mein
(that the fragrance is displeased with flowers in the garden)
Chhupa hai koi ranj fiza ki chilman mein
(there is some grief hidden in the environment)
Saare sehme nazaare hain, soye soye waqt ke dhaare hain
(all the sights are in fear, and the time is like slept)
Aur dil mein koi khoyi si batein hain
(and there are some lost things in the heart)
Kaise kahein kya hai sitam, sochte hain ab yeh hum
(how to say what kind of injustice is this, i am thinking about this now)
Koi kaise kahe woh hain ya nahi humaare
(how can anybody tell whether he/she is mine)
Karte toh hain saath safar, faasle hain phir bhi magar
(we are travelling together, but still there is distance between us)
Jaise milte nahi kisi dariya ke do kinaare
(like the two sides of river never meet)
Paas hain phir bhi paas nahi, humko yeh gum raas nahi
(we are together but not actually together, this grief is not acceptable by me)
Sheeshe ki ik diwaar hai jaise darmiyaan
(there is like a wall of glass between us)
Hum ne ne jo tha nagma suna, dil ne tha usako chuna
(the song which i had heard, was selected by my heart)
Yeh daastaan humein waqt ne kaisi sunaai
(but what story the time has told to me)
Hum jo agar hai gumgin, woh bhi udhar khush toh nahi
(if i am in grief here, he/she is also not happy there)
Mulaakaaton mein jaise ghul si gayi tanhaayi
(like there is loneliness in our conversations)
Mil ke bhi hum milate nahi, khilake bhi gul khilate nahi
(we meet yet we don't, the roses bloom yet don't)
Aankhon mein hai bahaarein, dil mein khija
(my eyes see the beautiful vista, but the heart is broken)
Arnav and Khushi both felt as if the song was written for them. They stole glances occasionally, they could feel every line, every word of the song... They understood each other very well and they knew it. They only wished that destiny never drifted them apart...
