The seven deadly sins, also known as the capital vices or cardinal sins, are a classification of vices that were originally used in early Christian teachings to educate and instruct followers concerning fallen man's tendency to sin. These sins, when committed, destroyed the life of grace, and created the threat of eternal damnation unless either absolved through the sacrament of confession, or otherwise forgiven through perfect contrition on the part of the penitent.
Hang on…before you guys hit yourself on the head and say oh my god…another of those posts from this crazy woman…let me set your fears to rest. We are (rubbing hands in glee) going to (with a devilish grin on my face) list (laughing maniacally) each of these seven sins as they appear on DMG!!!!! Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee as excited as I am? I sure hope so….
Lust is usually thought of as involving obsessive or excessive thoughts or desires of a sexual nature. Lust and love are two different things; while a genuine, selfless love can represent the highest degree of development and feeling of community with others in a human relationship, Lust can be described as the excessive desire for sexual release. The other person can be therefore seen as a "means to an end" for the fulfillment of the subject's desires, and becomes thus objectified in the process. Vivek and his uninvited advances towards Ridhima is a classic example of the Lust thus described…Atul's reactions to the stocking clad arthritis patient, our dear Simran's moves on Armaan. I am sure we can list several others if we just put our brilliant heads together!!
Gluttony is the over-indulgence and over-consumption of anything to the point of waste. Remember Armaan treating the anorexia patient? If that wasn't an instance of gluttony, what could be? And at the risk of sounding insensitive myself, (blame the creatives for it), Lovely's admission that she would gorge on a dozen parathas to mourn Armaan's resignation is another sad instance…any more guys???
Greed is, like Lust and Gluttony, a sin of excess. However, Greed is applied to the acquisition of wealth in particular. Hmmmm….I actually cannot come up with anything to illustrate greed. Had this been a kekta creation, we would have seen several instances running into astronomical figures unimaginable even to those on the Forbes list of the richest people in the world!!! Let's see if you can remember any particular character or scene that would elucidate greed!!
Sloth has changed considerably since its original inclusion among the seven deadly sins. In fact it was first called the sin of sadness, characterized by what modern writers would now describe as melancholy: apathy, depression, and joylessness — the last being viewed as being a refusal to enjoy the goodness of God and the world He created. The modern view of the vice, as highlighted by its contrary virtue zeal/diligence, is that it represents the failure to utilize one's talents and gifts. Portraying Sloth as being more simply a sin of laziness has rendered it considerably less serious than the other sins. Atul constantly complaining that he lacks sleep??? Note that he is always the first to start the discussion on how overworked they are. Sapna's reluctance to party as she would give up her time to rest? Neither are perfect instances of sloth, but I am sure the rest of you will help me there!!!
Wrath may be described as inordinate and uncontrolled feelings of hatred and anger. These feelings can manifest as vehement denial of the truth, both to others and in the form of self-denial. Wrath is the only sin not necessarily associated with selfishness or self interest. Ahem….RIDHIMA RIDHIMA RIDHIMA!!!!! Actually she inspired me to write this post. She epitomizes the sin and its definition perfectly!!!! There are others, you think you can spot them?
Envy is characterized by an insatiable desire. Those who commit the sin of Envy desire something that someone else has which they perceive themselves as lacking. Anjali envies Ridhima for the love that their father showers on her, Armaan envies anybody who shares a friendly and amiable relationship with Ridhima (poor guy, do you blame him really? She's nice to everybody else, but him!!). And now Ridhima envies Simran for replacing her, albeit temporarily, as the damsel in distress in Armaan's arms!!!
Pride is considered the original and most serious of the seven deadly sins, and indeed the ultimate source from which the others arise. It is identified as a desire to be more important or attractive than others, failing to give compliments to others though they may be deserving of them, and excessive love of self. Hmmmm…Anjali, a classic case in example? A defence mechanism sure, but proud all the same!!!
Not meant to blasphemous in any way, but I just thought it interesting that every theory and philosophy in literature finds some relevance even while discussing a daily soap like our very own DMG. What beats me is why then, we still choose to talk about the redundant…
