In the tumultuous world of Indian music, has anything changed in the last twenty years? Based on our perception of music and the target audience, the answer can be both yes and/or no. If you look back to stage performances of by-gone era, you will find even then the audience reveled in melodies from Bollywood movies. They do so even now.

So when it comes to stage performance part has the preference for music changed?

No it has not. It's just the crowd has got divided into three distinct groups. The first is the "Old is Gold" Warriors. Music for them revolves around Old Bollywood compositions only. Second is the "New Age Explorers". Third is the "Black is beautiful" who are mostly in their teens and love to keep them to the new Rap/Pop culture that has invaded the Bollywood Music industry now.

The first group is simple and you will find them attending concerts where they know Oldies get played. The third group usually sticks to their taste but many a time get shifted to the second group later on. It is the third group that's most interesting. They are adventurers; musical experiments will never be a deterrent for them. They feel Nirvana lies in musical experiments: in the fusion of styles, techniques and ethnic hues of music and melody.

At the end of the day, it all depends on the musicians, DJs and other promoters of new music. They are responsible for heralding a combination of education and new styles to establish a social conglomerate that takes audiences to the next level, to some place that can stretch the imagination a little beyond what is commonly perceived as the end.

Some very interesting question comes to mind – which category of music lover do you think you belong to ? Is it ever possible to make the group 3 interested in group 1's preference and vice versa? Can the show producers in combination with the musicians really come up with that 'special' creative package which will take your experience further from the limit from beyond?

Thanks interesting article. Guess we all have our own preferences and over a period tastes do change but certain classic songs will always be immortalised so long as it has certain lastinq qualities like eg. The nature of the song , the complexity and beauty, the wordings, the rhythm and tunes etc. Songs attached to certain movies also gives it impact and popularity. But generally I think the sentimental and classical pieces normally stands the test of time. Compositions by Mozart, Beethoven etc are still popular even now, and I find Jazz still very listenable ( in fact I am crazy about them) Good songs and compositions crosses all language and time barrier and also a lot of thought and emotions are packed in it which slowly surfaces to the avid music lover.

Very well written article. And I agree with what Summer is saying. But with the points you have put I would like to also add that, at times even the mood makes us select our favourites. The songs selection based on mood could again make us select on the basis of lyrics or melody.

I like oldies but with that I also love listening to songs like Masti ki Pathshala. But as Summer said there will always be songs from every era which will get immortalised. They would remain etched in our minds always. Rest all will changed or get replaced with time.
