Chapter 37
"Zoya?" Asad's voice cracked, his shaky hand went over her pale face and brushed her hair away. The commotion in the background faded as he stared at her, regretting raising his voice against her. He remembered the way she flinched back hearing his tone. Damn you Asad, he cursed himself. "WHERE THE HELL IS THE GODDAMN DOCTOR?!" Asad bellowed at everyone behind him, his eyes red.
"He is on his way!" Halim assured him before stepping forward towards Zoya, Asad's hard glare stopped him in his tracks. Halim watched as he slowly lifted her up in his arms, cradling her against him as he walked into their bedroom. "You need to leave." Halim warned Zaheer, "And you too!" He pointedly glared at Asim.
"The heck I'm leaving her like this!" Asim rebelled. Halim squared his shoulders, his eyes narrowed in on Asim, a low growl left his mouth.
"Just go beta, we'll talk about this later." Dilshad distractedly waved him off rushing after Asad. Asim looked over at a still Najma who's eyes were fixed on Zaheer's face. He stepped forward only to hit Halim's shoulder.
"Leave." He warned. Asim shook his head frustratingly and walked out of the house. A lone tear strolled down Najma's cheek, but she didn't make a sound.
"I'm sorry" Zaheer apologised earnestly, "My intention was not to hurt anyone, I only wanted to tell you all the truth. I am not going to beg you to believe me, but I will not stop fighting until I get justice for my sister." He spoke softly meeting Najma's pooled eyes. He nodded at Halim and then walked out of Khan Villa. Halim rushed forward to grab Najma as she stumbled back; he steadied her before helping her sit down on the sofa. He raked his hair breathing out harshly; he never saw this confrontation coming so soon. He prayed to God for Zoya's health.
"Hey, Zoya..." Asad caressed her forehead; his whole body hovered over hers on the bed. "Sorry, I didn't know how to control my anger; I didn't mean to bark at you. Wake up" He brushed his thumb over her rosy cheeks. Zoya whimpered, her body greedily seeking his closeness. "I'm here, shhh..." He brushed the back of his fingers along her jawline. He placed a soft kiss on her forehead, Zoya's eyes slowly fluttered open to stare into his deep eyes. She could practically breathe the same air as him, his nose rested against hers. "Heyyy" He smiled, Zoya's lips parted slightly while her eyes blinked to focus on his face. He heard the door close behind him but he paid no attention.
"I missed you." Zoya whispered, tears brimming in her eyes. "Asad... I" He placed his finger over her lips to hush her. Zoya closed her eyes soaking in his warmth; she trailed her hand up his body before resting on his neck. She guided him to find her lips; Asad pressed his lips against hers and kissed her hungrily draping half of his body over hers. A groan emanated from deep within his chest when his tongue slid past the seam of her lips, she opened them willingly and trembled against him. Asad cradled her face, he lifted his own for a second before sucking and tasting her lips, pressing feather light kisses.
"I love you." Asad brushed his nose along the length of hers.
"I need to tell you something..." Zoya smiled, Asad hummed admiring every inch of her face while his hands traced her skin. He was just glad to have her conscious, in his arms, well. "I'm-" She paused hearing a knock on the door.
"The doctor is here." Halim announced from outside. Zoya pouted meeting Asad's eyes.
"I'm fine." Asad huffed.
"You fainted sweetheart. You were unconscious, not moving, your body was so still-"
"Okay I got the point. I fainted. I won't do it again." She rolled her eyes.
"Zoya" Asad warned.
"Sorry" She said softly. Asad lifted himself off her and stood upright not letting go of her hand.
"Come in" Asad called out to Halim who opened the door moments later to let the doctor inside. Halim winked at her before closing the door behind him. "She fainted Dr Ghai." Asad told the doctor who shook his head.
"You really need to stop scaring him Zoya." Dr Ghai teased settling on the other side of the bed with his briefcase. Zoya nibbled on her bottom lip watching Asad from the corner of her eyes. She hesitated for a moment before bursting not being able to hold it in.
"Stop!" She shot upright and winced before falling back on the bed, the doctor's hands stopped mid-air. She blinked trying to get her head to stop spinning.
"Zoya?" Asad sat next to her; he looked at her with concern. Zoya looked at the doctor's smiling face and then Asad's.
"She sent the reports to you didn't she?" Zoya questioned Dr Ghai's pleased expression. He nodded.
"What reports?" Asad urged.
"Can you give us a moment please?" Zoya pleaded with the doctor.
"No wait, he needs to check you Zoya." Asad tried to stop the doctor from leaving the room.
"In a minute Asad." Zoya spoke softly.
"What is it?" He murmured unable to remove concern on his face, he was definitely missing something.
"Can you help me sit up?" Asad tried to protest, "Please?" He supported her body up and placed some pillows against the headboard before allowing her to lean back. His hand rested on her thigh, moving them up and down while he patiently waited for her to speak. "I'm..." Her voice betrayed her, she was so overwhelmed with emotions that she didn't know to break the news to him. Her lips trembled slightly, Asad shifted uncomfortably bracing himself for what she was about to say. She took his hand, his eyes followed her every move. She pried his fingers open and then spread his hand flat over her stomach before looking up to meet his eyes. Her teeth sunk onto her bottom lip as she waited for him to react. But she got nothing. He just watched her. His eyes slowly moved to where his hand rested and then her eyes. "You know, for someone who is good at boring games like Sudoku and puzzles, you're really bad at this."
"Huh?" He tilted his head. Zoya beamed at him, he smiled back at his adorable wife not knowing what she was trying to say.
"We're going to have a baby Asad" Zoya whispered, Asad froze. She watched as his whole body went rigid, his face devoid of any emotions. Her breathing shortened, but she didn't move. She waited. And waited. A minute. And then two.
"Say that again." Asad asked her, his tone begging. She crawled forward onto his lap and wrapped his arms around her body, holding his right hand just over her stomach.
"You're going to be a daddy." Zoya whispered into his ears before resting her face in the crook of his neck. "We're going to have a baby. A baby." She dropped her hand to her side, Asad's hand pressed onto her stomach before slowly rubbing circles. She felt him swallow hard, his heart rate accelerating inside him. He tightened his hold around her before slowly rocking. He pressed his lips to her temples.
"A baby..." Asad's voice was filled awe. "Our baby, we're going to have a baby." He repeated not being able to believe it. He tilted his head to look at her face; she had tears running down her face. He slowly kissed her tears away. "Thank you, Thank you so damn much Zoya." He pressed his lips against hers.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Here you go" Asad placed the tablets on Zoya's palm; he held the tip of the glass against her lips. She kept her eyes on him as she swallowed the tablets and then sipped the water. She watched as he moved around the room placing the glass on the table before walking back over to her. He pulled the duvet over her knees, "You should lie down and get some sleep." He told her. Zoya shook her head in a no. He sighed bending down and placing a kiss on her forehead.
"Asad?" Zoya called softly, pleading for him to look at her. He turned around only to have her grip his hand for dear life. He faced her slowly before his eyes trailed over her body to finally meet her eyes. "Please talk to me." She whispered as a lone tear trailed down her cheek. He sat down on the bed beside her and brushed her tears away. She placed her hand over his on her cheek, her brows furrowing, her lips trembling. She made a mistake. She should have never hidden Asim's past from Asad. She should have told him everything sooner. The lack of trust in Asad's eyes was breaking her. He was over the moon about the baby; he held and stroked her stomach for over an hour after the doctor left confirming the good news. He held on as his mother and sister came to congratulate them. He held on as a promise to protect her and their baby from the world.
"I don't know what to say Zoya. What do you want me to say?" His defeated tone did something to her heart. The anger and disappointment was clearly there, he just wasn't showing it to her because of her condition. She hated this. She hated herself. "Do you trust me?" He asked her. Zoya's heart clenched, she felt it squeeze the life out of her. He doubted her trust in him otherwise he would have never asked her such a question.
"More than myself, more than anything in the world Asad." Her voice cracked. She watched his face with panicked expressions; she jumped forward into his arms and clutched him against her body. "I'm sorry, I was so scared. Asim loved Najma, he is a good guy. I thought he told Najma everything. He didn't do anything. I didn't want you to reject him based on his past, a past he had no control over." She cried into his neck. She squeezed him not feeling him reciprocate the hug, it took him a moment before he embraced her tightly.
"You should have told me, I would have trusted you. I trust you Zoya, I trust you with my life." He told her, he brushed his hand over her back soothingly feeling her tears wet his neck as she kissed the one spot over and over again. "I didn't know what to think when I found out all of this from Zaheer, and then finding out you hid it from me." He sighed, "Hey shhh, don't cry." He pulled away from her and cupped her face. "Stop crying please." He pleaded brushing her tears away.
"Zarine is alive Asad." She mumbled staring up at him with wide, innocent eyes. "She isn't dead." She shook her head in a no. "Yes, she tried to commit suicide, but she isn't dead. He lied to everyone. Trust me" She winced, "Halim has done some research, please speak to him." She grabbed his hand and clutched it against her chest.
"I'll sort this out. You relax, don't worry about anything. Just promise me this one thing Zoya, for my sake, for our baby's sake. You will relax and take care of yourself." He stared deep into her teary eyes, Zoya nodded.
"I promise." She pulled his hand as she lay back against the pillow, Asad swayed towards her wrapping her up in his arms, her body fit perfectly against his. Her back against his front, they both curled up together, their hands protectively placed over their baby, drifted off to sleep.
Zoya groaned awake, feeling a weird sensation inside her chest rising upwards. Her eyes snapped fully open, she threw the duvet off her, jumped out of bed and stumbled towards the bathroom in a daze. She fell on her knees in front of the toilet and puked into it. She didn't know how long she kneeled in front of the toilet, she grunted a soft cry, her body overcome with weakness. Once she was sure there was nothing left to leave her body, she tried to reach for the edge of the bathtub to lean against it however she missed it and fell onto the carpet before curling up into a ball. Morning sickness sucks she told herself.
"Zoya?" Asad called out before rushing into the bathroom, he widened his eyes at the sight in front of him. "Zoya, are you okay?" He lifted her up into his arms and then placed her on the bathroom counter. She hung her head low, resting the tip of her head against his chest.
"Morning sickness sucks lemons." She murmured sleepily. Asad chuckled, the rumble in chest made her groan. "Stop moving" She swatted his arm lazily.
"Sorry" He tried not to laugh, but his moving chest betrayed him. She whined like a baby not lifting her head. "Come on let's get you freshened up. You stink sweetheart." She snorted but made no attempt to move. His comforting strokes on her arms made her sleepy. "Come on, Ammi made breakfast."
"Ammi, I love Ammi." Zoya lifted her head to look up at him; she pulled out her bottom lip in an adorable pout. Asad shook his head trying to hide his smile. His wife was too cute. He grabbed her toothbrush and applied toothpaste on it before passing it to her. She took it with a smile and brushed her teeth.
"I'm going to run you a bath." He told her before kneeling on the floor beside the bathtub and turning the taps on. She admired her husband as he poured in lavender essence into the bath before running his fingers in the water to check the temperature. He smiled at her over his shoulder; he got up and stood in front of her. "Ready?" She nodded eagerly. He pulled her three quarter pants down and allowed it to puddle below her. She raised her eyebrow at him, his lips twitched. He held the edge of her pyjama top before pulling it over her head and throwing it into the wash basket. He sucked in a breath at the sight of her bare chest; he leaned forward and kissed her chest. Zoya moaned anchoring her arm around his neck. She wrapped her legs around his waist and allowed him to lift her off the counter. She tilted her head back, he grunted at the loss of her chest pressed against him.
"Wait till I get bigger, no more easy lifting." She teased kissing his cheek.
"You really underestimate your husband's strength my dear wife." He nuzzled his nose against her neck. She squealed feeling his stubble tickling her chest. He laughed gently placing her inside the bathtub. He wet her hair and shampooed it while she relaxed against the bath.
"I don't know how I got so lucky" Zoya closed her eyes for a few moments, only being able to hear his steady breathing. She opened her eyes and met his intense ones. "You're going to be an amazing father." He smiled.
"I'm working on being the best husband right now." He stroked her forehead.
"You are already the best my love. There is no-one like you. Everything feels like a dream, you feel like a dream." She took his hand and kissed the back of it.
"Are you happy?"
"Very happy." She beamed, "But can you do this one thing for me?"
"What is that?" He leaned forward,
"Kiss me." She licked her lips, his eyes turned wicked.
"Anything my beautiful wife wants, my wife gets." He winked. And kissed her he did.
Dilshad kissed Zoya's forehead placing ginger tea in front of her. She read a few religious verses and blew all over her. She caressed her face before getting busy in the kitchen again.
"Where's Tamater?" Zoya asked, noticing her empty chair. Asad sat down next to her and filled her plate with food.
"She's over at Jamila's house. They had something organised for weeks." Dilshad replied.
"I need to talk to her." Zoya met Asad's eyes before looking down at her breakfast. He placed his hand over her thigh in reassurance.
"We'll sort this out." He said softly.
"It's my fault." She sighed.
"It isn't." He gave her a stern look. She nodded.
"Where is Halim?" She asked.
"He'll be back, he's just gone to report to HQ." Asad smiled.
"He's awesome Asad, you better pay him well." Zoya sipped her ginger tea. "I need to speak to Asim as well." Asad paused whatever he was doing to look over at her.
"I'm not going to stop you from talking to your friend Zoya. Just keep him away from my sister until I sort this out." He tucked her hair behind her ear before continuing with his breakfast. She watched him for a few minutes, his words gave her hope. She met Dilshad's reassuring eyes.
Asim: What did you mean yesterday? Zarine is alive?
Zoya glanced down at Asim's message. She hesitated to reply to his message. Why? She didn't know. She wanted to speak to Halim regarding his research. He was so convinced that Zarine is alive as Haya. And Zaheer's reaction confirmed this.
Zoya: Why didn't you tell Najma anything?
She replied back.
Asim: She's not replying to my messages. Is she okay?
Zoya: What do you think? Please just give her some space. Let Asad sort this out.
Asim: Sort what out Zoe. Everything is over.
Zoya: If you love Najma, then nothing is over.
Asim: The asshole couldn't have timed his revenge better.
Zoya pressed her forehead.
Zoya: He loves his sister. I don't blame him for trying to get justice. His revenge is just misplaced. We'll get through this. We'll prove you had nothing to do with this.
Asim: You do trust me don't you?
Zoya: Of course I do you idiot.
Asim: Just stay with me Zoe.
Zoya rubbed the back of her neck, she felt flushed and uncomfortable. She felt stressed; she didn't know how to solve anything. She couldn't really do anything as she promised Asad that she will relax. She hurt for Najma who fell in love only to face so many obstacles. She must feel betrayed.
"Hmmm" She moaned feeling his hands massaging her shoulder. His touch soothed her insides.
"Heyy" He kissed her temples.
"Hey. How was work?" She placed her hand over his and pulled him around to sit down next to her. She snuggled into his chest and took in his scent.
"I want to retire already." He joked.
"That bad huh?" She smiled.
"I spoke to the doctor and made you a timetable. Your appointments are all sorted. And I may have ordered a few things for the baby." Zoya moved out of his hold and looked up at him.
"A few things huh?"
"Well a lot of few things." He shrugged innocently. Zoya burst out laughing.
"Asad, we have a long way to go yet."
"I know I know. I just couldn't help it."
"You are wanting to retire because you want to be here with us right? Nothing to do with having a bad day." She failed to stop herself from smiling up at him.
"Erm yeah." He kissed her nose.
"Come on, let's get something to eat. I'm starving."
"You haven't eaten yet?" He frowned.
"First of all, I am eating for two people" She showed him two fingers, "And you forget I empty everything out of myself at least 4 times a day." She showed him four fingers.
"Come on, Sorry I asked. Let's get you fed." He lifted her off the sofa and dragged her into the kitchen.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Zoya watched from across the room as Halim and Asad conversed.
"Can I meet Zaheer?" Zoya nibbled on the fruit from the fruit plate placed on her lap.
"NO" They both replied sternly and then nodded at each other in agreement. Zoya grumbled.
"Gosh, I was only asking. I won't go alone."
"No." This time Asad rebuked her.
"Not a good idea in your condition boss lady." Halim shrugged.
"I'm not going to fight a war. I just want to talk to him about Zarine. I wasn't best friends with her, but she was around Asim and I was fond of her despite everything. I'd like to know what drove the girl to the point of madness that she committed suicide. I just want to talk to Zaheer." She explained. Asad shook his head in a no.
"You called his sister crazy." Halim reminded her.
"I was angry. She acted crazy so I wasn't wrong there, I just didn't mean to call her that in front of him" She leaned back against the couch folding her legs under her. "Zarine is alive." She closed her eyes. "I hope you're right Halim, I hope you're right." Asad walked over towards her and pulled her against his side.
"Hey, if Halim says she is alive, then she is. It's okay."
"I wonder what else he wants" Zoya looked over at Halim.
"Let me gather some information. If you really want to meet him, then I'm going to get some solid proof." Halim looked at Asad. "We'll both be there, but she is related to their past. Maybe she can fix this." He waited for Asad to react. He tightened his hold on his wife.
"I'll be fine. You'll both be with me. I just have some questions for him." Zoya spoke softly, rubbing her hand over his chest.
"Okay, we'll see. Thanks for coming Halim." Asad stretched his hand out and Halim shook it eagerly.
"No worries. I'll see you tomorrow at 2 boss lady. Take care." He grabbed his equipment and his gun on his way out.
"Tamater?" Zoya sat up as she came in through the front door.
"I'm really tired bhabie. Goodnight both of you." Najma ran up the stairs and into her room. Zoya sat back dejected.
"She'll come around." He rubbed her arm.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"You have a lot of guts" Zaheer sneered at Asim as he walked in through the garden of the little cottage he was renting.
"What the hell do you want from me?" Asim questioned taking menacing steps towards Zaheer who didn't seem fazed.
"I should be asking you, you've come here to meet me after all?" He crossed his arms.
"Is she really alive?" Asim asked.
"You killed her" Zaheer replied.
"I didn't do anything." Asim shook his head, "She was crazy."
"And why I wonder. She was crazy in love with you. You played her. You bas***d. She was pregnant." Zaheer fisted his hands.
"Not my kid bro." Asim stepped back with wide eyes. Zaheer pounced forward.
"You're going down. You're going to rot in jail" Zaheer growled.
"I didn't do anything." Asim panicked stepping back seeing him advance; he dodged his punch before throwing his fist into Zaheer's face. He stumbled back holding his face before slowly, but dangerously looking up. A smirk playing on his lips wiping the blood with his thumb. "Why the f**k are you smiling you asshole?" Asim barked.
"Well, you see officer. This man is really messed up in the head. He is harassing me and now physically attacking me. Tut tut" Zaheer touched his cheek. Asim turned around to find a few police officers behind him waiting to arrest him.
"He attacked me first." Asim yelled in frustration, "I didn't do anything."
"Tell that to the judge." The leading officer grabbed both of his hands behind him and handcuffed him.
"I'm going to kill you, you son of a bit-" Asim was thrown into the back of the jeep.
"You're not helping yourself there son." Another officer closed the doors while Asim cursed.
Zaheer walked into the cottage and closed the door behind him. He cleaned his face before walking into his sister's room.
"He will never ever come close to you ever again baby girl." Zaheer bent down to place a kiss on her forehead. She met his eyes.
"I don't think Zoya feels the same way. I'm desperate too. I'm working on it, I'll bring her to you. You'll be okay again." He brushed his hand over cheek wiping away her tears. Najma's face flashed before his eyes, her pained expression. He never thought he'd regret anything more than the moment he put that sad, empty look on her face. He saw that look on his sister's face all those years ago and he never thought he'd find himself guilty of making someone else's sister feel the same way. His heart broke all those years ago, he was desperate to make his sister okay, he tried to mend her broken heart. He failed as a brother. He lost his sister's liveliness.
"Are you out of your goddamn mind?" Zoya slapped Asim as he came out of the building. Asim stood with his head hung low, Asad behind him with his arms crossed. Halim stood beside her, his eyes narrowed at Asim.
"I wanted to know if she was alive. He attacked me first the little shit." Asim cursed. Asad coughed behind him. Asim sobered straight away.
"Get inside the frickin car." Zoya barked before jumping into Asad's car without glancing back at her friend. Asim stepped forward only to have Asad's hand on his shoulder stopping him. Halim crowded his space.
"You drove her to commit suicide didn't you?" Halim questioned, Asim back into Asad's broad chest.
"What are you talking about? I didn't do anything. Ask Zoya." Asim spoke defensively.
"We're asking you." Asad breathed harshly over his shoulder.
"You know everything, I'm innocent." Asim stepped away from the little alpha cage that he was surrounded in.
"Not everything." Asad mumbled. "Get in the other car, Halim will drop you off." He ordered before joining Zoya inside the car. "You okay?"
"Yeah I'm fine. I don't know what's gotten into him." She nodded towards the other car.
"I think I do." Asad started the engine and drove off. They drove in silence, he glanced over at her to find her staring at him. "What?"
"You said you think you do."
"I think there's more to Asim than meets the eye." He focused on the road. Zoya scoffed.
"You gotta be joking me. Are you serious. This is Asim." She reasoned.
"You gotta trust me on this Zoya."
"And I do. But you're wrong about Asim." She got out of the car and headed inside the house.
"Zoya, listen..." He brushed his hair back tiredly. He really needed to learn to keep his mouth shut. He needed to tread on this topic carefully. He has his doubts regarding Asim but he wouldn't mention all of them to Zoya. He's just going to solve this puzzle all by himself if he doesn't want her upset at him. Loyalties have been tested before, he was going to protect his family at all costs. With that thought in mind, he followed his wife inside the house.
