| Konkona wins best actress award in NYC |
| Lalit K Jha Monday, November 12, 2007: (New York): Acclaimed national award winning Indian actress, Konkana Sen Sharma, was bestowed with the best actress award at an Indian film festival - the largest outside India - that concluded in the Big Apple on Sunday night. The Page 3 and Omkara fame Konkana Sen Sharma was given this award for her lead role in the film Dosar, which was screened during the five-day Mahindra Indo-American Arts Council film festival. Daughter of journalist Mukul Sharma and Aparna Sen, the acclaimed film director, Konkana was given the award at a glittering function on Sunday night by Madhur Jaffrey. The award carries a cash prize of $10,000. Director Rituparno Ghosh also won the best director award for Dosar. Among other awards given at the conclusion of the five-day film festival was: the best actor award to Danny Denzongpa (for his role in Frozen); best film award to Manorama Six feet Under and Verizon People's Choice Award to Love Story by Amit Gupta. The concluding ceremony of the film festival and the awards ceremony were held at the prestigious Asia Society, which was attended by a number of celebrities including Mira Nair, Abhay Deol, Salman Rushdie, Milind Soman, Pan Nalin, Mylene Jampanoi, Shashi Tharoor, Shonali Bose and Buddhadeb Das Gupta. The film festival that kicked off with the screening of film Saawariya on November 7 attracted a record number of 8,000 people. As many as 50 films were screened during the five days, which included 12 world premieres and 11 US premieres. A key initiative of this year's festival was Script Link, a two day programme designed to foster relationships between the film industry executives and 14 writers of South Asian descent, said Aroon Shivdasani, head of the Indo-American Arts Council. "This first edition of Script Link provided the selected writers the opportunity to interact with potential investors, development executives, producers and agents such as Sony Pictures Classics, Magnolia Pictures and GreenStreet Films in over 200 meetings," she said. |
