Episode 343

Peela rang

Peele rang ki holi, pehle bhi kheli thi
Na jaana tabhi, aise nikhregi
Rang haathon ka, ho aur gehra
Iss laali ka aks, bane tera chehra

Tere chehre pe lag jaaye mera rang
Apne chehre pe lagaloon tera rang
Tere chehre ko chupaloon apne rang mein
Reh jaaye na adhoori koi rasam

Ab nahin koi bandish apne darmiyaan
Tujhe lekar jaoonga apne jahaan
Peele rang ki hoor, mujhe kare majboor
Ab rehna nahin hai aur tujhse door

Translation:

Earlier too had played yellow holi
Didn't know then, it would shine so
May the colour of hands deepen further
May the redness reflect on your face

Let your face get my colour
Let me put your colour on my face
I would hid your face with my colour
No ritual be left out

Now there be no more restriction between us
I will take you to my world
This yellow beauty makes me helpless
Now no more do I want to be away from you

a spoonful of sanak
episode 345

right at the end, he said, "sanki ho tum, you're really mad!"

there was a note of love and indulgence and joy in it.

"lekin ek baat boloon? main bhi bahut khush hoon..."

but shall i tell you something, he continued, i am also very happy.

she shot back with a loopy look, "issliye toh hum itna dar rahe hain... laad governor ke muskoorahat dekhkar."

that's why i am so scared... looking at laad governor's smile.

laad governor's smile.

in that simple single interaction after an entire episode of unnecessary drama and inelegant storytelling, there was the essential story of iss pyaar ko... of one arnav singh raizada who met a strange ladki called khushi kumari gupta one unmarked evening of their lives. and how she made those opaque, blank eyes catch fire... smile.

and then how that smile made her want to go a little more sanki.

the design thrills me. because it's simple smart and powerful.. and by touching on it every now and then, even amid all sorts of silliness, it keeps us anchored and makes us smile. not just that khadoos laad governor.

i love the fact that khushi's sanak is an essential ingredient of this story, not just something added on to make a tv lead more cutesy, more sweet innocent girl like. if khushi didn't have sanak... how would she cut through the dark despair that hardens asr's heart.

a heart in fact more loving than most, and aching and hiding behind gussa and paisa and power talk.

there's an elemental note here. ice and fire, rock and water, earth and wind. of things inherent in a structure, a person... that naturally interacts with the other... it cuts through... it cleaves and joins.

her reply also reflected that integral and specific connection, their framework of pyaar. what she says she is scared of, actually thrills her... khushi was always a girl who thought differently, felt not only the prescribed things... she couldn't get this laad governor out of her mind from day one... and the more he raged and insulted, the more she was drawn to him... she dreamt of him. she obsessed about him... she couldn't leave him. for perhaps the sanak needed to find its true meaning, its destiny... after all, she did believe in that and so it led her here. here to that impregnable wall of gussa, one that her fluid sanki mind just wanted to break through... even if she didn't know why.

and when her ways and who she was released a heart from this hard rigid place and felt its beauty, she perhaps knew a sense of homecoming she never had known...

i am rambling.

what i mean is simply, the two characters have traits that seem aligned perfectly. they fit into each other and create something beautiful.

every love story is different. the two people who are in it make it what it is. the powerful stories have this sense of one igniting the other's very being in them...

i feel the writers really got their key to the story right... whether by design or chance i don't know... but without sanka and gussa this story would not have been half what it is no matter how gorgeous the protagonists.

i was pretty irritated with all that went on on before this. shyam lurked. dadi said, "yeh shadi nahin hogi!" this wedding shall not happen... a la seventies' hindi movies. garima quaked. the oblivious family played dumb charade. dadi paced. shyam lurked and gave slanted smiles (please, only one man knows how to slant them lips, so stop doing that). dadi paced. there was bekhabar besabar talk as all gathered in the hall, sabar being patience, i guess more hints that asr will have to patient as in perhaps the wedding won't take place... dadi did ekta serial style entry and slo-moed to khushi. she caught hold of her hand and wrenched it off asr's. all looked shocked/surprised/scared (has ekta ever considered trademarking this face by face reaction shots format? it's really bad and needs to be annotated).

laad gov looked dishy (okay this i did like).

then dadi did one more ekta twist. she gave the ancestral kangans to khushi and welcomed her to the family. i wanted to scream, who stole the creative spirit of ipk writers... i want to set dadi after them.

but really. no need to think of all that. not when asr's eyes get so lit up and whizzy and sanka devi whirls around and runs off after delivering her punch line. yay, it's her and no double. asr, you be in trouble.

(petty rhyme needed at this moment, milord, samjhe aap.)

Episode 331

Pyaar ki dori

Masti se bhari khushiyon ki shaam
Mehendi rachegi piya ke naam
Naach uthi hai umangon ki toli
Kisiko pukare alhad pyaar ki dori

Jis dori se nikla tha nafrat ka caravaan
Us dori ko aaj milgayi pehchaan
Hichkichahat thi kabhi iske paas jaane ki
Ab haq se bandhegi ye pyaar ki dori

Mehakti mehendi mein bas gaya ek naam
Us naam ne bheje dil ko kai paigaam
Pehle se kareeb aagayi ye jodi
Ab kabhi na tootegi ye pyaar ki dori

A nice happy feeling to this one Durga di. Enjoyed reading it.. Alhad pyar sounds absolutely lovely.. and the nafrat turning to pyar ki dori is beautifully woven into the poetry..

episode 343

"see how she leans her cheek upon her hand.
o, that i were a glove upon that hand
that i might touch that cheek!"
~ shakespeare, romeo and juliet ~

romeo might have pined from a distance upon seeing his love and wishing to touch her on her tender cheek, arnav singh raizada was having none of all that sighing from afar though. he made sure he got some time alone with her. and he went near. very very ear. hehehe maybe I will just giggle and blush my entire way through this post.

in an episode where practically everything felt infantile, just a few minutes sparkled with a fabulous portrayal of desire. nothing silly or coy about it. an adult, deep, breath stopping, ear heating feeling between a man and a woman. i don't think television has ever seen such a keen delineation of this elemental thing. i at least haven't.

can't remember if ever i have been in a state watching a man and a woman just messing about, getting closer, playing like kittens, a stalking of big cats in their body language. and also a terribly deep emotion. which adds something ethereal, innocent, pristine to this voluptuous longing, this assault of needing.

khushi was a giggly girl or trying to be one, but arnav singh raizada wouldn't let her be, his every move called out to the woman in her, the one who wants, oh so wants him.

why i wonder, must women's desire for their men be so carefully guarded. what would happen if she showed her feelings? will society fall apart?

they had haldi, paste of turmeric, wheat, and more all over their body. that in itself added a layer, a sensuality... then he started wanting to be where a grown man with a wife would want to be... in her arms, close to her... perhaps all this putting of turmeric paste on both their bodies had aroused him, he not too concerned with the meaning of the ritual, just watching her rapt as she got haldi all over.

she was disconcerted, so she hid behind explanations of customs... but would he let her be?

oh no... say, first you have to put the paste on the feet then the...
and he'll cut in with the huskiest, most intimate murmur of, "jaanta hoon... pehle pair..."

hey hey heyheyhey will the music go and my breath will start grazing against my epiglottis. the whole tione of the scene will change in an instant.

"phir haath... phir kandhe (voice opening out and falling away to a whisper even as my stomach crashed to my toes) phir sar..."

i know... first the feet... then the hands... then shoulders... then head...

she had to turn away then, the growing need and desire too hard to handle

he lifted his gaze and looks at her... something so terribly beautifully grown up in that gaze. really, not too many actors put in this level of emotion and interpretation for a tv hero role.

she had to play with him though, she turned on a mischievous smile and flicked his nose with some haldi that she had taken off her body.

a touch of haldi... a waiting... an arousal... khushi can't deny it...

again she turned and walked away. a question in his gaze... and he followed her. there was something timeless i felt about that walk of him toward her.. drawn and at the same time in command of the moment... choosing to go to her.

i made a vm once which had the words, dil tha sufie... hum chal diye... the heart was sufi and i walked on toward what i had to. words to that effect. i had laid the words over this sequence.

that touching of her back with the back of his fingers, smearing her with haldi. almost intoxicated the look on his face. our television won't allow conventional gestures of desire to be presented, but necessity can be the mother of fab invention. who'd have thought you could do so much with just two people, fully clothed and a bit of haldi paste. the four poster bed suggested intimacy and beauty but gosh the room was supremely pink and tacky... and yet, nothing mattered, just the feeling they were lost in and you were slowly drowning in.

when he walked almost into her as she backed away, a thrill shot through the frame, through you. and then that bending down of the face, a cheek going closer closer making... contact. and a girl almost taken by that touch. would he stop even then? no, again, on the other side... it's only cheeks rubbing, you think, and a part of you knows, there is nothing "only" about it... it's sublime absolute love making. right there.

he played with her, he said he can't see her face behind all the haldi... so he was following the custom of not seeing the ride post haldi. when she said h had loads of turmeric on him too, he disconcerted her totally with that sexy, kissne lagaya, who put it.

i loved this shot that started right on top and closed in.. just look at them in each other's arms, melding. in sync.

she kept on talking about doing the right thing, her eyes kept on saying something else, her body arched toward him, her breath was scattered.

that desire. that was all.

thoughts

~ how foolish to they believe the viewer is?

~ so if you have turmeric on your face no one can recognise you? hawk eye dadi didn't see garima beyond the thin layer of yellow, and just in case we didn't get the point, bua ji loudly said even she wouldn't have known garima. everyone except Shyam was stupid apparently.. viewers writers people around..even ASR in a way who missed all this sneaking around..

~ why would garima keep a picture from the past in her open cupboard within easy access and run to it and start looking at it with fear raging in her eyes the moment she sees dadi? ah, so we get the point that she was the woh aurat and also so that shyam babua gets to pry and see it all. so at last it has been decided that garima will be the bad girl and oh the rush to tell the tale. so much happened in these twenty minutes. I have always felt these weddings episodes were too rushed.. One time I was trying to find that farmhouse scene and the namak ishq ka dance and I kep skipping that episode thinking of this is sangeet.. then finally realised sangeet, bachelor party, dance, consumation, all in one..

~ if the girl can't see the boy post haldi, what is khushi doing in asr's house and why are they all playing passing the parcel? what's going on with story telling.

~ also noticing many hints being dropped that suggest asr and khushi's wedding may not go through... earlier he'd spoken of how if he lets go of her hand he won't hold it again. this episode, something about "bharosa nahin hai mujh pe..." don't you have faith in me. i wish serials would get out of the messiness of constant trp battle, never quite sure where they are headed.

never mind.. look at that yellow smeared cheek.

First I thought I would bashfully giggle my way through the post, but then I was too breathless and speechless to even make incoherent sounds..

I get the feeling Khushi tried to be playful because she could see the desire and didn't know how to handle it.. a little shy.. a little inexperienced.. a little never having known such a thing could be directed at her and that she could want it equally badly.. Anyway end effect was wildly exciting. Not watching the episodes but your words made it easy to feel that grazing of two fingers and the rubbing of a stubbled cheek.

About the Garima fiasco and the passing the parcel.. really everyone seems to have coolly lost their brains.. luckily a bit of heart and heat remains..

for once i completely identified with shyam. he had been perplexed by what was going on with garima, he was spying around trying to catch the drift. and he had this glazed look in his eyes as if he understood nothing, till at last he did as dadi named the "woh aurat."

her name was none other that... garima.

i am utterly perplexed, trying to make sense of what i am seeing, convinced there was a "woh story" and it certainly did not lead to the marriage of asr and khushi a few episodes down.

"woh story" had a separation between the two on the cards. there are just too many hint hints of that for it all to have meant nothing. Yes I think so too.. specially with this episode and the previous one where NK was like mujhe haldi laga lo on nannav's behalf.. what the..

inbhestigasson karelka padi, i aver and check a few things. oh my dearest mami crazy indi di

true, jainesh is still lead writer, but by the time wedding takes place, ved raj is back on the helm. this whole period seems to be a quick wrap up that will actually bid farewell to a man and a woman: jainesh the writer and dadi the outsider.

true stories change in serials. i remember how we kept seeing nk filming everything during the wedding of payal and akash including jijaji's lecherous moves and then that not featuring at all in any part of story telling. haha i had forgotten all about that. Completely unrelated but, I was watching another serial and in two subplots the villain was caught red handed because of hidden cameras.. I kept thinking maybe the writers forgot they have already used the plot device before.

but this time here there were not only dialogues that spell trouble, there was completely puzzling action.

why would the bride come to the groom's home suddenly after haldi only to play passing the parcel? i thought they were not even supposed to meet. in fact, doesn't haldi usually happen on the day of the wedding? I don't like anything about this passing the parcel.

so why would it happen before sangeet?

and if you remember, they suddenly decided to spring a "surprise" on the guptas on the day of haldi and hold it at their place. really? would anyone do that to the girls' family... they are totally unprepared for this.

could it be that haldi was bunged in later? after the passing the parcel shooting was done? and if so, why? its only use would have been to establish shyam's noticing of garima's discomfort and her looking at the photograph (which is why it would have to be at the guptas'... uff indi bond hello hi bye bye... this is too exciting). I feel like am in the final chapter of a detective novel and the detective has made his final reveal.. way to go Indi di.. am completely convinced.

following this there would be shyam's discovery of the woh aurat's name and then the "clever" mixing up of medicines so dadi catches out garima.

i had a feeling while watching haldi, they had decided only around that time to cast garima as the other woman... till then all possibilities were on the table... including khushi's own mother being the lady. hmm you thought that? Interesting. I didn't ever give it much thought. Does that make me a less serious fan? hai re nand kissor.. I need to come up with more theories..

then there was that maa's garden. when did they add that in? obviously a last minute thing which is why all shots of asr and khushi together were done with doubles. khushi's double had the most unkhushi hand.

and in the scene just before that, leading up to them leaving together,
asr's hand double was a woman (or a man who likes to keep long nails unlike asr) and the girl whose face he was wiping was totally not khushi. though he, sigh, was he himself and in no mood to look ordinary. I am missing Sohara..

about that getting away with khushi in the middle of a family visit... again not exactly what dulhas and dulhans do especially if they are following all the rituals properly as we are told asr has decided to.

i had a feeling the passing the parcel scene and the one in his room with him pulling her back, were taken at the same time when story was still one of separation. later other scenes in the room and the dadi finding garima scenes were edited in.

disconcerting shots of khushi holding asr's cheek, her nails red and mehendi on fingers in one shot, next shot, no nail polish, no mehendi, clearly not sanaya's fingers on his cheeks.

then the garden which failed to touch me. the story of maa and plants to pat. and then himsaying exactkly why he likes to garden. not once, twice... was this asr? was this ipk? we all knew by now those plants connected him to feelings deep within and his mother was the core of these emotions. why must we be told all this? me too

jainesh has a heavy handed way and subtlety is long gone from narrative. but to have asr tearful almost for nearly ten minutes... what were they thinking?

terribly garbled the whole thing.

as for the dialogues that so plainly spoke of them being torn asunder soon, there was: "karna padega khushi... bharossa nahin hai mujhpe?" you'll have to do it khushi, don't you have faith in me? these dialogues are so commonplace.

nice cap

later:

"ret ke tarah aapke ungliyo ke beech se nikal jayenge... aur mauqa milte hi itni tezi se bhagenge ki hume aap hume dhoond nahin payenge... samjhe aap?" i'll slip away like sand between the fingers and the moment i get a chance i'll run so fast, you won't be able to find me, d'you understand?

"phir kabhi aisa kahna bhi mat kehna!" don't ever say that!

"arnav ji?"

"promise?"

later still he asked her if she trusted him.

to me, these are signs of impending mayhem not marriage.

also, khushi talks about him banging the phone down... which happened way before haldi. or did it happen just the previous evening, when haldi was not yet written in?

alas, shyam had his answer but not me. sherlock holmes or hercule poirot would definitely be needed to get to the bottom of this mystery.

all i could sense was a massive change in the entire story of ipk. and i was sure garima was not the "woh aurat" the original storyteller had in mind.

a most disturbing episode, i kept feeling yanked around, a moustache drawn on my upper lip, eyes blindfolded. I hate that moustache .. ASR does not do silly things when he can rather rub cheeks or smear haldi with two fingers or even yell the bit..

thoughts

~ barun sobti smiled as he looked down and then khushi spoke of disappeariung like sand... did you see how the expression changed? gorgeous.

~ mami and bua dancing away in the background while shyam stalked garima, something crazy and cute there. "arre chaliye, nandkissore!" said mami, "arre, hello hi bye bye, kahan chale?" replied bua ji... the adversaries in a chummy mood... was a nice moment. sweet.. don't remember it but reading this made me smile. the next person that ask me to arre chaliye is going to get the reply arre, hello hi byw bye, kaha chale.

~ who goes and yells at someone like that after a tragedy. why is dadi written so badly? and she slapped garima? how bizarre... really a very ekta feel to all that is going on.

~ asr said, "tumhe yahan laane ka matlab hai ki hum ek ho gaye... tum aaj se meri patni ho... meri maa ki bahu." the significance of bringing you here today is that we are now one... you are my wife from today... my mother's daughter in law.

huh? asr, amnesia? this is your "legally wedded wife" remember? haw really.. bad bad asr.

something very thick and soggy in that statement, also it seems to say, the marriage won't take place.

why that "arnav" from khushi after that?

maybe i should hire shyam to crack all the puzzles. hahaha brilliant Indi di.. he anyway was a know it all.

For few minutes can I forget am actually a fan of the show and not a sceptic critic.. Enjoyed reading everything you noted.. Oh but then I enjoyed too much.. that puts me firmly back into the ipk fan category story or no story ..

hi rhea,

great to see you and bahut saare thankyous... i like what you say about her never having had such desire felt for her and that return arousal in herself, they were both so good here.

wildly exciting. yes. esactly so.

question in my head always remains, every time i watch and feel various parts of my body react and rarely the obvious ones, how the h did they do this.

true... that heart and the heat has me coming back. and will get me to finish my "thesis," hyuk.

thanks, rhea... it is because we are pagal fans we look at everything and wonder about everything too. the writer tells us dekhna hai toh dekho, the producer talks of ipk running its course (uhhuh, ipk does't run, it lies fabulously on an suv seat and entices us), the channel turns this whole thing into an ego battle, but we keep watching and loving... even criticising is soggy with our pyaar... what's to become of us.

just this afternoon i met a lady who remembered the show and said she loved the girl, i said the boy's not too bad either. her eyes sparkled and she said, yeah, but alas it's because of him the show ended, he went off to make films. you should have heard one indi di hahhahah.

so glad you enjoyed the sceptic's take.

tacky, corny, bad choreography, kitchy lyrics.

so why was i smiling my guts out?

why was i remembering an evening, a very late evening, almost 27 years ago?

the only thing i would change: khushi's earrings.

episode 346
sangeet sangeet

i absolutely agree about khushi's earrings as i watch the episode more than three years after writing this. this was written more than three years ago on crooner, straight after watching the sangeet of asr khushi episode the very first time. and what i felt then remains unchanged.. i was grinning last night too. so i'll just stick to the take... here goes.

actually, after the tension of the past few days, just the time for this goofy, loving break. one evening when we need not worry about what's to come.

to tell the truth, as the episode started and khushi took off all ott and haw!, i was worried. not a great one for spoofs and parodies me. oh i usually laugh and chortle through them but curiously, along the way somewhere i disconnect completely. but yesterday, i have to say, i found myself still engaged and beaming away as the scene faded away on the last shot.

what a shot that was. he looks at her and smiles. amused, loving, completely in the moment; she smiles back, delighted and in love, still clapping with glee. they turn back toward the family on stage, their enjoyment of the "surprise" all over their faces, not a care in the world. freeze.

"You smiled and talked to me of nothing and I felt that for this I had been waiting long."

~~~~ rabindranath tagore ~~~~
i hope: har pal yoohin khooshiya rahein... chehro pe bhi smiliya khilein.
unchoreographed choreography (honeypriya's description). that's what made it work, that and the obvious love and good wishes being showered by the family on two precious members who had gone through much. the homey, kitschy, cut out feel made it an offering from the heart.
matters.
otherwise i'd never have got past those horrendous colours and badly rhymed words. i started to giggle as i remembered at my wedding, my dad's chachi's sister, perennially in "let me write a poem mode" at all marriages, leaping up with her really awful ditty on my husband and me and reading it out loud with extreme relish while my friends and cousins rofled, my aunts tried to keep a straight face, and i cringed wondering will the cooky hubs ever let me live this down. then there was my dad's second coz with her harmonium and her long song in nasal monotone. one in the morning, straight after the wedding, my bengali bashor ghor, kind of sangeet ambience but post nuptials, delaying the sr (same problem). there too was that undeniable element: love of family, no matter how extended and how many times removed.
nk and his thing for older women, maybe time for a real "hatke" romance in ipk? absolutely loved him and utkarsha naik, they captured the essence, mami ji was quite a khushi ji, nk tried his best to emulate hotwa, well since he is my hotwa no. 2, i won't wrinkle my nose at the attempt. karan g is a trained dancer, but mami ji is not too bad either i was surprised to note. while the "poolside pe hua, almost first time kissiya," was funny, the two flowers thrust up front at the "right" moment, was my favourite. perfect spoof, felt like a shared joke between all of us, creatives, actors, viewers, everybody. part of our collective unconscious, the "two flowers" gambit to get a kiss past censors and sensibilities, before hindi films became "bollywood." must say, i kind of like it. 🤣 and hasn't crooner been calling for a kiss even if it's the do phool type for a while, esp last week?
the non sophisticated, almost rustic humour has a warmth of old, and weddings are just the place for it. as i watched khushi's entrance and exaggerated curiosity and demand to know what surprise had been planned, i was a bit irritated. then i recalled the state of the bride to be during the many days of wedding. it is tough, a hyper emotion starts to invade despite one's best efforts. some people get tearful, some cranky, khushi is over excited and "nyaka," super girly being the best translation i can do of that bengali word.
it struck me, there was something ineffably "natural" about all of them here, in this milieu. it was nice to see nani in form, but sorry no one can take off the shades like you know who 😆; bua ji, payal doing their best as ladkiwale; payal's saas for once forgiving and loving. is there any way our payal can be persuaded to stay on? even akash got into his character.
"don't let a thief into your house three times. the first time was enough. the second time was a chance. the third time means you're stupid."
~~~ joy c joybell ~~~

and while surprisiya was promising happiness in the sitting room, saazish was planning destruction in the bedroom. khushi was right about that, asr was right to look grimly at her allegations of "saazish!" it is indeed underway. but will it succeed?

a suspicion arousing snapshot lies on a table. will it do its job or disappear into the black hole like the soap with the key imprint? dadi sits gloating with maliciousness guarding her prey. shyam's dialogue writers and his acting both slip. actually, once he has no connection to the past, how to resurrect his present. but today i am not going to worry about all that.

he's in black (or was it dark brown, no matter, hot in either). he's said, "relax," yelled "kahan!" ( i know i'll never feel the same way again about that word too 😕), and see how gorgeous he looks as he smiles in the freeze frame.

do i really care about the plot today? as i said, only those things hanging from khushi's ears...

"persons attempting to find a motive in this narrative will be prosecuted; persons attempting to find a moral in it will be banished; persons attempting to find a plot in it will be shot."
~~~ mark twain, the adventures of huckleberry finn ~~~
