Photo Credit: Eros Entertainment 8 November 2007 (Sawf News) - Om Shanti Om made history in London last night, becoming the first Hindi film to premiere at the historic Empire Theater in Leicester Square. Deepika Padukone, Arjun Rampal and Shreyas Talpade joined Shah Rukh Khan on the red carpet for the dazzling premiere, which drew thousands of cheering fans. SRK told London reporters that he hoped this grand entrance would attract new western viewers to Bollywood. Shah Rukh said, "It's a beginning. Every new film helps us to mount the steps." He must have been talking about America, because Bollywood is already pretty high up the UK ladder, with Hindi movies regularly appearing the top ten nationwide. The early reports from the United States are good. Variety reviewed the movie and gave it a rave review, calling it an "Om Run." Still, will the non-NRI American audience stay in their seats for all the Bollywood history in-jokes in the film? Shah Rukh hit a sour note at a lunchtime press conference when he indirectly dissed his Diwali competition, Saawariya. "Competition is about believing there is something bigger and better out there," he said. "But I honestly believe there is no bigger or better film out there at the moment -- so in my opinion, there is no competition." The multitude of A-list stars who attended Wednesday's premiere for Saawariya would beg to differ. In contrast to SRK's cocky putdown, they generously praised both films. Shah Rukh may win the box office, but Bhansali's crowd wins for class. |
