Shahrukh was well known firstly before he even entered the film industry. Anyone who is aware of Fauji would know how popular the dude was. His co-stars who worked with him on Circus and Fauji have attested to the fact that people in thousands used to come to the set to watch him. This notion that he was just a "cultural phenomenon" is hilarious on pretty much every level as this is someone who first tasted success through television. As far as I know television in India is something that is still accessible to more people as compared to films. People in rural areas still gather and watch films on telly. Films like RBGJ , Darr , Anjaam , Baazigar can from no angle be referred to as films that were aimed for the urban audience. On top of that he was playing an anti hero in most of them. The fact that he is accepted in those movies as well as a Swades or Dil Se or DTPH shows his universal acceptability amongst all strata of society, As for stats , please by all means do come out with stats from that period of time and let us know about the footfalls , the economic background of people who came to watch his movies.

To say Shahrukh is not popular in interiors is amusing to say the least. The guy is not just popular in interiors but he is even popular in regions where hindi films aren't all that popular in India. The BO collection of his movies in those regions speaks volumes about his universal appeal. And since one is so eager to impart education here , one should also how people from interiors have always migrated to big cities to look for job opportunities. How do you know the ones who are migrating from the interiors to the cities out there aren't watching Shahrukh's movies? Is there any data out there for that as well?
