I was also thinking y would the awasthis get married their son to a poor gal???The mom luks greedy n definately she will look out for a gal who gets dowry,money...So was dhasni actually rich?? there must be something wrong with their son (may be like u said that day) so they must have married him to a poor girl who can be exploited... they must have taken full charge of marriage functions also so thats y her haldi was grand...
