Happy Birthday Aamir Khan

CHAPTER ONE
There were children running around the house having fun and enjoying given it was one of the rarities of the year that Mr. Raman K Bhalla opened his house to others. This always only happened twice a year, on his children's birthdays. They would invite all their friends from school to come and celebrate with them while they partied and enjoyed each other's company
He was not such a social guy, in fact the only time he would be seen socializing was when it involved his children. They were his life and they meant everything to him especially at a time like this.
He wasn't always this way, he was a fun loving guy and somewhat goofy until years ago when a tragedy happened that led him to be that way. His wife Shagun was his purpose for living. He depended on her for everything and life was so full of love and happiness.
He met her in college and he knew he wanted to spend the rest of his life with her. She was so out of his league and yet she for some reason found him worthy enough to say yes, when he asked her to marry him. They had an amazing seven years of marriage having two children along the way. Ruhi was only 1 year old and Aditya was 4 when that unfortunate night happened.
They had gone out for a picnic like they always did each time during the summers. It was a family outing and everyone was there his parents, brother and sisters. Shagun's family was leaving abroad and so she never really got to see them as much as she wanted so the Bhallas always endeavored to ensure that she never really missed them as much by making her apart of their family, not just a daughter in law or sister in law but a daughter and a sister to them.
The would spent an entire weekend in a hotel leaving Friday nights and returning Sunday afternoons and this day was no different. It was a splendid weekend in fact perfect and they all were preparing to leave the hotel and go back home. When they got to the parking lot, Shagun remembered she had forgotten Ruhi's bag and pacifier in the hotel room and so she asked that they waited for her and that she wouldn't be long.
He remembered it like it was yesterday. His wife turned to him and kissed him smiling as she told him she wasn't going to take too long and they wouldn't be late. She walked into the doors of that hotel as Raman and his brother drove the two cars out of the drive way and parked outside waiting for Shagun. They waited for about ten minutes when suddenly
'BOOM...BOOM''
The police said it was a freakish accident that happened because of a gas leak. Everything on that floor was literally burned to the ground that they couldn't even recognize anything let alone her. In just a split second he lost everything he knew and cared about. He had lost his best friend, his wife, his life and his children, they lost their mother.
He buried himself in his work, it is the only way he knew how to cope and they only way he kept his mind off of her. If it wasn't that, there was the occasional drinking he did, especially on the anniversary of her death. That was the only coping mechanism he knew.
He did all he could do giving his children the best but he quickly learnt that he wasn't doing enough. He didn't want his family their because they always wanted to see how he was doing or expected him to talk about his feelings and he wasn't in the mood for any of that.
So he left Mumbai with his siblings and shifted to Delhi with his children with the hope of starting a new
'Papa... Papa ...'' Called a now 7 year old Ruhi
'Haan... Yes beta...'' Said Raman coming back from his flash backs
'Are you alright...'' She asked sweetly
'Yes... Why...'' Said Raman
'Then why are you crying...'' Said Ruhi as she came forward and wiped the tears that had streamed down his face
'Oh...'' He said surprised that he had been crying
'I am just so happy that my baby girl turned 7 today...'' He lied
'Oh ho papa... You do not have to cry... Birthdays are meant to bring joy...'' Said Ruhi
'Of course... Sorry... No more...'' Said Raman as he pulled her in
'Here come on... We are going to cut cake...'' Said Ruhi as she pulled him to where her friends were
'Simmi auntie... We are ready...'' Said Ruhi as her auntie walked in with a cake
'Ruhi... ' Said Simmi
'Sorry... Simmi Didi ...'' Said Ruhi giggling
'That is more like it...'' Said Simmi placing the cake on the table
Everyone started singing happy birthday to her as she smiled still holding her father's hand in hers. She closed her eyes for a few seconds, almost as if she was saying a prayer, turned and looked at her father before she finally blew her candles out. They cut the cake and she shared it with everyone feeding her father first before going around the room.
'Ruhi...'' A now 10 year old Aditya called her
'Haan...'' She answered
'Here... I wanted to give you this... Happy Birthday'' He said
'Thank you... What is it...'' She asked
'Well... Why don't you open it and see...'' Said Aditya
Ruhi excited opened the gift and it was this beautiful simple pendent with a locket shaped in a heart. Aditya took it from her opening it as he said
'I put a picture of mom in it... See...''
'Oh yeah... Thank you...'' Said Ruhi
'Here... That way, you will always have her near you...'' He added as he helped her put it on
'Thanks Adi...'' She said as she hugged her brother
Raman watched this and didn't have it in him to witness whatever was happening. It wasn't a bad thing, in fact it was remarkable how his son had managed to cope with his mother's death given how little he was but it didn't mean it didn't break his heart to watch his children get sad for every holiday or occasion where their mother wasn't in it.
Like always, he stood up excused himself and walked away leaving behind two very sad children who misunderstood him doing that as a way of him telling them talking about her was a no, no in that house. Ruhi turned and she could see her brother was beginning to get sad and she didn't like that
'It is okay Adi... I loved it...'' She said sweetly as she hugged her brother
Simmi watched them comfort each other and she smiled thanking God that they shared bond so strong that it could get them through a lot. Raman was horrible at dealing with his own emotions let alone handling those of others. What disappointed her the most was that in this scenario these were his kids and he needed to treat them a bit better, a bit different. She walked to his study where he always went when he wanted to be alone because she needed to talk to him
'Raman...'' She called him as she walked in
'Not today Simmi...'' He snapped
'You can snap at me all you want but that in there was not okay...'' Said Simmi
'Simmi please... spare me your lecture'' Said Raman grabbing a glass of scotch
'Okay... Listen... I am leaving as you know. I have some business to handle in London and therefore I won't be available for a couple of months. You need help with the kids...'' She said giving up knowing this conversation never really went anywhere
'I can take care of them myself...'' Said Raman
'Dude... The last time I left you alone with them, you took Ruhi to Aditya's school and Aditya to Ruhi's then made it seem like it was the school administration's fault...'' Said Simmi
'No I didn't... ' Said Raman defensively
'Raman... You threatened to sue them...'' Said Simmi amused
'Whatever it is their fault that the schools have similar names'' Said Raman
'Really that is your excuse...'' Said Simmi shaking her head as she said
'Listen, I have set up a few interviews for you. They are tomorrow morning... Be their''
'I have work at the office so...'' He began making excuses
'That is why I set the interviews up at your office'' Said Simmi
'The kids do not even like nannies. The last one we hired left in tears given what Aditya did to the poor woman'' Said Raman
'All I hear are excuses... Nothing concrete ...'' Said Simmi
'And there is that small matter'' He said
'Which is...'' Said Simmi
'I do not like strangers around or in my house'' Said Raman
'That is why she will only be here every morning at 7:00 am make sure the kids are prepared for school and leave at 5:00pm when you will be back from work. Besides you need someone around here while you're away. They will handle the house and meals as well as the kids'' Said Simmi looking at her brother as she took the glass away
'Ohh you really thought this through...'' He said
'Yes I did...'' She said putting the alcohol away
'Now you are taking my alcohol too seriously'' Said Raman
'Yeah... Because your kids party is still going on down stairs remember'' Said Simmi much to Raman's irritation
He walked back downstairs where Ruhi was still receiving gifts from her friends as well as enjoying cake at the same time. He looked around and he could see his son was seated aside watching all that was going on. He walked to where Aditya was saying
'Hey...Why don't you join in...''
'It isn't my birthday party, besides I could ask you the same question...'' He said still looking at his sister
'Hey... Do not snap at me...'' Said Raman but Aditya just kept quiet
'Anyway, that was a nice gift you gave to your sister...'' Said Raman
'Really... I could have sworn you hated it'' Said Aditya as he got up saying
'I have some stuff to do in the kitchen...'' And he walked away
This kind of behavior between these two was very common and as much as Raman hated it, he didn't know how to get back from it given how far it had gotten. Aditya was his son, his only son and even though he was learning quite late, he knew his son needed to have a relationship with him as much as he needed it with his son.
He looked at his daughter and smiled a bit before he followed his son to the kitchen hoping to try and figure out what the hell was going on with him
'Adi... Aditya ...'' He called causing Aditya to stand and turn looking at him
'Hold on... Talk to me what is going on ...'' Said Raman
'Nothing, I am just getting a glass of water...'' He said as he turned walking
'Hold on... What is wrong with you'' Said Raman getting irritated
'Dad, please, let us stop pretending. The reason you are here is because you're upset because of the gift I gave to Ruhi... Isn't it...'' Said Aditya
'Wait... What...'' Said Raman taken back
'Listen dad, she was my mother and I just wanted something for Ruhi that will remind her of that. I didn't mean to offend anyone...'' He said but in a way that was not apologetic at all
'I never said...'' Raman began but Simmi walked in
'Aditya... Ruhi is calling you...'' She said
'Excuse me...'' He said politely and walked out
Raman watched his son leave and felt bad seeing as how their relationship had gotten. It broke his heart because in a way it was him failing to be a good father to him and also failing his children. He didn't blame him at all; in fact he blamed himself more for not being able to be there for his kids when they needed him
Simmi walked over to where he was tapping his shoulder as she said
'You don't give up. You push and push until he lets his guard down...''
'I know...'' Said Raman signing

CHAPTER TWO
'Ishu... Ishu come on hurry...'' Said Mihika as Ishita ran upstairs in the apartment building she was staying at
'I am coming, I am coming...'' Said Ishita making it to the door
'See, I told you she will get here...'' Said Mihika
'I don't care whether she gets here. She had better have my money that is all I want...'' Said the Landlord
'I have it, here you go...'' Said Ishita handing him an envelope
'How many months are you clearing...'' Said the Landlord
'3 Months...'' Said Ishita
'What about the remaining 2...'' He asked
'I will get you your money, I swear just... Please Sir...'' Said Ishita
'Ishu, you know I like you but I also answer to someone. I am only superintendent and I answer to someone as well... You gotta help me to help you...'' He said
'I know... And I will make it work I swear...'' Said Ishita humbly
'You need to come up with that money in 4 days otherwise I am going to have to evacuate you'' Said the Landlord
'I understand and I will get you all of it, I promise...'' Said Ishita
'Don't promise just find a way...'' Said the landlord as he walked out
'Phew that was close...'' Said Mihika
'Tell me about it...'' Said Ishita
'How did you even manage to come up with that money? My own couldn't cover two months let alone four...'' Said Mihika
'I found a way don't worry...'' Said Ishita as she closed the door
'What does that mean?'' Said Mihika but Ishita kept quiet
'Ishu...'' She called her again
'I sold my jewelry... It is fine, it is not like I wear it anyway'' Said Ishita
'Wha... How ... Oh My God, Ishu...'' Said Mihika
'It is okay, you need to stop freaking out...'' Said Ishita
'I ... You... I ...'' Said Mihika at a loss of words
'Really, Mimi it is okay...'' Said Ishita
'How about the remaining two months, what do we do...'' Mihika said
'I do not know, we will figure it out...'' Said Ishita
'Ishu, I think you need to call your father and tell him...'' Said Mihika but Ishita interrupted
'I said I will figure it out and I will... I am not calling him...'' Said Ishita adamant
'Ishu, come on let us be realistic...You do not have a job you got laid off two months ago. You can barely take care of yourself let alone handling this apartment...'' Said Mihika
'You do not need to worry about me I will be fine... Always have been and I will find a way'' Said Ishita
'My God you are so stubborn... Please all I am saying is see reason. Listen...'' Mihika began but Ishita walked away to her room
'I am not listening to what you are saying. I will be fine... You are leaving anyway so I do not get what the big deal is...'' Said Ishita
Mihika knew arguing with her was going to be a waste of time given everything that had happened. Even Ishita's own family figured that maybe she was just going through a phase and that she would come to her senses and come back home but that was over 7 years ago.
Ishita hadn't seen or talked to anyone in her family and she made it a point to avoid being even related to it. Every time someone made the connection, she would move and that is how they had been for 7 years. But now they were all grown up. Ishita was 22 and Mihika was 24, she was done with school and had gotten a job in a Bank except the problem that she was moving. She was moving on, growing up and Ishita just seemed like she was just stuck
'Ishu listen, I do not want to upset you, you know that but I worry. I am moving back to Mumbai in 2 days. I am worried of what will happen to you once I am gone... Who is going to take care of you? Why not just come home with me, I swear you will not even see your family if you do not want to...'' Said Mihika
'I know your just worried but I can handle it Mimi I promise. I even have another job interview tomorrow...'' Said Ishita joyfully
'Oh yeah, as a programmer again...'' Said Mihika
'No, As a...'' Said Ishita holding her breath as she said
'I do not want to jinx it so I will tell you if I get it''
'Are you sure...'' Said Mihika
'Yes... Now stop worrying mama, where is lunch...'' Said Ishita smiling
'I am not you mother...'' Said Mihika
'Well sometimes you act like it...'' Said Ishita chuckling as she sat down waiting for Mihika to serve her
'Besides Priya will be back soon and I won't be alone...'' Said Ishita smiling causing Mihika to shake her head
'Yeah that just increases my worry...'' Said Mihika
*********************************************************************
'Please Sir, hurry up I am begging you...'' Said Ishita
She woke up late and she knew if she missed this interview then she was going to be done for. When she began working with her mother at 14 years never in her life did she imagine that she would end up here at 22 years old, rushing to a job interview as a nanny broke as hell. Life wasn't as she had planned but when you're given lemons...
'Madam, don't worry we are here...'' Said the auto driver
Ishita got out and began running her hand through her very disorganized bag and she tried to find change to pay off the man. She thanked him for getting him there and turned around a bit taken back
'Wait... wait...'' She called the auto
'What is it...'' Said the auto driver
'Are you sure this is the place...'' She asked
'Of course, everyone in Delhi knows this address...'' Said the driver
'Ohhh... Okay... Thank you...'' She said
'Well good luck madam...'' Said the auto driver driving off
Ishita took a deep breath before turning and walking into the RKB Fashions nervous as hell. She had heard about him when she applied for the job and she had also heard that he was not easy to work with. But she couldn't choose who her boss could be, she was supposed to just find a job and make money that was her priority
'Excuse me Madam...'' She said to the receptionist
'Yeah...'' Said the lady her eyes still on the computer
'Uhhh, I came here to see Ms. Simmi Bhalla...'' Said Ishita
'She had gone out...'' The lady said again her eyes still on the computer
'That is fine, I was supposed to have an interview with Mrs. Raman K Bhalla...'' Said Ishita
The lady stopped typing taking off her glasses as she turned looking at Ishita. She stared down at Ishita looking at her from head to toe before she said
'Move... Stand over their...'' Almost as if she was disgusted and Ishita obliged
'So you were saying...'' Said the Lady
'I have an interview with Mr. Raman K Bhalla...'' Ishita replied
'What time was your interview supposed to be...'' The lady asked
'Uhhh 9:00 Am... But ...'' Ishita began but the lady interrupted
'Does it look like it is 9:00 am to you...'' The lady said
'No... I was...'' Said Ishita but got interrupted
'Answer my question...'' The lady said
'No madam...'' Ishita said
'What time is it...'' Said the Lady
'9; 15 am, Madam...'' Said Ishita
'Alright then, see you some other time... Mr. Raman K Bhalla is a very busy man and has no time for irresponsible time wasting middle class people like you...'' The lady said
'Please...'' Said Ishita begged
''Leave before I call security...'' Said the lady turning to her computer
Ishita disheartened looked at the lady who was now acting like Ishita didn't exist and felt like her world was coming to an end. This was all she had at such short notice or she was going to be evicted in 4 days. Where the hell was she supposed to go if that happened? She got to the door and turned around looking at the lady who was now talking on the telephone and decided she wasn't leaving until she got that interview.
She snuck into the lounge area where the clients would wait and sat there. She didn't even how Raman K Bhalla looked like but she wasn't leaving without talking to him. If it meant they dragged her out of that place so be it but she wasn't going anywhere until she convinced him that she was the right person for that job.
She sat down and waited and waited and a few minutes had slowly turned into hours. She kept on scouring around trying to gauge if every man in a suit she saw was actually the one she was looking for but she was failing. The places seemed quite like there were no people around but she had quickly leant from the tea lady that there was a staff meeting and so most of them were in attendance that is why the place seemed so quiet. She was desperate and so decided to wait although no one told her that meeting was going to last this long.
After about 6hours of waiting, she was exhausted and hungry and almost gave up when suddenly there were people coming down from elevators each carrying either a laptop or a file of some sort. She looked around and saw the man everyone seemed to be following and figured he was important enough therefore he would lead her to whom so ever she wanted to see
'Excuse me Sir...'' She said causing the man to turn
'Hey...'' She said causing the man to frown a bit almost as if he was surprised at her pleasantries
'Oh sorry...'' Said Ishita fidgeting realizing she was being too formal
'Good afternoon Sir...'' she said
He looked at her for a couple of seconds as if he was accessing her before he answered
'Good afternoon to you... How many I help you ...'' He said
'Right, I am sorry... I do not need to be so forward but I am looking for Mr. Raman K Bhalla... Could you happen to know him...? '' She said
The girl who was standing with the gentleman looked at Ishita shocked her jaw almost dropping to the ground.
'You do not know RKB...'' she said
'NO... Are you him Sir, Sorry...'' Said Ishita nervously
'No I am not...'' He said again looking at her curiously
'Who the hell doesn't know RKB. Have you been leaving in a cave...'' The woman said
'Rinky manners...'' He said turning to Ishita
'No I am not him but I am his brother, Romi...'' He said extending his hand with a warm smile on his face
'Oh hello Sir...'' She said folding her hands not taking Romi's and he didn't take offence but just smirked
'So is he around...'' She asked
'Well he is in but you may not be able to see him as he is in for another meeting...'' Said Romi
'It is okay, I can wait...'' Said Ishita much to Romi's curiosity
'Am sorry if you do not mind my asking, Why do you want to see him'' Said Romi
'Well Sir, I...'' She began
'Romi, Everyone calls me Romi...'' He interrupted
'Right, Romi... I was supposed to have an interview with him but I got here late and the lady at the reception wouldn't allow me see him so I snuck in here and waited. I would have been here early but traffic was a bitch and someone needed my help so I sort of got here late...'' Said Ishita disregarding her language but for whatever reason Romi's curiosity just kept on increasing
