'My self-esteem has been low'

Kareena Kapoor in a candid interview about matters close to her heart — Shahid, Saif and Jab We Met

It hasn't been an easy time for Kareena. Her long-term relationship has ended. She chose to 'out' her new man Saif Ali Khan, a week before the release of Jab We Met, but now post-release, the clouds seem to be clearing. In a candid interview, Kareena comes clean on subjects close to her heart.

Like Geet from Jab We Met, are you your favourite?
No! I don't want people to believe that. Of late, my self-esteem has been very low — so much pressure from all sides.

How did you cope?My mom, father and sister have been pillars of strength. They've always said they're with me in whatever I do. They trust me implicitly. Without them, I would've collapsed during this trying time. Of course, it has been a stressful period! But I didn't want to go around talking about it.

Why didn't you clear your stance when you were being portrayed as the villain of the break-up?Why should I drag my very private life into the public? People close to me know the truth. Sometimes, things don't work out between two people.
How do you look back at your days with Shahid? With affection, happiness and pleasure. I don't regret anything. There is absolutely no bitterness in me. I'm a positive person. And it shows in my performance. I'm very happy, yaar!

Have you re-converted to non-vegetarianism after Shahid's departure?Please! I hate meat. I don't even touch eggs. I hate people who kill animals. Nothing in the world would make me non-vegetarian.

It was Shahid who turned you into a vegetarian?Yes. But now I believe in it. And why would I give up something good?

Your performance in Jab We Met has been praised.I'm smiling. I'm happy. I had a gut feeling my new film would work. People are saying it's going to be the most special film of mine so far. This is a new beginning for me. I've just begun to realise my potential. When director Imtiaz Ali narrated the film, I could sense the special quality in the character. Geet was the soul of the film.
