Unres...😊

Another amazing chapter...(as usual)👍🏼

Vedant is so upset... I think I am seeing (reading😆) him this much angry for the first time...Poor fellow was already handling lots of political pressure and now this!!

That's the interesting part of a great leader IMPOV. The pressure they can handle yet keep the team together.

The scene is well described, I can picturise it in front of me...I loved how Vedant scolded Vikram, even though Vikram was full of regret. BTW, Vikram needed a little scolding, he always keeps losing his temper😆...But I am really worried what will happen to the case..😕.

Case would be serious. Let's see. But what Vikram did was right and wrong. His intention was good but his method was very wrong.

I loved Vedant's reply to Vikram's "You'll go home and sleep peacefully and begin your day comfortably as any other day.."... He is so clear about his next steps even in this situation... The team is so confident about him...👏

I feel he is asking the team to release pictures of Rajesh because Rajesh may try to flee after hearing that Tejesh is under police custody... I just hope the Commissioner listens to Vedant and lets him handle the case...

Shulya and her child are Lohan's sister and nephew...and they are Rajesh's family😲!! not Samar's... This was a shocker too..😲 Amar and Samar seem to have a beautiful bond. It is tough to imagine a life like Shulya, she must have faced a lot...Poor Samar, he did so much to protect Shulya and her kid, even going to jail for a crime he never committed...and she misunderstands him and cringes in his presence... She would feel very guilty and regretful when she knows the truth😭...

I don't know if she regrets the truth...or if it's actually the truth 😉

So, Samar, Tejesh and Rajesh worked for the Jeetenge Hum Party. This surely points towards the Chandra's.

Lawyer😲!!...OMG, Shulya too is a tough nut to crack.. Nice choice Samar..😉😆.

Yamini Sharma makes a comeback too.🥳..I feel it will be Rajesh's number...

The chapter was well written and really a treat to read... I am loving how you are slowly wrapping up and connecting the dots...👏

Off to read the next😉

Thanks again for your detailed comment.

Amazing update Shweta... 😊

Thank you...😊

The first scene is written so beautifully describing Vedant's state of mind👏. I could relate the darkness to the actual darkness of the night, to the case's future after what Vikram did and to the un-nabbed criminal...Poor Vikram, he too is living in uncertainty... his entire career is at stake...The last of investigation has finally arrived..*sigh*.

These fellow share such an amazing bond👍🏼. They are ready to forgive their friend and give him another chance. Vikram had been feeling so guilty and disgusted at himself. His team will surely make him feel better. I loved how Vedant was teasing Vikram pretending not to see him as well as supporting him by being at his side, just like a true mentor and boss, guiding at the right places.

Dr. Shakti arrives... lion and his lioness.😆.. Now the team has gets a mother figure after having only father for a long time... Hope the 25 year old problem too gets sorted along with the case..😳.

Mother and father 😆

Sagar obsession for being Senior😆...

Sagar is a very special character of mine...😆

I enjoy thoroughly reading the team chatting among themselves, even if it may not be anything about the case... Their bond among themselves is so awesome..😊.

Thank Goodness *sigh*, at least they are not snatching away this case from the team... But I bet it is only happening because Vedant may have convinced the Commissioner in his favour.😉..

I think it would be too repetitive to show Vedant talking to Commissioner and convincing him. He has the ability and we all know that. Felt it would be better to let it be understood.

Someone fired first from the outside!!😲 So, was it planned to make it all go in the wrong direction? So that the team is not able to investigate further...? But the operation was secret between Nizam and Vikram, who may have informed them?...Or were they prepared this way beforehand to have control over any situation?... Very shrewd of the criminals...

So there is someone who knows what's happening all the time. Someone didn't want Tejesh to talk probably.

I still feel the unkown mastermind' is among the Chandra🤔... Tejesh and Rajesh are probably his accomplice and Rajesh is making Samar suffer by blackmailing him because Samar has dared to look at Rajesh's girl (wife). Though Rajesh has no feeling for her, he may feel she is his 'property', typical of how such guys feel...😆

Yeah!🥳 The team has got their bald man... Michael...

Even though Rajesh was not present in the accident site, as Vincent didn't see him there, he may have been present at the murder site...I think Veerkaran's phone in Tejesh's room puts Tejesh in the suspect radar officially. Of course, Vincent's statement is also there, this will just support it. The deleted messages in Veerkaran's phone can be recovered from the SIM card...

I guess the Rajesh mystery is solved...😆

Woolen fibers found again... Akhilesh Chandra is coming in...

Though I hope Mina is not involved in any way, but she may be blackmailed or tricked by the criminals to puncture the tyre of her husband's car...or she did so because was going to visit Samar's mother... so that they get the desired result of Veerkaran in his bike.😕.. Hariprasad may also be suspected... Though, I hope Veerkaran wasn't visiting Samar's ailing mother that night... BTW, do the officers know where to find her?

Very interesting theory about Mina. Where to find whom?

"Aren't you going to give us a motivation speech? 24 hours is what we have...something like that?" asked Sagar amused. Vedant shook his head with a smile. "Don't waste time. Get on with your work."

I am amused at this exchange of dialogue😆... they are an awesome team.😉..

Keeping fingers crossed...Eagerly looking forward to the next update.😳..

PS - OMG, you already updated when I was in the middle of writing the comment for ch-21...(I was writing on word file reading simultaneously, and now posting all of it together😆)... Thank you so much.😊..Off to read next..😉.

The following from two different comments, followed by my reply.😊.. I am not quoting them because they are too long...
I don't know if she (Shulya) regrets the truth...or if it's actually the truth😉

Your story is very intriguing... I can't deduce the truth before you actually reveal it 😆

(about Rajesh being present at the murder site) I guess the Rajesh mystery is solved...😆

Well, I had written the comment before reading the Rajesh is dead... But in spite of his being dead, we don't know if he died before or after the crime took place...

Thank you Shweta for replying to each of my comment.😊.. You can reply to the last one anytime you want..😉..

Update soon😆

Another awesome chapter👏

I loved how Vedant handled the media👍🏼; Vikram couldn't have done it this way... One needs to be very patient...The media can be very bratty at times😆...

I think a leader must be able to absorb pressure and keep the team together without the pressure affecting them. I think Vedant is one of that kind.

Finally Samar breaks... Vedant rocks🥳!! Love his attitude, one smile and the inmate breaks down and tells the truth😆...

However unfortunate the circumstances were, but the arrest of Tejesh also turned out to be an asset in breaking Samar... I am really looking forward to Tejesh's interrogation😳, and what he tells the police. Also, what happens when Akhilesh Chandra is brought in..

Tejesh in custody is one of the prime reasons for Samar breaking.

So, they have been going in the right path of investigation Samar's statements confirmed their deductions they had made... Vedant has promised him to protect his family, but how will he actually do it? Is he still keeping a watch on them? Though on the other hand, I believe the criminals will get trapped in their own pit if they try to harm them because it will confirm the blackmail trap they created for Samar and will force them to come under police custody..🤔.

Vedant will protect the family by not letting their names go out to the media. The family is already in surveillance. So no one can attack them now.

If Samar sample was taken in the prison, is it possible that even some police officers are involved in the cover up process?😲

Politics+Business+Police...all are interconnected.

So, my guess was right about Shulya too, on why Rajesh wanted Samar to suffer. I am imagining how Shulya would react on knowing the truth.

The mastermind is still out of reach... I hope the media doesn't come to know that the charges on Samar has been dropped.

Mastermind options list is getting shorter. They will narrow it down quickly.

It turned out to be a well planned murder. The mastermind is a cold blooded murderer, very influential and lots of connections. The grudge against Veerkaran, I assume is regarding the rape case...

It's something really very personal.

Someone from his army days is also involved? He may very well live near Veerkaran's house in that case...

Ritu seemed very friendly and cooperative in the starting, but when Charith told her about H.P. visiting mother the conversation started to take another turn. Could she be Samar's ailing mother😲? Why did she shout when he asked if her brother was home on the night of the murder? He had asked the same question to her also. I think either she was hiding something like Mina or was fearing that her brother may land in some kind of trouble due to something.

May be she doesn't know what her brother is upto😕, because he lied about his trip... Though, I can't connect Hariprasad to Chandras...i.e. why an ex-serviceman of Army will work for a political leader? (if that is possible, in this case)

Ritu had no clue why her brother lied and she ddidn't want to tell something that might land him into problem. She had no obligation to answer Charith's question and hence dismissed him.

Loved Charith's characterization and nervousness in this scene.👍🏼.. much like Charith.😆..

Rajesh Lala is dead!!😲 Raj Kapoor cremated our Mukesh Ambani.😆.. OMG... Ruby's deductions were right. Excellent job!👏... But why does Shulya doesn't want to answer about Tejesh? Is Tejesh a threat to her?May be Samar doesn't know yet about his brother's death. Or he would have mentioned about it. I think the same people that are involved in murdering Veerkaran, murdered Rajesh.

Next chapter will answer them.

But if Shulya knew about his death and Samar visited her, it is likely that Samar knew too...😕

This is turning out to be very intriguing. Eagerly looking forward to the next update.😊

Chapter 23

"Are we getting Rajesh's case also?" asked Agastya.

"We have to. He is directly connected to our case," said Ruby.

Vedant shook his head. "No. I have requested the Commissioner not to send the case to us. We have our hands full and we don't have time for a new case."

"But Sir. Rajesh's murder could be a part of a cover up. If we find who is behind that, we can find our killer," reasoned Ruby.

Vedant sighed. "We don't have Rajesh's body for a post-mortem as our dear Raj Kapoor cremated him. On what basis would you begin your enquiry? Where will you start? We have to track down Rajesh's last known whereabouts which we have already done and it led us nowhere. We have no potential lead to take the case forward. In turn, if we concentrate on what we already have, probably we might end up solving Rajesh's murder also."

Silence filled the squad room, a silence which jumped in edginess, a dangerous silence. The deadline tightening around the team was driving them to erect senseless theories and make erratic decisions. They were faced with new murders instead of new evidence. Frustration which was deliberately and strongly locked and kept barred from the squad room, was slowly seeping its way inside. Vedant could feel the frustration himself and he knew he couldn't bound to get vexed. His team watched every movement of his and many a times followed him blindly with complete confidence.

"Guys! Let's not get carried away by our agitated craving for a major breakthrough. Now is the critical time where we should keep our cool and focus on the right leads- base our theories on solid evidence and psychology," Vedant said looking at Ruby. "Let's not let our personal emotions overcome this case and force us to make grave errors, errors which can't be rectified. I don't want to sound like a motivational speaker or Am I an expert in it. I just want my team...MY team to remain sane and swim across this mad case successfully. I don't want another drowning."

The team knew their boss was indicating the fate of Vikram's career.

"Take Rajesh's murder off your mind. Focus on what we can use for our case and what we can actually use is only the evidence provided by Raj Kapoor, the cremator," said Vedant. "Curious person- I must say. Anyway. His account is- a man brought Rajesh in a van and asked him to cremate him. Raj Kapoor has principles in his profession. He demanded a death certificate for the deceased. The man failed to produce one and hence Raj Kapoor refused to cremate Rajesh. But- Mr Kapoor's principles aren't as strong as it has to be. Greed won. The man offered to pay him four times the usual price. Raj Kapoor took the money and cremated the body, with no idea that the man he was burning to ashes was a- or was going to be the most wanted man for the police in a murder investigation."

"So who was the man who offered him the money?" asked Ruby.

"I showed him all the pictures of the people involved in our case," replied Vedant.

"And?"

"He recognised...none."

"Oh Come On!" Ruby sighed with desperation. "So we are left no where again?"

"Now now Dr. Ruby," laughed Vedant. "This is why I said keep your cool. React after I complete my account entirely."

Ruby looked embarrassed. "So there is some good news?"

"Raj Kapoor didn't recognise the man who brought Rajesh for cremation. But he "kind off" recognised the driver of the van," paused Vedant. "He pointed at Tejesh to be the driver. He said he is 75% sure."

"75% sure? How did he even calculate that percentage?" snorted Agastya.

"He is just saving himself in case he is wrong," said Vedant. "Now- Does Lohan has any website for his travel agency? I mean...Is he just an agent or does he have his own transit vehicles?"

"No!" exclaimed Ruby understanding the underlying meaning in the question.

Agastya swiftly tapped his keyboard to open the website Lohan had for his business. "Oh yes. He has few vehicles running for family tours."

"Pictures?" asked Vedant.

"No. The vehicles could well be outsourced though. He could project as he owns the vehicles, but it needn't be his," replied Agastya. "Why don't you tell it out?"

"Raj Kapoor said the van that brought Rajesh's body had the name of the travels written on the windscreen. 'Lohan Travels'. What does that say?"

"Lohan knew Rajesh was dead. He lent his van to put a complete end to his brother-in-law. And I am sure he wasn't going to keep this happy news from his sister, would he?" asked Ruby with a proud smile.

"Correct! It seems you were right all the way. Shulya knew Rajesh was dead and that was why she was relieved- more relieved that she should have been. Now the new detail which has popped up is- Tejesh. Tejesh was part of Rajesh's death. But Samar said Tejesh and Rajesh were really close. Why did he kill Rajesh then or played a part in the murder?"

"Can we be sure that it was a murder?" asked Agastya. "What if Rajesh died of some natural cause or an accident and Tejesh was cremating him out of love and respect."

"But why not do it openly? Why wasn't Rajesh's death out? And...if Lohan and Shulya knew Rajesh was no more, why didn't they tell us? That's not normal behaviour," said Vedant. "Am I right?" he asked Ruby.

"Yes. Absolutely. Rajesh's murder or say- death- the cause was being cremated along with the body. The circumstance is definitely suspicious. Another point to note is the man who actually brought in the body. Who was he? Could he be our mastermind again?"

"Sir! Are you sure we shouldn't lay our eyes on Rajesh's murder case? I mean...Tejesh is involved. Lohan is involved and probably our mastermind too. What if solving this murder is easier?" suggested Agastya.

Vedant sat thoughtfully. "I understand Agastya. We have most of our suspects involved in Rajesh's death and probably they murdered Rajesh too. But we still have no ID on our mastermind. And even if we get one, how are we possibly going to connect it with Veerkaran's case?"

"Was Raj Kapoor able to give a description for the man who brought in the body?" asked Ruby.

"He is with the sketch artist now. But he admitted, he was drunk and couldn't remember the face properly. He said the man was in a complete black dress- black shirt, pant and a jacket. He said the jacket was shining," laughed Vedant. "He didn't get any signature of any kind on any paper at the completion of the job. And yes...This happened 2 weeks ago- well before Veerkaran's murder."

"Hmmm," said Ruby looking at all the scattered pieces mentally. "What did this guy actually say to Raj Kapoor. What was his attitude, tone, voice, body language? Something- which can help us profile our mastermind a bit more. For now, we know the guy is a meticulous planner, doesn't shy away from killing anyone- be it his own comrades in crime, doesn't leave behind any evidence, stays in the shadow but still stays on the crime scene," explained Ruby.

"Wears a shining jacket," added Agastya. "May be it was a leather jacket and that's what our hero Raj Kapoor meant by shining."

"Ruby, do one thing. Raj Kapoor is downstairs. Take the statement from him and clarify all the questions you have with regard to our mastermind. Try to profile him. The accent he used...I think I needn't explain more."

Ruby left the room immediately without a question. She was replaced the next moment with Charith's entry. He went directly to the board and wrote the name of Hariprasad under the heading of suspects.

"Great! The next show is on," said Vedant light-heartedly as he took his favourite seat. He knew he was forcing the light-heartedness but he couldn't afford the team to become serious and pressurized. "So what happened to put our bike-lender under the radar of our genius boy?"

"Hariprasad wasn't at home but his sister Ritu was. She got very nervous when I asked about Hariprasad's whereabouts on the night of the murder," answered Charith.

"So Hariprasad wasn't at home?" asked Vedant. "He doesn't have an alibi?"

"I don't know. Ritu refused to answer. Hariprasad also lied to me about him going to visit his ill mother when his actual mother died few years back. So where is he now?"

"Sorry. I am borrowing that question from you," said Vedant. "So where is he now?"

"Don't know. He isn't answering his phone," replied Charith.

"I'll track his number," said Agastya as he got the number from Charith.

"Also Sir," began Charith. "Hariprasad used to work for the Army. So Veerkaran could have known him from olden days."

"Really? Highly possible then. But why is he a suspect? Why have you put him down as a suspect? What's his motive? Why would he want to kill Veerkaran? Where they having any arguments or fights?" questioned Vedant.

"I...don't know- yet Sir," said Charith realising he had been hasty. "I'll run his name down and get his records."

"Good."

"Not possible to track his phone now. It's switched off. Curiously, his phone was last located in his own house. He switched it off in his house before he moved out..."

"Or his phone is probably still in the house. Again...without a strong motive or connection, we cannot search his house. I need full report on Hariprasad immediately. Where is Sharad and Mina?" asked Vedant.

"They have started from their house. They will be here any time," replied Agastya.

"What about Sagar? Any news from him?"

"He is also on his way with Akhilesh Chandra. The lawyers are already following. From L and O of course."

"I am going downstairs for Sharad and Mina. Keep me posted."

------

"Where is the girl who came along with you the other day? I will speak only to her," commanded Mina, the minute Vedant entered the room.

Vedant concealed a smile. He was expecting a dissent from Mrs Veerkaran, especially after his intentional imperious behaviour the last time he met her. He was the bad cop then and it seemed like that image wasn't going to be forgotten anytime soon.

"Sorry Mrs Singh. You have got just me. Officer Heera is very busy," replied Vedant taking the seat opposite to Mina and Sharad. Separated by a table which held a jug of water and few glasses, the room was lit by a tubelight fitted at the centre of the ceiling. The room, painted in a dull grey colour, had no windows to provide natural light.

"It's Ok Sir. We are here to help you out in any way possible. Are there any progress? Any idea who killed my father?" asked Sharad earnestly.

"Yes. There are few progresses made and we are closing down on the killer. I know it must be difficult times for both of you," replied Vedant.

"Please. Cut all this drama," shrieked Mina. "I know all this sympathetic talk is to cover your failure to find out who murdered my husband. I am sure you don't have the faintest clue who did it. You want us to help you out..."

"So you do want us to find who killed your husband? Last time it seemed like you didn't want us to do that," said Vedant in a stern tone, the strength enough for Mina to understand that her attitude wasn't going to be encouraged. "Yes, Mrs Singh? You want us to find out the killer?"

"Yes," replied Mina, her tone changing to a more respectful one.

"Good. Then I think you wouldn't mind answering few questions?"

"I first want to know what progress you have made?"

"Fair enough," said Vedant agreeing to the bargain. "We had arrested Samar, someone convicted in the Kiran rape case, in which your husband was the prime witness. But we have evidence- forensic evidence to prove that he was being framed up and hence his charges are being dropped."

"I KNEW IT!" shouted Mina. "The same thing happened the previous time also. The real killers always escape. A person gets arrested and in a few days new evidence comes up, and the person is released. I know this game. I don't want to play this tainted game. I warned my husband to stay away from cases like this. Look what happened to him at the end."

"Mrs Singh. Here me completely, will you?" requested Vedant. Sharad put a hand over Mina's shoulder calming her down. "We are very much sure that Samar was being framed up. There were 4 people involved in your husband's murder. The guy who ran your husband with his car has been arrested. Among the other three, we have arrested one- Tejesh, who was also involved in the rape case. We have found the ID of another suspect. Hunting is going on for him. Where we have problem is finding out the ID of the prime mind behind this murder. The mastermind behind the killing. I am very sure he is someone known to your husband, someone who wanted revenge. I want you to tell me if your husband had problems with anyone- fights, arguments, fallouts- anything. From his Army days, from the time of the Kiran case...even the smallest of the detail would be of great help."

Mina forced herself not to look at Vedant as a sign that she wasn't interested. Vedant realised what was expected off him.

"Mrs Singh, I am sorry for my previous behaviour. I am truly sorry," apologised Vedant. He didn't have any plan to apologise as the entire arrogant behaviour was part of his plan before. But he understood the only way Mina was going to warm up to him, talk to him would be when he bowed before her subtly. "Please help us to find your husband's killer."

"Ma...it has to be us who should seek police's help. Not the other way around. Tell them everything you know Ma. There is no point in concealing. No one is going to harm us anymore," said Sharad calmly. The last few days had taken a toll on him which was visible in his growing stumble and puffy eyes. "Sir, I have decided to take my mother along with me to USA. We are going to settle there."

Vedant smiled as a note of appreciation at Sharad's responsibility as a son. He leaned forward placing his elbows on the table, interlinking his fingers. It was business time. He looked at Mina for an answer, any answer to begin his round of questioning. He deep down knew Mina was going to be the prime link in solving the case. A wife knew her husband more than anyone else. Just not him, but also the people around him.

"To my knowledge, my husband didn't have animosity with anyone. But yes, from the time he got to know about the blackmailing, he had been angry with me. Does that make me a suspect?"

Vedant saw that Mina wasn't joking with her question. "I don't know. I will have to consider you a suspect too then," he replied honestly. "But- for now- tell me about the blackmailing. When did that start? And how?"

"When the trial for the case was going on, I received an anonymous call asking me to stop my husband from giving evidence else they would harm my son. I didn't take it seriously initially but I got multiple calls, letters and messages."

"Did you tell your husband about the calls?"

"I did. I told him that we are being warned from giving evidence. I asked him not to give witness first but when I knew he wasn't going to back down, I asked him to tread carefully. But my husband wasn't a person who feared others. He went ahead and openly gave a strong witness. He even interacted with the media though the lawyers involved asked him not to. Later when the case went the other way around, Veer was very agitated. He called the judiciary false and fake and demanded a retrial and a reinvestigation. That was when I got the first major and real blackmail. I don't even know if Sharad remembers," Mina glanced at Sharad, "One day I got a MMS of Sharad having coffee with his friends in front of his office, with a man standing behind the bushes holding a gun aiming at my son. I was terrified."

"You told your husband about this?"

"No. I was asked not to tell my husband. They demanded a sum every month to keep my son alive. They told me that if they could turn the rape case using their power and it wouldn't take much time to make my son vanish and no one would know where he is."

"My mother told me about the blackmail. I wanted to go to the police, but my mother refused. She said there was an insider job in the rape case and hence the police might be involved in the blackmail too and she wasn't going to take any chances. She wanted me to send the money according to the blackmailer's plan every month."

"How did you know that your son would remain safe even after you accepted their terms?"

"I didn't know. I had no other choice. I was sure they would kill my son if I don't accept their terms. I somehow persuaded my husband to remain silent and accept the turnarounds in the case. I forced Sharad to take an onsite project and relocate to USA to make sure that he doesn't come in harm's way. The blackmailer knew my plan and sent me a message saying if the money wasn't transferred as per the plan, it wouldn't matter if my son was in India or in the USA."

"You should have gone to the police. Not all police are corrupt. What you did was giving in to a crime!" remarked Vedant.

"Do you have children, Sir?" asked Mina.

Vedant stared at the question unable to bring himself to answer it as casually as he had been questioning. As a matter of fact, he was stunned at the sudden arousal of the question. He averted eye contact and remained silent.

"I thought so," continued Mina. "You wouldn't understand my state, Sir. I had to save my son by any means and by any means means by any means. I didn't care if I was supporting a crime. My son was alive."

Vedant took a deep breath to stop the innocent but impactful question sink in his mind. "So...the plan was...Sharad would transfer the money to your account, you would transfer the amount to another account of yours, which was opened solely for this purpose- and then the amount was withdrawn by the blackmailers. Right?"

"Correct," agreed Mina. "When I agreed to pay, the blackmailers asked me to open a new bank account and send all the details- ATM card, account details everything to a PO box. I followed the instruction. I transferred the money as they had requested and everything was normal. Just what I wanted. My family's life to be normal."

"How did the blackmailers contact you?"

"Email."

"And how did your husband find out?"

"It was my carelessness. My husband usually used his laptop for his work but that particular day he had left his laptop at work. So he used the desktop."

"And you had kept your email account logged in and he read the mails," Vedant understood the premise.

"Yes. He was mad. He couldn't believe I had been part of this blackmail for nearly 5 years. I told him everything- I told him why I did it- but he wasn't ready to accept my justification. In a way, I thought he was fair with his reaction. I had betrayed him. I knew that one day when the truth came out, it was going to be disastrous. That was what happened. But let me tell you Sir, I wasn't ashamed of what I did. I did what I had to, to protect my son."

"What happened after that?"

"My husband ordered me to stop the transfers which I did. I couldn't risk going against him anymore. I told Sharad about the decision..."

"I was relieved," recollected Sharad. "I was always unhappy with the arrangement. I went with it for my mother. I wasn't very close to my father, Sir. All I had was my mother with whom I shared every moment of my life. I couldn't go against her wishes. We stopped sending money, but I continued transferring amount to my mother's account- for her."

"Did you get any message from the blackmailers when you stopped the transfer?"

"Interestingly, no. They didn't send me any email. I don't know why," said Mina.

"Hmm..." was what Vedant could manage as he took chances watching the mother and son. They had been blackmailed for 5 years and when they stopped the payment, they weren't questioned about the non-transfer! Unless they knew Veerkaran got to know his wife's secret. But still- why didn't they react?

"Who else knew about the blackmail? Did you tell anyone apart from your son?" asked Vedant.

"No. I didn't tell anyone- not even my mother," replied Mina. Vedant looked at Sharad who shook his head in negation.

"Did your husband know Hariprasad from his Army days?"

"Hariprasad?! My neighbour? He was in the Army?" asked Mina.

Vedant clearly saw the detail was news to Mina. "Was your husband a close friend of Hariprasad's?"

"Close? My husband rarely liked him," replied Mina with a small laugh.

"But Hariprasad told one of my officers that he and your husband were close? Why did he say that?"

"Sir, my husband is dead. No one would want to admit having strained relationships with him, would they? Hariprasad wasn't a bad guy. He was nice. But my husband didn't like him."

"Any particular reason?"

"Soon after Hariprasad had moved in, the incident of rape happened in our colony. My husband saw men fleeing the scene. He ran behind them but he missed them. Hariprasad was also in the lane through which the men escaped. But when the police questioned, he denied seeing anyone. He said he didn't notice when my husband was sure the men should have ran past him. Honestly, that guy was a complete coward. His statement made no difference though. The police caught the men responsible anyway. But my husband's opinion on Hariprasad remained poor. They talked a few times. But nothing more. Both their jobs crossed paths I think and hence they had frequent chats regarding that. But nothing more. Even on the night my husband was murdered, he just couldn't get himself to accept Hariprasad's offer to borrow his bike. He tried all means to avoid it but at the end he had no choice."

"Was Hariprasad present during the time I visited your house, Mrs Singh?"

"Yes. He was present. Now that you tell me- he was talking to Veer's old Army mates. So he was from the Army. I had no idea about that though."

"Could Veerkaran had known that Hariprasad was from the Army and he hadn't mentioned it to you?"

"My husband wasn't someone who shared every moment of his life with his wife, Sir. He had his own private life. We never talked about his Army life or his profession."

"Would you say your husband was an ideal husband, Mrs Singh?"

Mina gave a sad smile. "What's your definition of an ideal husband, Sir? My husband wasn't a perfect man. He had raised hands on me but that didn't make him bad. He loved me. He loved my son. His family was everything to him. He might not have been great in expressing his affection to us, but we knew it. We understood it. He had seen terrible things during his time in the Army which had made him really tough."

"I heard he couldn't cope with his...accident when he was in the Army?"

"Dad took his time to recuperate. We shifted to this city mainly for him. He needed a change of setting. He got to know about this New Life Group which changed him a lot. He slowly began to accept his life the way it was," answered Sharad.

"Did your husband refuse to take any award offered to him by the Army?"

"Not to my knowledge," replied Mina. "As I said, he never talked about his work to me."

"We suspect someone who knew your husband from his Army days could be involved in his death. Did anyone contact him? His old colleagues in recent times?"

Mina shook her head. She had no clue.

"One thing though," said Mina suddenly. "Might not be anything. Few weeks back, Hariprasad had come home wanting to meet Veer. Veer, who was at home, asked me to tell him that he wasn't at home. The same thing happened when Hariprasad called the landline. He said Veer wasn't picking up his phone. Veer, who was again at home, told me to say he wasn't at home. May be they had an argument."

"And did they talk after that?"

"Hmmm," thought Mina. "Not before the night when Hariprasad offered his bike."

"Sir, we should leave soon. There are many people waiting in the house and it wouldn't look good if neither of us are at home," said Sharad.

"I understand. Thank you for your cooperation. You can go now. I would like to check Veerkaran's room, though. I know Sharad. You had handed over anything that was important. But I feel a police eye would be better," said Vedant.

"Sure Sir. Thank you," said Sharad as he and his mother stood up.

"I would be looking into your email account, Mrs Singh. To trace the blackmail emails," said Vedant.

"Right," replied Mina. "Please forget what I told you the other day, Sir. I want to find out who did this to my husband and why."

-------

Vedant sat in front of the monitors of the next interview room where Akhilesh Chandra was lodged by Sagar. He gaped at the sight with bewilderment and craned his neck to look at Sagar who stood behind him with a naughty smirk.

"Are you serious? This is Akhilesh Chandra, one of our suspects?" asked Vedant resting his face on his palm.

"Oh...yes," replied Sagar playfully.

Akhilesh Chandra, son of Pragat Chandra was a boy in his early 20s. Short and lean, he could pass for a high school boy. Dressed in a T-shirt which coloured images of Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck together, he was panting hard due to the continuous sobbing. Tears rolled down like a broken dam. The lawyer present inside with him, to represent him in case of an arrest, added the task of offering tissue papers to his client to his job description.

"He is the CEO of AC Constructions?" asked Vedant again in disbelief.

"Yes. One of the CEOs," corrected Sagar.

"Why is he crying? What did you do?"

Sagar shrugged enjoying himself. "I didn't do anything."

"He is crying like a child whose chocolate has been plucked away."

"Come on Sir! Kids don't cry for that nowadays. He is crying as if someone changed Disney channel while he was watching," said Sagar amused. "Or...he is reminded that it's school tomorrow- or...YES- he couldn't cross a Candy crush level..."

"Candy crush?"asked Vedant confused.

Sagar slowly moved forward to face his boss with a perplexed silence. His face shone surprise and shock.

"Don't tell me you don't know what Candy crush is, Sir?"

"Don't rub my outdated brain, Sagar" snarled Vedant. "Kids do cry when they miss their parents, don't they? May be that's the case here. Where is his dearest daddy?"

"Presumably on his way with his legal troops."

"Did you ask him about the keys?"

"I didn't get the gap to insert by question amidst his wailings," replied Sagar, offended.

"That's because you are incompetent in this," said Vedant with a small laugh. He got up to question Akhilesh by himself. "Have you sent his fingerprints to forensics for matching with the fingerprints in the keys?"

"Yes," replied Sagar as he followed his boss into the room.

Akhilesh looked terrified at the entry of the elder man. He resembled his school principal whom he had always hated. He hated school. He hated college. He hated all the places where he had been bullied for his timid nature. He couldn't understand why he felt scared when he met people. He didn't want to be around new people. He wanted his friends and family to be around him all the time. He wanted his friends and family to help him in every step of his life. He had gotten used to them. He had gotten so used to them that he couldn't dare imagine his life on his own. But now he had been left alone in the room, in a room in the police station with police officials who looked like hungry dogs ready to anything given to them. He was petrified. He tried hard to put up a confident faade. Sagar stood at the back, near the door and witnessed his boss at work.

"Akhilesh?" called Vedant. Akhilesh avoided looking at him. There was anger on his face. He wished to run away from the place but he felt shackled. "Akhilesh," repeated Vedant with more calmness. "I know you wish to leave this place. You want to leave this place, right?"

Akhilesh took deep angry breaths but nodded signalling his wish.

"Fine. Even I hate holding you here. You can leave in 5 minutes. I promise. I have a small test for you. You answer the questions and you can leave."

"I am not a child," shouted Akhilesh, still not looking at anyone. "I am not out of my mind to fall for your childish demands."

Vedant was taken by surprise. He realised his observation was wrong. The boy- the man before him was timid and innocent but not childish or foolish. He was just a scared boy who expressed his deepest emotions when alone but preferred wearing a mask in front of others.

"What do you want then?" asked Vedant.

"I want to leave. I don't want to be here," replied Akhilesh.

"The bargain still stands, Akhilesh. Answer few questions and you can leave," replied Vedant. He glanced at the lawyer for a little help.

"I think it won't harm you Sir," the lawyer told Akhilesh, whose weeping had stopped considerably.

"Why are you crying Akhilesh?" asked Vedant trying to make Akhilesh focus on his own crying state. He wanted to make Akhilesh conscious of his own state, strike his pride. Akhilesh immediately wiped the tears stationed on the curves of his cheeks and sat straight. "I won't answer any of your questions without my father."

"Did your father ask you to tell that?"

Akhilesh intentionally ignored the question and began rubbing his hair to get it into position.

"It's very simple Akhilesh. You answer my questions. You can leave. If you are going to wait for your father to come, you have to wait for hours- may be days- or even months! You will have to stay here with no one around. No TV or mobile or computer- no friends or parents- no bed to sleep- very little food- You want all that?"

"You can't do that!" screamed Akhilesh. His voice was loud but his body language showed fear.

"Oh yes I can, can't I Sagar?" Vedant put a winning smile.

"Yes! Of course you can Sir. If you see Akhilesh, this Sir in front of you runs this place- just like how your father runs your family and business? Everything happens according to him here. He can do whatever he wishes. So it's better you agree to him and answer his questions."

"It's not going to be very difficult questions, Akhilesh. Just very simple ones like- did you hand over the construction site keys to Shirish on Friday? I know you did. Your fingerprints was found on the keys." Though the forensics hadn't confirmed the match, Vedant tried his luck.

"Yes," said Akhilesh slowly. "I gave it to him. That's a very easy question actually."

"See! Next is even more easy. Did you go to the construction site and opened the gates using those keys? What did you do with the key?"

"The key wasn't for me," he said with a bright smile and energy. "That was for my Dad. You have to question him- not me. You have got the wrong person for the quiz. You see- one day- my secretary gave these keys to me saying my father had asked for them. I took it and gave it to him and later he returned it to me and I gave it back to Shirish. It's simple."

Vedant clapped. "Superb Akhilesh. Correct answer. You remember the night before the day you gave the keys- Thursday night. Remember?"

"Why?"

"Where you at home?"

"Yes. I was watching a cricket match. India Vs South Africa. India lost. India never wins nowadays."

"You were watching with your father, right?"

"You needn't answer that question, Sir," interrupted the lawyer.

"I know the answer," replied Akhilesh. "No...I was watching it alone. My father wasn't even at home. He came only the next day morning."

"Ah!!!" exclaimed Vedant with unusual happiness. "Great! Brilliant answer. Thank you so much."

"Can I leave?"

"Oh yes you can," replied Vedant as the boy immediately jumped out of the chair and ran out of the room followed by the lawyer.

"I think you might have to stay a little longer, Mr Lawyer. Someone has to represent the boy's father," said Sagar looking triumphantly.

Chapter 24

"Daddy dearest has taken an about turn and has gone back home the minute he knew his son was out of our clutch," informed Sagar. He entered Vedant's room and slumped into a chair uninvited and looked for some heated reaction from his boss. Pragat wasn't walking into the trap they had laid for him. They assumed he would come to them and blast for hauling his son to their station. They should have probably waited for Pragat to get entrapped before releasing Akhilesh.

"What else?" asked Vedant almost acting deaf towards the news brought in by Sagar. He was sitting leaned back on his chair pondering at the ceiling doing nothing, perhaps thinking. Sagar wasn't pleased.

"Please tell me you heard what I said and you are planning some heroic moves. Else I am not impressed by your attitude," said Sagar openly. In a way Vikram and Sagar would be balanced equally if weighed in terms of approach. They were bold and straight forward with their views. Only difference was Sagar was more level headed and not as short tempered as Vikram.

"Get out!" said Vedant casually not wasting a second to look at Sagar. He knew Sagar was trying to get him pressurized and make dramatic moves for his own entertainment.

To a certain extent, Sagar enjoyed annoying his boss. He left Vedant's room and took his seat in the squad room. It was lunch break and Vedant had ordered everyone to take an actual break from the case and rest their fatigued mind for some time. Sagar switched off Agastya's monitor much to his irritation.

"Boss' order," he said receiving an angry glare from Agastya. Agastya hated whenever anyone touched his machines and gadgets. He was the only one who had the authority to even brush the tiniest bit of his equipments. He switched it on the next moment without a word of dissent. Sagar didn't require a word to understand the unuttered message.

Ruby was munching her sandwich and reading a book simultaneously. Sagar planned his attack on his next prey. He was rotating in his rolling chair with a wicked smile running his plan on his mind. His devious imagination was disturbed with the fuming entry of Heera who didn't look happy a single bit.

"What happened?" asked Ruby as Heera sat ragingly, dropping her belongings on her workspace.

"Got a call from school," said Heera, her tone bathed in exasperation. "She had complains against my boy."

"Which one?" asked Sagar, a little too quickly.

"Elder one. Apparently, he hasn't been scoring well in his exams- makes loads of spelling mistakes, can't read properly, beats his friends, and the list goes on..."

"Oh!" remarked Ruby. "Hmm...Is he having any problem with his..."

"I know he is dyslexic," said Heera as a matter of fact. "I have watched Taare Zameen Par and I completely understand his problems. But the important issue is- all teachers aren't Aamir Khan, are they? Instead of finding a way to solve my boy's problem, she sits there lecturing me for one hour."

"I understand Heera. I mean...it can't be easy for you," said Ruby doubtfully. She didn't want to push further.

"These teachers nowadays! All they want is top scores from students. They don't care for the students who need their help. All their focus is on the students who actually don't need their help. They are good on their own. All schools want now is to show off their good students and chuck the weak students outside their campus. You know how many times Nikhil missed his classes because he was sent outside the class as punishment? And then they expect him to score high marks. Nonsense!"

"Where is he now? Nikhil?" asked Sagar, this time with seriousness. He had met Heera's boys and he was greatly fond of them.

"Home. With his grandmother. He didn't speak a word on our way back home," replied Heera.

"Have you taken him for counselling?" asked Ruby.

Heera nodded but didn't say anything.

"All fine?" asked Vedant standing by the door. "I heard everything," he added.

"All fine, Sir and- Thank you for giving me an hour permission to sort out," replied Heera without the enthusiasm she usually displayed.

"No problem," said Vedant as he walked into the squad room. "Message from the top. We can't touch Pragat without any evidence. Not even a friendly chat. We have to gather something against him to even glance at him."

"We have established connections- him and our suspects," said Sagar.

"All our own imaginative speculations. Circumstantial. We have nothing solid. No proof," Vedant looked at Heera, "How did it go with Dinesh Chavan?"

"Good. Nice man," began Heera. "He didn't work with Veerkaran. His regiment was different. But he did hear all the rumours that spread at that time. He could help us only with that. There is no proof that it is true."

"What award did he refuse?" asked Ruby.

"There was some scam that went a year or two before Veerkaran retired. Our nation's fire arms were sold illegally to the underworld. Veerkaran and another officer brought this to the notice of their superiors which resulted in the scam to be exposed."

"Were the men responsible caught?" asked Charith.

"Dinesh wasn't sure. He said some kind of an operation was executed- encounter type- and the people responsible were caught at the end, but not without casualties. Internal enquiry was conducted but the names were never disclosed. But he suggested that it would be in the records for sure."

"So Veerkaran was behind the dismissal of few officers? They would want revenge," said Charith.

"And the award was for Veerkaran's grit to bring the issue to the fore," Heera continued. "He refused the award because it was proposed after his own accident when he was in the Army. He felt he wasn't deserving and hence refused. But the significant point is- the encounter operation which took place, also happened after Veerkaran's accident- when he was in the hospital. So Dinesh isn't sure if Veerkaran even knew who was involved in the scam," informed Heera.

"Which means- Veerkaran didn't know whose lives he ruined," said Sagar. "I mean what he did was right and courageous. But it would have certainly ruined the lives of those officers- their career. So- may be- one or more of those officers took revenge on Veerkaran for their dismissal?"

"But why now? After what- 12 years? Why wait for so long to take revenge?" asked Vedant, wonder creasing his face. There was silence. "Any idea who the other person was, the officer who complained along with Veerkaran?"

"No Sir," replied Heera. "But now- we can be a little more certain that this incident could be the reason behind Veerkaran's murder. Revenge for ravaging careers!"

"I agree," said Ruby. "But we can't eliminate our first story. The murder could also have been because Veerkaran knew about the goof ups in the Kiran rape case- that Samar wasn't the actual culprit- knew who was behind the deceit and was going to blow the whistle. Hence he was silenced. This motive seems more strong according to me. Like Sir said, if those officers wanted to take revenge against Veerkaran, they had far too much time to have killed him in those 12 years."

Heera didn't contradict. "We are pretty sure that the Kiran rape case and Veerkaran's murder are connected due to Samar and Tejesh's involvment. Now, with the new details, let us assume the Army encounter and the murder is also connected. Then the person involved- the Army guy- he must be linked to the rape case too, right?"

"Ahh!! My head is spinning. We are confusing the case way too much," exclaimed Sagar.

"A and B are connected. C and B are connected. Hence A and C must be connected," said Charith.

"Let's keep it even more simple. For every murder there has to be a motive. The motive could be revenge or money," explained Vedant.

"Or jealously- or just pure hatred," added Ruby.

"Right! So- for our case- we can exclude money and may be even jealousy? That leaves us with revenge and hatred."

"Due to hatred, one might need revenge," said Ruby.

"Ok. Now we have two branches- Rape case and Army scam," said Vedant as he made a diagram.

"Our killer must be someone who must be connected to the rape case for sure and may be to both," said Sagar.

"Pragat doesn't match with any of the branches," said Vedant.

"Hariprasad?" asked Charith. "He is from the Army. May be he was the one involved in the scam?"

"And Veerkaran didn't know it was the guy whose career he doomed? Possible," said Vedant. "But he has been Veerkaran's neighbour for a very long time- from the time of the rape case at least. Waiting for 5 years to take revenge- doesn't add up."

"And he isn't involved in the rape case," said Heera.

"We don't have anyone else with Army background in our people of interest," said Ruby.

"May be it is Pragat. Any connection with Army? His father, brother- anyone?" asked Sagar.

"No. No connection with Army in the family. I am going through news archives now for anything interesting on him," replied Agastya.

"Sir! We can talk to Tejesh. He definitely knows who the mastermind. Case closed for us easily," stated Sagar.

"Oh yes we can do that," replied Vedant with false agreement. "But he is in the hospital now, faking his health. He was indeed injured in the shootout but not to the extent that he can't talk. The doctors have informed that he would be ready for questioning tomorrow. We can wait till tomorrow and get the truth. But..."

"Our deadline would be over," said Heera.

"That would be ridiculous!" remarked Sagar "I mean...We are so close to catching the killer. They can't be seriously thinking about deadlines and stuff now."

"We can't take chances, Sagar," said Vedant. "Tejesh is always there to point us towards the mastermind. He is a great witness for us. But let's do what we can to find the mastermind on our own accord within our deadline."

"Sir!" called someone standing by the door of the squad room. All eyes fell on him. There was a mild surprise on everyone's face. Vedant looked appalled.

"Please someone tell me it's not Vikram," he said indignantly.

"Sorry Sir. But I have something to inform. So..." said Vikram in a low voice. He looked at everyone scrupulously.

"You should have worn your invisibility cloak, Sir," asked Heera receiving a laugh from her colleagues except one.

"Invisibility cloak? What the hell is that?" asked Vedant irked.

"Oh God! You don't know invisibility cloak also, Sir? When are you going to enter the real world?" exclaimed Sagar jokingly.

"Sir, It's from Harry Potter," said Heera.

"Yes yes! I have heard of Harry Potter," replied Vedant.

"Oh! Thank God!" remarked Sagar.

"Can I come in?" asked Vikram walking inside the room even before Vedant could tell anything.

"Tell what you want to tell quickly and get yourself packing out of here. You don't know the risk you are bringing in by your presence" said Vedant seriously.

"I met the family of the man whom Vedant met at the hospital the night he was murdered. I thought may be Veerkaran told him something of importance. The man was a colleague of Veerkaran, a fellow Army officer. He served the Army in the same regiment as him. But now he is suffering from dementia. He couldn't tell anything relevant. But his brother was of great help. He gave me most of the details. So what's important for us is- this officer and Veerkaran had brought a scam to the eye of the Army superiors which led to some kind of an encounter operation. Later, they both were awarded for their bravery and sincerity. While he accepted, Veerkaran refused. But this incident had strengthened their friendship."

"That answers most of our unanswered questions," said Heera as she explained what she gathered from Dinesh to Vikram. "Did the brother say who were involved in the scam?" asked Heera.

"No. He said he has no clue about that. We tried asking the officer, but he couldn't understand anything. In fact, he believed he was in a space ship and we were blood sucking aliens."

"Sci-fi fan! Good," commented Sagar.

"From when is he suffering from dementia?" asked Vedant.

"Few years now. He had a major fall down the stairs of his house and from then he has been having problems with his memory," said Vikram.

"Veerkaran's Army life isn't getting us anywhere," said Sagar severely. "Yes he was involved in blowing up some scam. But that was years back. Taking revenge after so many years makes no sense. And we are never going to get our hands- not even tip of our fingers- on the Army records any time soon. This line of investigation is a complete waste of time," he paused before he continued in an infuriated tone. "We should focus on Pragat. Pragat and Tejesh are the guys who know our mastermind. Tejesh can't help us on time but Pragat can. Perhaps, Pragat is the mastermind himself. We should focus on him- Authority or No authority."

"Then bring me something against Pragat!" said Vedant sternly, eyes fixed on Sagar. "We all know Pragat is connected but we can't touch him without any evidence or witness against him. How many times should I have to tell that to you?"

Sagar stayed silent, jaws gripping tightly. The air suddenly turned tensed.

"Ruby! What about Raj Kapoor? Could he remember anything?" asked Vedant.

"Nothing substantial. The guy is a misleading drunkard. He couldn't remember the face of our mastermind clearly," replied Ruby. She took a paper from her table and read from it. "The man was tall- 5.10" or 5.11", deep grunt voice, very fit, didn't know the meaning of smile, was in a hurry, had cash ready in hand- Nothing useful. H-12 police have taken charge of the case and have taken Raj Kapoor under their wing for further enquiry."

"Is there a case in the first place for Rajesh's death? There is no body. We are going with the word of a drunkard." asked Vikram.

"We have to inform Rajesh's family anyway, which would mean Jeetenge Hum party would be informed and I am sure they would create a huge uproar out of this. It's better to file a case ourselves and begin investigation. Also- separate cases have to be filed for separate deaths," said Vedant. "Agastya! Where is the manager of New Life Group?"

"On his way. The COO isn't available- the Jeet guy you told me about. The manager is coming in a few minutes."

"What's the status with Michael's hunt? Our ATM guy," asked Vedant.

"Hunt is still on. He is definitely hiding. Railways stations, bus stands and airports have been notified. His friends and family are being questioned. Jeetenge Hum party members are being questioned too."

It was nearing 3 pm. The next few hours were probably the last few hours they had to deduce the mastermind. Leaving it for the next day, their last day, would be foolish. Vedant, in one corner of his heart, felt the case wouldn't be snatched away from his team considering the vast progress they had made in a short period. Handing over the case to another team and asking them to start from scratch would be ludicrous. It would be completely unfair to stick to the deadline challenge at that moment. There were chances of making hasty decisions. He could persuade the Commissioner and extend the deadline. He had that influence. But he wanted prove and show his team's metal. He wanted to show his team was capable to taking up any challenge and achieving it victoriously.

"Sir," called Heera. "What shall we do now?"

Vedant sat thoughtfully. Were all their efforts worth it? Should he still push his team to the edge? His team was ready for their next instructions. They hadn't given up. They still thought they had a chance to find the mastermind before time. They trusted his instincts and game plans.

"I think I may have something for you, Sir," said Agastya, saving the moment, pointing at his monitor.

"About time," said Sagar as the team moved to crowd around Agastya.

"There were nothing of interest relating to Pragat on the media in recent times. So I had to go through all the news archives. I found this article which seemed interesting. It's titled "Rags to Riches- But how?" The article questions Babu Chandra's (Owner of Moon Iron and Steel which appointed L&O to represent Samar in the rape case) ways of business and how he was able to bring his steel business to the top within a short period considering he didn't have great investments or tie ups with other companies. The author doubts the credibility of the business. He says he has an anonymous source who informs that Pragat Chandra (cousin of Babu Chandra) is involved in the selling of illegal firearms to the underworld and that's where all the investments to Babu's business came from. The author questions how Pragat got his hand on firearms and why the authorities haven't taken any action. In due course, Pragat opened his own Construction company which used his uncle's iron and steel for the most part. It was all a business profit tangle. The article never made news and was buried comfortably. I got in touch with the author who wrote the article. He has emailed his findings." Agastya clicked on the attachment to open a PDF. It ran upto 200 pages.

"200 pages!" exclaimed Sagar.

"Read and see if there is anything useful for us, Agastya," said Vedant. "But the good news is- we can now connect Pragat to the Army through the firearms business and hence to our case. The people who were incriminated in the scam could have been selling the firearms to Pragat. Probably they all got together to murder Veerkaran."

"Assuming this article is true," said Heera.

"Let us assume it is true for our own good. Do we get the chance to talk with Pragat based on this? An attempt at least?" asked Sagar.

"I'll put on a call. We need to meet Pragat just to check his alibi."

"He wasn't at the crime scene. So his alibi is going to check out," said Charith.

"Can't be sure of that," said Ruby.

"Akhilesh said Pragat wasn't at home. Let's see where he was then. We have to track down Hariprasad also. If he wasn't at home, then where was he?" asked Vedant.

"With Pragat, perhaps?" asked Sagar.

"That's probably the wildest speculation I have ever made. Connecting two complete strangers who possibly doesn't even know each other. But they are the ones we have for now," said Vedant. "Right! Our moves for the next few hours."

The team listened attentively.

"Vikram! Go home! That's final." Vikram nodded knowing it would be in vain to argue with Vedant. "Ruby. Meet Lohan and Shulya. I want to know what happened and why Lohan's van was used for disposing Rajesh's body. Take an officer with you."

Ruby nodded.

"Charith. Request for Army records on Hariprasad. Also get the records for the scam and the subsequent encounter operation. Heera, go to New Life Group and talk to the employees there and see if Veerkaran had any problems with anyone. Agastya! Keep digging what you can."

Sagar looked sceptically at his boss. He knew he annoyed his boss beyond the limit he should have. At the same time, he didn't expect his boss to take it seriously. He annoyed people deliberately because he knew it wouldn't backfire. He was right.

"Sagar, you with me for questioning Pragat. Need someone to irritate him and who better than you," said Vedant turning away with a slight smiling glance. "Get on guys! Meet here at 5.30 pm."

-------

New Life Group manager- Javed

"I was expecting to meet Mr Jeet," said Vedant as he took the seat against the manager of New Life Group. Javed, in his 50s, wearing a perfect black suit, sat confidently as if in a business meeting. He indeed meant business.

"Sorry Sir. He is unavailable. He is on a business trip. But he has offered to connect through Skype if it's alright with you," said Javed.

"Oh!" said Vedant in surprise. "That's- nice of him. I would definitely like to talk to him but after a few minutes. I am sure you know why you are here Mr Javed. What can you tell me about Veerkaran and his job?"

Javed instantly stretched his hand with a file which contained the details questioned. He also orated the same. "Mr Veerkaran Singh has been employed with New Life Group for over 8 years. He initially joined as a part time employee but later turned into a full time consultant. His specialisation was 'The role of self-motivation for a meaningful life'. He visited hospitals, old age homes, rehabilitation centres and prisons."

"What kind of a person was he? Did he have problems of any kind working for New Life?"

"Mr Veerkaran Singh was a very meticulous planner. That was what he was very well known for. Right from his notes to his delivery of speech, everything was planned according to the duration and audience. He was very punctual but lost his temper every time someone wasn't. He expected his colleagues to work like him which caused rift among the consultants. Few consultants didn't want to work with him especially when they had joint sessions to deliver. The arguments were strictly professional- nothing personal. He had recently sent his resignation email too. But before we could talk to him, he was dead," Javed spoke with no hesitation.

"Who received his resignation email? You?"

"No. Mr Jeet. He informed me and asked me to meet Veerkaran and talk to him."

"Did Veerkaran have any problems with Jeet?"

"Not to my knowledge. But I am hardly in office. I travel a lot. So I wouldn't be the right person to comment. But to the extent I know, they didn't hate each other."

"When did you last see Veerkaran?"

"Hmmm- About a month back. But he could have visited office after that."

"Right! Could you get Mr Jeet connected please?"

Javed effortlessly connected to Skype through his tablet and got Jeet on the screen within minutes. Vedant asked Javed to leave the room so that the conversation could be private.

"Hello Mr. Vashisht," said Jeet with a smile. He showed instant recognition. "How can I help you?"

"Your manager has answered most of my questions. I want to know if you knew Veerkaran from your Army days?"

"Not really," replied Jeet without deliberation. "I mean we both were in the Army, but we served different teams. I heard about him a lot but met him the first time only in NLG."

"Hmm- When did you- come out of the Army?"

"8 years back," replied Jeet.

"Why do you think Veerkaran resigned? We read his email. But the reason wasn't stated. It just said 'as per our discussion'. What was discussed?"

"He wasn't happy with the work environment. He had problems with company policies. We had arguments regarding it loads of times. But at the end, he said he couldn't work here anymore and hence he resigned."

"Did you try to talk him out of it?"

"Honestly- no. Many consultants in our company had problems with Veerkaran and hence his leaving was in a way of great help to me. After every session, there used to be complains about Veerkaran's way of working. So his resignation was a blessing to me. Don't get me wrong. I am just being practical. I have to look after the smooth operations of the company too. No place for relationships."

"Was there anyone in particular whom Veerkaran didn't get on well?"

"No one like that Sir. You have to understand that everyone are Ex-Army. Each one have their own principles which they would never let go. But they aren't kids to have fights. All was in good spirit."

"Where were you on the night Veerkaran was murdered?" asked Vedant as casually as the rest of the questions.

"You are asking for my alibi, Sir? Am I under any suspicion?" asked Jeet, curiosity colouring his face.

"No. But it would be of help to us to eliminate you. So?" replied Vedant responding with a smile.

"I was in a business meeting with a client," he replied with patent sincerity. "In the city. Client's office," he added.

Vedant glared at the face of Jeet on the screen. He didn't pry more and deliberately jumped to the next question.

"Where are you now, Mr Jeet?"

"In Tanpur. 3 hours away from our city. There is a rehabilitation center here. Just working out a deal with them."

"Great! Thanks for your time Mr. Jeet. Good luck with your deal."

"Contact me anytime Mr Vashisht. Will help in any way I can."

Vedant ceased the connection, took the tablet and left the room. He handed over the gadget to Javed, formally thanked him for his time.

Pragat Chandra

The ting sound announced the tenants of the elevator that they had reached their destination. Letting the boss walk out first, Sagar followed behind looking around the surroundings with keen eyes. The officers of Special Branch were met with a sparkling reception entrance, decorated with bright white walls, and a shining white marble floor. A reception table headed the floor with two doors positioned on either sides behind the table. An attractive young girl dressed in a formal black suit guarded the entrance with her beaming smile, displaying her perfectly arranged teeth.

Vedant immediately turned to observe his subordinate. He expected to notice a change in Sagar's behaviour and his expectation was fulfilled. Sagar walked adjusting his collar and ruffling his hair to its actual position. A confident grin was stuck to his face and his eager eyes didn't let the girl's presence off his radar. Vedant smiled as he directed his sight back to his path.

Reaching the reception, Vedant did all the talking while Sagar did all the observing. Vedant had talked to the Commissioner regarding his need to meet Pragat. The Commissioner was very much reluctant to grant permission for the meeting but Vedant stood his ground. He wanted to know if Pragat had anything to do with the murder. He didn't have any vendetta against him. But having Pragat linked to almost every suspect in his list couldn't be ignored. The Commissioner had warned him not to blame Pragat for anything without evidence. It had to be proper questioning within the limits. Pragat held a high position in Jeetenge Hum Party and he didn't want the party members to shout foul play and create a media wreck. He adhered to Vedant's request and arranged a meeting with Pragat.

Vedant showed his ID card to the reception girl. "We have an appointment with Mr. Pragat Chandra."

"Yes. He is waiting for you," said the girl with a sweet voice. She pressed a button which summoned a uniformed office assistant entering from the right door. "Take them to Sir's room."

The assistant knocked the door and opened it and let the officers inside. Pragat was sitting behind a big wooden table located at the centre of the lavishly furnished room. Book shelves covered the walls and hosted hundreds of books neatly arranged. Behind the table stood a fish tank containing different coloured fishes which swam like they were dodging through the traffic. Pragat stood up and pointed his hand at the side where a huge sofa set stood. "Please take a seat."

Pragat wasn't like anything the officers imagined. Dressed in a blue casual turtle-neck T-shirt and black trousers, Pragat was someone whom would be marked as a man of wisdom. A smart looking man in his late 40s. Tall and fit for his age, the bass in his voice amazed the officers. Vedant and Sagar expected to see a stiff serious man displaying clear signs of disapproval over the meeting but the man in front was full of energy. He was smiling and was pleasant in his approach. Vedant and Sagar sat next to each other in the three seater rich sofa. Though taken back a little by the amiable atmosphere, they stood by their plan. They were there to question and get all the answers. It didn't matter if Pragat was god or devil.

"Tea- Coffee?" asked Pragat standing by his intercom on his table.

"No thanks," said Vedant before Sagar could make any demands.

Pragat stood perched on the table, the smile not leaving his face. "The Commissioner said you had some questions for me. To be honest, I wasn't really happy with the way my son was dragged to your station. But I have always given my support to the police and their enquiries. Hence I didn't mind. I assume you think I am involved with your murder- I mean- your murder investigation in some way?"

Vedant nudged Sagar to take lead.

"Yes Sir," spoke Sagar instantly. "UHmm. We have found certain connections between you and our suspects and would like to clear our doubts. We know you are part of the Jeetenge Hum Party..."

"Am I here as the MD of Bright Builders or as a member of Jeetenge?" asked Pragat, sarcasm painting his tone.

"You can assume whichever role you want, Sir? For us, we need to question the man- Pragat Chandra. That's all," said Sagar with no qualms or hesitation.

The smile on Pragat's face struggle to stay at the answer but it sustained. The sharp cunning look on his face apparently went undisguised.

"So...You are an important member of the party. Do you communicate closely with all the party members?" questioned Sagar.

"What do you think? I am like the minister who doesn't show up in Parliament after winning the election? I work closely with my party members and their projects."

"Great! Very commendable," lauded Sagar. "In that case you would know Samar and Rajesh? The Lala brothers?"

Pragat took a moment to answer. "Yes. Of course I know. It's a shame. The things they have got themselves into."

"Do you know them personally?"

"What do you mean by personally?"

"Have they worked for you? For your company? For any of your companies?"

"No. They are party workers. And why will I employ them in my companies knowing they are criminals. Never," replied Pragat, patience slipping away slowly.

"AC Constructions is part of your empire?"

"Yes. It is. But my son and his friends take care of the operations. I don't interfere much."

"You didn't even interfere when your son employed Rajesh Lala as one of the board directors?" asked Sagar. Vedant was quietly observing the changes in Pragat's behaviour. "Yes. Mr Pragat?"

"Rajesh Lala? In my company? That's impossible," said Pragat gruffly.

Vedant pulled out a paper from the file he had brought along with him. He walked to Pragat and handed over the news snippet which contained an article about AC Constructions' tie up with another company and a picture of all the directors standing in a line. Vedant pointed at Rajesh's face in the standing flock.

"It says Mukesh Ambani not Rajesh Lala," said Pragat reading the citation below the picture.

"We aren't fools Sir. We noticed that too," said Sagar. He was deliberately driving on the edge. "Rajesh, after his release from the prison, had changed his name to Mukesh Ambani. We have his name change certificate. So- you didn't know Rajesh was working for your son's company?"

"No."

"How come your son didn't know whom he was employing? Didn't he run background checks?"

"My son is the CEO. Doing background checks isn't his work. He has lot more than that. HR must have made some mistake or Rajesh must have cheated in some way."

"I'll definitely ask you son," said Sagar with a clever smile. The game had began. Pragat felt vulnerable and Sagar could feel it. "Why did you want the keys to the AC Constructions' construction site, Mr Pragat?"

"Keys? What keys? I don't know anything about keys," replied Pragat emphatically.

"Come on Mr Pragat. Accept you knew what was going to happen? That's why you wanted the keys."

"Are you accusing me of murder, Mr...Whoever you are!" Pragat stood erect in anger and resentment.

"Murder? When did I say the keys were to the site where the murder happened? So you did know what keys I was talking about?"

Vedant decided it was time for double attack. "We have your secretary's statement which says you had asked her to fetch the construction site's keys for you. Your son confirmed that the secretary gave him the keys- he gave it to you- and the next day you returned it to him. Is your son lying, Mr Pragat?"

Tension swept Pragat. The smile vanished. "Oh! Those keys! I remember," he lied clearly, his head downcast. "It was the wrong keys. I had asked for the keys for a different location. So I returned to my son the next day. I didn't use it."

"How did you know the keys were the wrong ones?" asked Sagar.

"I know how the right ones look," Pragat replied promptly.

Vedant and Sagar smiled triumphantly. The answers weren't conclusive. It wouldn't stand strongly in court.

"Do you know Tejesh or Tejpal? He was a friend of the Lala brothers. He was also convicted in the rape case?" Sagar continued his questions.

"What do you think about me?" asked Pragat with disgust. "I don't deal with those kind of people. I find your questions inappropriate."

"Sorry sorry!" said Sagar with a wide smile, raising his hand in surrender, which irritated Pragat even more.

"Is that all?" asked Pragat. "I have loads of other appointments."

"I am sure you have heard of Veerkaran Singh who was murdered," said Vedant, not giving ear to Pragat's interruption.

"Yes. I know- that's the reason you are here," said Pragat displaying frustration and boredom.

"Did you know he worked for the New Life Group?"

"No. I didn't. I didn't know who he was or what he did until you guys dragged me and my son into your enquiries."

"Where were you on the night he was murdered, Mr Pragat?" Sagar finally came to the eventual question.

"At home," he replied casually.

"But your son told me you were not at home," said Vedant with raised eyebrows in question.

Pragat looked as if he had seen a ghost. Still and transfixed.

"Sir," called Sagar.

"Oh! Yes yes," changed Pragat. He rubbed his eyes and face buying time to think. "Ahhmmm- I was at a meeting with a client. Yes. I remember. I got a little confused with the dates. I was at a client meeting that day."

"At 1 am?" asked Sagar. "You have meetings at 1 am in the morning?"

Pragat could feel the officers were cornering him.

"Am I under some suspicion? Why are you asking where I was at the time of murder?" asked Pragat truculently. "I am sorry. I am not going to answer any more questions without my lawyer."

"Thought so," commented Sagar looking at his boss.

"We are just eliminating people from our enquiry Sir, so that we can proceed with our investigation," said Vedant calmly. "Your son told me he was at home watching some match. You said you were at a client meeting. We aren't saying you are lying Sir. Understand that we have to question every one of them who get involved in our enquiries."

"Alright," replied Pragat. "I have told you. I was in a meeting with a client. Our meetings run through the night sometimes. Business is not easy to run you see."

"Of course! Who was at the meeting, Sir? Your client?" asked Vedant.

"Mr Jeet. He works for New Life Group."

"The company for whom Veerkaran worked?" Sagar was surprised.

"It seems so now," said Pragat. "If you would excuse me please, I have to leave for another meeting now." Pragat pointed at the door. He didn't care if the officers had more questions but he had had enough.

"Thanks for your time," said Vedant as both the officers left without another word.

Outside the building, Vedant and Sagar stood by their car. The clouds were gathering for their dark thundering musical. Vedant felt a shiver go down his spine when the cold breeze hit his face.

"So Pragat was with Jeet at the time of murder," said Sagar standing by the passenger door of the SUV.

"Jeet also said he was at a meeting at the time of murder. Possibly with Pragat?" said Vedant.

"That would mean, neither of them could be our mastermind," said Sagar with a slight grimace.

"Or- both are lying!"
