I was stumbling, looking in the dark
With an empty heart
But you say you feel the same
Could we ever be enough?
Baby we could be enough
Khushi stood frozen long after the kiss. It was like she was teleported into a different world where everything was fine. Where there were no bullies and where she had her long hair in place. But the mirage didn't last long. She knew they were just some fudged up fantasies her mind wanted to be true.
She did not trust Arnav. Then why did she forgive him?
Maybe because he seemed do sincere. So very wanting for her forgiveness.
She knew that she was just making her bed for more hurt to sleep in but she didn't care in that moment. In that very moment she wanted to pretend that the world was exactly like the fairytale she imagined her life to be.
And that's exactly what she did.
She danced with Arnav till her feet ache. She laughed with him and he laughed with her too. Much to everyone's surprise, Arnav was looking happy and not his usual brooding self.
Khushi knew his happiness was true because there was a certain twinkle behind his eyes. A shine that would dim every time the "bully" Arnav came to life. She liked this Arnav better. He was nice and sweet and caring.
But then why did he do those terrible things to her?
Was he the real Arnav or the one who makes her laugh till she cries the real one?
Her mind was in a chaos. She wanted, needed to know why he did what he did if he wanted her forgiveness in the first place?
Arnav Singh Raizada was a big mystery. One she desperately wanted to solve. But at the same time knew, it wasn't her place to.
As the final strings to the song played out, Arnav and Khushi curtsied to each other, copying others and smiled.
"I had a very good time. Thank you." Khushi said with a genuine smile.
"The pleasure was all mine, shortcake." Arnav beamed like a kid high on sugar. It looked weird!
Her body shivered at the nickname. It held memories of another time. Which wasn't long ago but seemed like ages away.
Arnav was quick to notice the reaction and leaned in to whisper softly in her ears, "You will always be my shortcake."
There was a certain possessive edge to it and Khushi was utterly confused by that.
Right when she was about to question it, Adin interrupted with a cough. "May I?"
He smirked towards his sister and did a gentlemanly gesture of asking for her hand.
Khushi giggled in reply and tried to put her hands in his but noticed that they were already held by Arnav. She tried to pull her hands out of his grip but he just tugged her closer.
For the second time that night, he leaned in closer.
Khushi's heart went into an overdrive. His intensions were clear and none of them were good. With Adin watching the scene unfold with clenched fists and slightly bulged eyes, she grew all the more nervous. What was Arnav trying to do?!
While her mind was having flashes of the supposed outbreak of temper from her brother, she felt soft and warm lips at her jaw.
She shuddered at the feeling that Arnav noticed judging by his smirk.
"Happy Birthday, Shortcake." He smiled softly and put her hand in Adin's and walked away.
Not even turning back to look if she was alive after the stunt he pulled. She sure didn't feel alive! Her heart almost stopped beating for a moment.
"You two seemed cozy." Adin said through clenched teeth, trying not to burst from all the rage running through his nerves.
"It's not what you think," Khushi said with a soft voice starting to sway to the music with her twin. "He apologised."
She said it so softly that Adin almost didn't hear her. But he did.
Shocked from her admission, Adin jerked his face towards her looking straight in her eyes. "He did?!"
Arnav wasn't the one to apologize. Not that he had heard of it. "What did you say?"
Adin asked with a stiffened spine. Already knowing his sister like the back of his hand, he knew what she did and didn't approve of it one bit.
"I forgave him." Khushi mumbled with down casted, shameful eyes. She knew she acted very nave but surprisingly, she didn't regret it.
"Thought so." Adin grumbled.
"I just don't want you to be hurt. Not by him especially. After what he did to you, I can't trust that man." He groaned like a stubborn kid denied of his favourite toy.
"I just want to give him a second chance. You know everyone-"
"Deserves a second chance. I know." He sighed completing her sentence.
Seeing the gloomy expression entering her eyes, Adin decided to change the topic.
"Enough about that douche-bag. Tell me what did you get me?" Adin was genuinely excited. Khushi always came up with the best gifts.
Khushi glared at the first part of sentence but soon the glare melted into a sly cunning smirk. "Wouldn't you wanna know." She teased him.
"Aw common! Tell me already!" Adin whined like a 5 year old.
"Fine, fine. Come with me." Khushi enthusiastically dragged him across the ballroom and towards the exit.
"Is it outside?" Adin was growing impatient.
"Yup."
"Is it big?"
"See for yourself."
"Is it expensive?"
"Adin!"
"Sorry. I'm just curious."
Their banter went along until they finally were outside the hotel gates.
Khushi called someone from her phone asked them to bring the gift.
Adin was literally jumping on the balls of his feet in anticipation.
Finally a chauffeur came from their right holding a wicker basket.
Khushi took the basket from him and opened the lid and turned towards him.
"Happy Birthday, twin!" Khushi exclaimed with the biggest smile every.
Her cheeks hurt!
