If you cast me in an independent film, it will automatically become commercial: Shah Rukh KhanSameeksha | IBNLive.com 06:22 PM IST Dec 16, 2015

Shah Rukh Khan who was recently in the capital to promote his upcoming release 'Dilwale' spoke his mind about the blurring line between commercial and parallel cinema in recent times. While speaking to IBNLive.com, Shah Rukh referred to 2015 as the year of films like 'Masaan' and 'Titli', and also addressed his incapability to do an 'independent' film.

According to the 'Badshah' of Bollywood, independent films are the ones which are high on content and made on low budget for certain audience. "If you cast me in an independent film, it will automatically become a commercial film. It won't be released in a small fashion. As soon as you have a 'star' cast in the film it hardly remains independent. Such films are made for niche audience; it's a cult film from which you try to make a different path," he said.

Giving an example, the 'DDLJ' star said that he did 'Chak De! India', for niche director Shimit Amin, but it became a commercial film backed by a big studio. Therefore, he isn't sure if he'll ever have a chance to work in an independent film.

Talking about his stardom, the superstar said that it's very difficult to balance stardom and doing a film of a different kind because the lines have blurred. "If I do a film which is extremely different, it will be measured on commercial terms. It won't be looked as a unique film that Shah Rukh did. However, it's a fortunate place because it's sold better and people come to see the film," he explained.

The 'Dil Se' star feels that maybe the way forward for such niche films would be participation of big stars without the pricing and keep the point system like that in America. "I can't tell someone to make a small film for me. I take on films that are offered to me. This year I was offered amazing array of films -'Dilwale' which is a true blue commercial, blockbuster film; 'Fan' which is very different and 'Raees' which again has a different flavour. I can't go looking for a film at this age and stage."

About the level of difficulty in a parallel and a commercial film, Shah Rukh said that both have their own challenges. He revealed, "I was telling Varun and Kriti the other day that doing a romantic number is as difficult as doing a realistic, quiet sequence. I've done both. Honestly, at my age doing the 'tom-foolery' and to convince people about it is more difficult than doing a real-life inspired scene."

A lot has been discussed and shared on social media ever since the actor expressed his views on intolerance. While addressing the media, Shah Rukh said, "I've never used social media to clarify myself. You have to take social media with a pinch of salt. Everybody has to say something or the other which necessarily needn't be the truth. It is platform to say whatever you feel like."

However, the actor further added that being a public figure makes one more responsible and one can't reply to things in the manner they've been asked otherwise.

Talking about the different car sequences in the film in and Rohit Shetty's patent style, the actor said that every director in the industry comes with his own trademark. "You'll always relate a romantic background track with a Karan Johar's film. With a shiffon sari in Switzerland you'll remember a Yash Chopra's film. We compartmentalize everyone to understand them better. But I don't think it is the right way to justify their talents, it just that they master in that particular act," he clarified.

The actor also revealed that with 'Dilwale' they have tried to bring what people love in Hollywood movies. "When you see a car chase in a James Bond film, you appreciate it and think why this can't be in our film! So I asked Rohit to create something popular of our own such as a brilliant car action sequence. With budget and stunt directors, we also have Hollywood-style action scenes too."

The 'Chennai Express' star feels that we shouldn't belittle things that our director uses again as a motive, it's a part of the narrative and we should appreciate it as something instrumental which is required in the film.

He actor was accompanied by the film's star cast including Kajol, Varun Dhawan and Kriti Sanon. When asked about working with Shah Rukh after a period of five years, Kajol said, "I love working with SRK, We try to do something different and good every time we are together and we hope we did the same in 'Dilwale' as well."

Varun Dhawan, who is just four-films old described the entire filming experience as a 'happy one' He said, "We've made this film to make everyone happy. Everything else is beyond my comprehension because I've never been a part of this big a film."
