Salilji, nice thread. If we are talking about one voice many faces , then not just Rafi Saab, yet another name comes to mind- its none other than our ever so versatile – Kishore Kumar !!!!

He has sung numerous super-hit songs for Dev Anand, Rajesh Khanna, Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, Shashi Kapoor, Sanjeev Kumar, Rishi Kapoor, Vinod Khanna , Anil Kapoor and many other popular heroes including for himself. But he has sung some evergreen songs for not so famous names as well.Let me list out some of his best melodies for these not so as popular heroes in Hindi films:

Dil Aisa Kisi Ne Mera Toda – Film : Amanush – Actor: Uttam Kumar Raat Kali Ek Khwab Mein Aayee – Film: Buddha Mil Gaya – Actor :Naveen Nischol Tum Bin Jaaoon Kahan – Film: Pyar Ka Mausam – Actor: Bharat Bhushan Aye Khuda Har Faisla Tera Mujhe Manzoor Hai – Film: Abdullah – Actor : Sanjay Khan Phir Wohi Raat Hai – Film: Ghar – Actor: Vinod Mehra Pyar Maanga Hai Tumhi Se – Film: College Girl – Actor: Sachin Haan Pehli Baar Ek Ladki Mera Haath Pakad Ke Boli Haan Re Haan – Film: Aur Kaun – Actor: Sachin Pyar Hi Jeene Ki Soorat Hai – Film: Armaan – Actor : Raj Babbar Teri Duniya Se Hoke Majboor Chala – Film: Pavitra Papi – Actor: Parikshit Sahni Yeh Jeevan Hai Is Jeevan Ka – Film: Piya Ka Ghar – Actor: Anil Dhawan Samjhauta Ghamon Se Kar Lo – Film: Samjhauta – Actor: Anil Dhawan Neele Neele Ambar Par – Film: Kalakaar – Actor: Kunal Goswami Tum Kitni Khoobsoorat Ho Yeh Mere Dil Se Puchho – Film: Jangal Mein Mangal – Actor: Kiran Kumar Dil Kya Kare Jab Kisi Se – Film: Julie – Actor: Vikram Har Koi Chahta Hai Ek Mutthi Aasman – Film: Ek Mutthi Aasman – Actor :Vijay Arora Sama hain suhana suhan Film: Ghar Ghar ki Kahani Actor : Jalal Agha Aanewala pal jaane wala hain - Film: Golmaal Actor : Amol Palekar
  1. Bhavre ke gunjan hain mera dil Film: Kal Aaj aur Kal Actor : Randhir Kapoor

There are so many more songs here too to list out..Still haven't mentioned songs for Rakesh Roshan

Adi agree with most of your post above but I dont agree with some of the names being put under category of 'Not Popular Heroes'. They would be Bharat Bhushan since he was the original jubilee man with all his films being hits. Also Amol Palekar was a popular Hero with majority of his movies also being hits like Golmaal, choti si baat, Chit chor, Meri Bewi ki shaadi,Rang Birangi. Sachin in that list is also debatable. The rest I certainly would say were not popular heroes.

I would play devils advocate and say that no doubt Rafi saab and Kishor da were the best singers of all times and have sung for all the heroes. Have many hits with all top heroes and even the not so popular ones. Thus rightly being called One Voice - Many faces.
However in the 70's & 80's (early part) the field of playback was far less conjested as compared to today. There were not many playback singers then and so there was a case of most heroes having a common voice. The same was the case in the female playback singing with only Lata and Asha ruling the roost in the 70's & 80's.
The music directors then did not have many choices available and the 2 greats at that time were Kishor Da and Rafi who were miles ahead of the rest of the pack same was with the mangeshkar sisters. There was no one to compete with them and hence they ended up singing in every movie released during those times.
Similar was the case in early 90's when there was only Kumar Sanu & Udit Narayan and hence if you see movies released from 1988 to 1995 most movies had only these 2 singers for all heroes (SPB was present in a small dose).
However today the times have changed there is lot more competition among singers and also the South singers have invaded the hindi movie scene in a big way plus there are many accross the border and even london based singers hence the MD's have a huge choice/options - KK / Shaan / Sonu / Udit / Sukhwinder / Paki Band singers / Abhijeet/ Adnan Sami etc etc.
Hence its more difficult to have a One Voice many Face scenario in today's time to the extent as in the past.
However Sonu Nigam is one singer who could be the modern answer to One Voice many faces since he has multiple hits for all heroes.

rock&roll - thanks for your post. That was a good information. Sonu certainly has achieved the same status as what Rafi saab achieved in 50s and 60s and Kishore da in 70s and 80s.
