Something changed for Lakshya after he overheard Sanskaar and Swara discussing him on the terrace. Gratitude and tenderness towards his brother, who had understood him when no one had... Love and regard for Swara for being the generous, fair-minded person she always was.
But also, seeing them together...
Lakshya had heard enough for that evening but having stayed hidden throughout their revealing conversation, he was forced to stay till they left.
After discussing him and Ragini so intensely, suddenly their mood changed like quicksilver.
Sanskaar had cocked his head to one side, and looked at Swara with a glint in his eye: "Waise, Swara Devi, if you really want to do this Ganga trip, we better do it before the divorce papers are filed. No one is going to let us travel together after that! Can you believe my coming to the baadi and saying to Maa, yes, we're divorced but we've been planning this wonderful trip along the sacred river, please let your daughter go with me as friends'. She'd kill me!"
"Haw!" laughed Swara at once, "I never thought of that! Do you think it's wrong to travel alone with you?"
She made a dismal face as she considered that, but brightened up as she dismissed the idea.
"But I couldn't be safer than with you, and plus, this is our special plan... I don't care! We'll never have a chance to do this after our talaq. By the way, I better gather all the evidence I need for the divorce - I'll place a secret camera to film your snores..."
"Hah!" he laughed right back, "I don't need evidence, I need witnesses, who will gladly testify to domestic violence against the poor husband!"
Swara stuck her tongue out and him and dragged him over to the swing again. "Chalo, finish these cookies, so that I can take the plate back downstairs."
"Jaldi kya hai, Swara, let's just sit here for a while!"
"Are you feeling cold?" he asked, after two minutes, turning to look at her.
"No, it's quite pleasant still," she replied.
"Phir apna dupatta do na? I'm feeling cold."
"What a guy!" Swara scoffed at him, unspooling the silk dupatta from her neck, "he sleeps with AC on every month of the year, and can't handle a gentle breeze!"
"That's precisely the point, Swara Devi, I like the air temperature under my control," he retorted, as he wrapped her multi-coloured dupatta tightly around himself.
Listening to them and their camaraderie, the conviction came had slowly come upon Lakshya. They might talk of divorce, but there was NO WAY that Sanskaar would let that happen. He was being very canny, thought Lakshya, so clever! As if he was taming a wild bird, he was sitting utterly still, letting her come up to him, slowly, step by step. By creating a haven of security, he was reeling Swara in with infinite patience! And for the first time, Lakshya was admiring of Sanskaar's sure-footedness when it came to Swara.
And there was another confirmation. He had known for some time now that Swara trusted Sanskaar more than she did anyone in the world, except maybe her mother and Dida. Now, with a sinking of the heart, he believed she loved Sanskaar more than she did anyone in the world, except maybe her mother and Dida.
