Part 4
It was her parents' 30th anniversary and Bhavna and Suhani decided to throw them a party at the Carlton. The manager was Yuvraj's friend's dad, so he made most of the arrangements for the sisters, and the party was a huge success. After the guests had left and as Suhani's
parents thanked their daughters, Suhani said that it was all mostly Yuvraj's doing, which pissed off her mother. With a few drinks in her, she turned to Yuvraj as everyone else drifted away and said, "You must be so grateful that Suhani agreed to marry you. My poor darling, it was terrible of Srivi to force her into it." She looked satisfied at Yuvraj's gobsmacked expression.
Much as he wanted to refute what she was saying, the realities of their life made him understand she was probably speaking the truth. His eyes searched out Suhani, and he went up to her and asked, "You were forced to marry me? Why? Why would you agree? Don't you care about me at all? Tell me," he caught her by the arms and shook her. "Tell me, I want to know."
"Shush, Yuvraj. Don't make a scene here."
"TELL ME! TELL ME! NOW!"
"Don't shout! You want to know the truth? No, I didn't want to marry you. I thought the proposal was from Sharad. I liked Sharad, not you. But I'd agreed and dad wouldn't let me take it back." She saw his expression and immediately regretted what she'd said. "Not that my feelings were serious--I don't much like Sharad now."
He walked away from her, disappearing through the French doors leading into the garden. She was surprised to find herself feeling wretched and cruel for what she'd said, but he'd pushed her, so what could she have done? What would happen now? Should she go home with her parents? But he was the injured party--well, she was too, but she'd got over it--he should decide where they went from here.
She tried to talk to him as they drove home, but he silenced her with a gesture. After he had changed, he set up the sofa bed in their room--she hadn't even known it was a pull-out bed--and silently settled there to sleep. But sleep was a misnomer--he lay wide awake, feeling shame at his stupidity, mortification at her words, and embarrassment at his expectations.
Suhani was awake too. Always privileged, she was not used to empathizing too much with others, but she did empathize with him. She had never given his feelings much importance, but she knew she had hurt him badly and she felt miserable about it. She had short-changed him from a sense of being sacrificed against her consent, when it wasn't his fault at all. She remembered his smile when she was nice to him, his trying to please her, changing for her. Not only had he left off oiling his hair and started using contacts--he was actually quite good-looking--he joined her for parties and in things she liked doing. And she was fond of him and his geeky ways; she couldn't help liking him.
When she awoke the next morning, he was nowhere around. It was a relief, actually, it was going to be awkward, and though it only deferred the moment she would have to face him again, she was glad not to deal with it right now.
