The box office result of Prem Ratan Dhan Payo has probably ended any chance the year had to improve on business compared to last year for Hindi films. The cumulative total last year was 2740 crore and giving a 200 crore nett total to Prem Ratan Dhan Payo which is the best case scenario this year will stand at 2200 crore. A shortfall of 540 crore.
There is still Dilwale to come which no doubt will do well and even if it works bigtime and does 250 crore or even 300 crore its unlikley the supporting films can make up the rest of the shortfall. It will mean three years of stagnant business as the cumulative total in 2013 was 2790 crore which is the highest ever cumulative total.
Basically films releasing on Eid, Diwali and Christmas have to emerge blockbusters to get the required numbers. A hit film is fine on a normal day but the way the box office works today, the festive release has to do blockbuster business, if not there is a good chance of an under performing year as its become very hard to record big figures outside these periods today.
