Chapter Six
"What do you think is happening inside?" Najma whispered to Aleem who leaned back against the sofa crossing his legs staring back at her.
"Tamater, did you say?" Aleem was in his own thoughts. Najma looked at him confused.
"Bhaijaan calls me tamater, yes." She nodded.
"I wonder why" He had his hand under his chin trying to think, Najma turned completely red finding his gaze on her. "Ahhh now it makes sense." Najma looked away shaking her head trying not to smile at his random conversation.
"Ahem, mission." Najma snapped at him. She watched his eyes widen before looking back at the door.
"Well, you think they have confessed?" Aleem asked her with hopeful eyes, he knew he was pushing it.
"They have only been in there for fifteen minutes. Not for months. Your sister doesn't even know she loves my brother and my brother will not confess as he is engaged to your younger sister. Oh.My.God" Najma placed her hands over her head realising how complicated it was. "Our plan is a flop, this isn't going to work. They are both bound by other relationships" She started to panic. Aleem jumped up and placed his hand over her rambling mouth and placed a finger on his lips. She blinked innocently up at him.
"Everything will be fine. Everything is complicated I know but this is your plan and I have full faith that it will work. They may not confess but they will realise that they do have feelings for each other. And then, we will work from there. I am with you." Aleem relaxed her. She nodded along with him removing his hand from her mouth and held it.
"I hope so." She breathed out. Aleem smiled finding his hand in between hers.
"I love you Zoya" Asad whispered, his lips brushing hers momentarily; Zoya's eyes snapped open realising what they were doing. She pushed him off her, Asad stumbled back a few steps. It took him a few seconds to realise what was happening and what his lips had uttered. He blinked a few times before focusing on her as the shower continued to fall over her. Her face was filled with shock and guilt at the same time. He brushed his hand over his face, this was his fault. Not hers. It was all his doing, he went close to her, he did this to her. He had no intention of getting this close to her, heck, he had no idea how close he wanted to get to her until he resolved Aaliyah situation. He stepped forward and pushed the shower button to switch it off. Zoya shivered enveloping herself with her arms, her lips quivered with her eyes overflowing.
"Zo- Miss Farooqui" Asad put his hand towards her shoulder but then fisted it and brought it back. He turned around frustrated and punched the air; all his feelings were burning him from the inside. He was controlling himself all these days, but today, how did he lose his control?
"Mr Khan, the door" Zoya's voice was quiet but he heard her. He heard her heartbeats; he heard whatever was in her heart. This silence was also saying something. Asad took a deep breath; he will just pretend this did not happen. But it did happen his insides reminded him. There is no going back Asad. Asad cursed his insides for reminding him that there is no escape from whatever he felt for her. He just confessed that he loved her. And she pushed him away.
"Yeah" He coughed trying to regain his composure. He moved towards the door and shook the doorknob. He slammed his hand against it, Zoya jumped a little. "Sorry" He looked over his shoulder, his eyes daring him to look at her but he had no courage to do so. He didn't want to get rejected twice within the same day. She slowly stepped forward towards him and stood there silently watching him. Her heart was beating frantically inside of her. Her mind was screaming at her reminding her heart that she has fallen for this man and her desire to be with him was increasing by the minute. She wanted this man in front of her; every vein in her body was pushing her closer to him. She tried to steady her breathing, she was fighting within herself. She was not aware that guilt was ready to consume her as soon as she lets her guard down.
"Aapi?" Aleem shouted from outside. Najma tried to contain her laughter. "Aapi, are you in here?" He came closer towards the door. Zoya grabbed hold of Asad's shoulder, he placed his hand over hers turning around horrified. He didn't want Aleem to come to the wrong conclusion seeing them like this.
"Bhaijaan?" Asad pressed his eyes shut hearing his sister's voice. How did she know he was here?
"I have seen his jacket downstairs, he has to be here somewhere" She pretended look around the room. Asad opened his eyes and looked down at his shirt. Damn it.
"Aapi? Where are you?" Aleem raised his voice. Zoya gulped breathing heavily. Asad nodded at her to calm her down, he resisted the urge to caress her face to relax her and comfort her.
"Aleem, we're in the bathroom. The door is stuck" Asad shouted. Zoya pressed her lips together nervously, Asad watched her as she clutched onto his shirt nervously trying to make all of it go away. Aleem and Najma hi-fived each other giggling like school children.
"We're?" Asad mentally hit his head against a wall hearing his sister's questioning voice. "Are you both in there?" She asked innocently. Damn, your cuteness Tamater. Zoya blinked at Asad, he shook his head in a no still trying to convince her that everything will be fine. He didn't realise he had his arms wrapped around her waist while she clutched onto his shirt. They were both seeking comfort from each other without realising it.
"Okay, what do you want me to do?" Aleem shook the doorknob.
"Open it obviously" Najma hit his arm.
"How?" He demonstrated his hands raising his voice.
"With a k-" He placed his hand over her mouth to hush her. He warned her with his eyes. She nodded meekly.
"Aleem, you will have to kick it down. I would have done it but it's the opposite way and I will probably do more damage to myself than the door." Asad explained still holding Zoya in his arms.
"Move back!" Aleem instructed. Asad moved away from the door with Zoya. Najma's hand went over her mouth as she looked at Aleem questioningly; are you really going to kick the door down? He messed with the doorknob unlocking it with the key before pushing against it pretending he was trying to open it. "Oh there you go" He smirked at Najma pushing the door open. He turned around and froze with Najma finding Asad and Zoya in each other's arms staring back at them. Aleem and Najma awkwardly glanced at one another with Asad and Zoya doing the same inside. They both shot off each other realising what they were doing.
"I er, I" Zoya fumbled with her words stepping forward to walk out but then realised her top was revealing too much. Instead of running out of there, she hid behind Asad. Aleem and Najma gave each other a knowing look while Asad stood there dumbfounded.
"I er have bhaijaan's jacket, one sec" She pointed one finger at them running back towards the sofa and grabbing it. "Here you go" Asad reached for it instead of Zoya before turning around and wrapping it over her. She looked up at him with teary eyes trying to stop herself crumbling. She didn't know what was happening anymore. Her head was bursting and her temperature slowly rising again. Asad's hand went over her forehead.
"Damn it." Asad glanced over at Aleem worriedly, "Her temperature" He wrapped his arm over a shivering Zoya and walked her out of the bathroom. Aleem and Najma watched as they both walked out of the office.
"What do you think happened in there?" He asked crossing his arms, grinning.
"Enough" She smiled adorably at him.
"He's taking care of my sister" He sighed.
"Tamater, dry her face" Asad passed his handkerchief that was in the car to Najma. He was shivering from the cold too. He turned the heater on and started the car. He watched from the rear view mirror as Najma wrapped her arms around Zoya trying to stop her from shaking. "Don't worry, you'll be home soon" He assured her driving as fast as he could.
"Bhaijaan, she is still shaking" Najma said worriedly, she felt guilty. This was all their planning.
"I know tamater, don't worry." He parked up outside of her house and jumped out of the car. He yanked the passenger door open and ducked his head inside to scoop her up into his arms.
"I am fine" Zoya told him, he didn't listen picking her up into his arms. She nuzzled into his neck wrapping her arms around his neck. Sanaya and her mother covered their mouths in shock seeing the sight before them. Najma casually smiled at them before closing the door in their faces. Some nosy neighbours around here.
"You're home now" Asad placed her on the bed and looked back at Najma tempted to change her clothes himself to make her feel warm again. He reluctantly walked out of the room leaving Najma to change Zoya's clothes. He smiled towards Aleem coming in through the door who rushed inside his room and brought some of his clothes for Asad to change into. He did without asking any questions. He walked out of the room as soon as he changed and glanced at Zoya's door. Aleem looked up from the sofa and smiled at him.
"Bhaijaan" Najma rushed out of the room, "I'm just going to boil some water and Aleem, grab her medicines please. She is still shivering" She ran towards the kitchen. Asad entered her room to find her sat against the headrest with the duvet wrapped around her. She looked up at him, her eyes conveyed so much. She lowered her gaze wrapping the duvet tightly around her petite frame shaking back and forth, Asad sat down on the bed next to her.
"Your hands" Asad said softly. She slowly put her hands out to him. He took her hands in between his and rubbed them in motions. Zoya watched him trying to take care of her, to stop her from shaking. She may not be feeling so warm on the outside but her heart was radiating all sorts of heat. She felt it spread all over her body. He placed his hand on her forehead, "You're so hot but I don't understand why your hands are so cold." He went on with himself. Najma pressed her lips together.
"She's so hot" Najma whispered to Aleem who shook his head at her childish joke. He leaned against the door watching the two. "Bhaijaan, here is the water bottle" Asad put his hand out to her without looking back at her. Najma did as she was told and placed it in his hand before stepping back. Zoya's eyes went over their siblings before landing on Asad's face.
"Here, take this" Asad moved the duvet and placed it on her lap before wrapping it around her again. Zoya was so drained to even question whatever he was doing. But, whatever it was, it felt good. For once in her life, she was allowing someone else to take care of her. She didn't know what happened to her when she ran into his arms from Malik, all she knew was that she felt protected and safe. And that barrier that she built around her, she felt it crumble in his presence, his proximity intoxicating her. Aleem observed his sister's face, her eyes locked on Asad's face as he fussed with her. He was definitely doing the right thing. He didn't know what he was going to tell Aaliyah but he knew she will understand.
"Let's leave them to it" Najma motioned her head; Aleem nodded closing the door behind them.
"You need to rest" Asad told her. She shook her head.
"I am fine" She whispered softly, looking away.
"You're so stubborn Miss Farooqui, you're not well. And you're saying you're fine." He spoke, disappointed.
"No, I mean... I just didn't need to lie down to rest..." Her voice trailed off meeting his eyes. Her mind went over whatever happened in the bathroom. He told her he loved her. He loved her. Asad could tell what she was thinking about, he wasn't ready for the questions that were coming his way. He waited for her to question him, but none came his way. He was wondering what was going on in her mind after all. He is definitely expecting her to lash out at him, because he had made a mistake. Him loving her was not a mistake, but telling her while he was engaged to Aaliyah was.
"I uh I'm going to sit outside" Asad pointed towards the door.
"Mr Khan, you're getting married in over a week. There is a lot of preparation left to make. I think you should go home and rest" Zoya spoke staring in one direction. Asad's eyes shot towards her, his heart stung like never before. He was horrified by what came out of her mouth. She held her breath, not wanting to look in his direction. She was in love with her sister's fiance and she wasn't feeling guilty about it when she should be digging her own grave and stepping into it. How could she? How did she allow herself to lose control of her emotions? How dare her heart cross that forbidden bridge? How dare did she enjoy his proximity? How dare did she allow her desire to take control of her heart, mind and soul for this man? Why? Why did she want this man to take care of her? Why did she want to clutch on to this man and lay her head on his chest? Because you love him. Her heart told her. I know you stupid heart. Her mind screamed. Tears streamed out from her eyes, her lips quivered. What has she done? How will she answer to Aaliyah?
"I" He wanted to wipe her tears away as he watched her breakdown internally. He watched her move off the bed stopping him from getting up. She walked towards the window; she closed her eyes trying to steady her racing heart.
"I'm sorry about today Mr Khan, I'm sorry I don't know how I lost my control and allowed such a thing..." Asad grabbed the edge of the bed. What? He stared towards her back questioningly. She lost control?
"What are you saying Miss Farooqui?" He stood up, she felt exactly the same way as him. She lost her control along with him.
"No I" She turned around to face him, "I think you should go home.. thank-" Her voice trailed off once more, his face wasn't fazed. He seemed determined now. But for what? She didn't know.
"You said you lost control" Asad reminded her, Zoya cursed herself looking away. He hadn't realised, she just told him that she did.
"No I didn't mean that..." She lied.
"Then what did you mean?" He asked her. Zoya closed her eyes counting to ten hoping he would disappear. He took a step forward, Zoya opened her eyes. Asad debated whether he should confess to her again while he waited for her answer. His heart knew no restrictions realising she might be feeling exactly the same way as him. He broke all his resolve, any promises that he made to himself. He just wanted to tell her how he felt.
"I mean..."
"You feel something for me, Miss Farooqui" Asad spoke for her.
"No" She shook her head furiously.
"I wasn't asking you, I'm telling you."
"No, I can't." She shook her head again. She knew she was in love with this man, but she wouldn't admit it. Never. Her admitting it would shatter her parent's belief in her. She was never going to let this happen. Asad laughed, but he didn't find this funny.
"You just admitted that you do." He held onto her gaze, she could pretend to go into denial but he wasn't going to let her off that easily. He knew he was being selfish, but he didn't want to marry her sister and play happy family when he was madly in love with her.
"Your brother is good" Aleem praised to Najma holding his ears against the door. Najma put her finger to her lips to make him be quiet.
"I didn't say anything like that" Zoya defended herself. What is he doing?
"You love me but cannot love me. You feel like you will be hurting your sister if you did. Because you can never be selfish. You don't want to love and let anyone else love you. That is what you said didn't you? You don't choose to fall in love, love just happens." Asad watched her face flash with a mixture of emotions; he was breaking her barriers not knowing he had already broken them. "Have you ever thought that your sister will be happy to see you find love?"
"Find love with her fiance?" She said sarcastically.
"Yes, with her fiance. Because she is not my destiny. You are" Asad said confidently.
"Do you have any idea what you are saying? Why are you even saying all of this?" She cried.
"Because I have fallen madly in love with you Miss Farooqui. Not today, not yesterday but the day I first caught a glimpse of you. I have admired and respected you for a very long time just knowing about you. I never realised you will turn out to be the woman I have been waiting for years..." Asad finally confessed. Zoya's lips trembled as more tears streamed out of her eyes.
"No no you cannot Mr Khan, you cannot fall in love with me and I cannot love you" Zoya fell to her knees. Asad joined her on the floor, he didn't like the fact that he was making her cry for her own good. He took her hands into his.
"I want to share your responsibilities Miss Farooqui. I want to be your love, your rock, your strength. I want to be the one to provide you with a shoulder to lean on, I want to share your sadness and double your happiness. I want your family to be mine." Asad didn't have a confession ready but whatever came out of his mouth was what he held in his heart. "I do not love Aaliyah, I love you" Zoya's eyes widened in shock, she took her hand back to her chest.
"Mr Khan, you got engaged to Aaliyah. You said you were happy... You" Zoya was hyperventilating. Aaliyah was her little child, and the man that she was getting her married to didn't love her.
"I said yes, for you" Asad answered truthfully, there was no going back now. His mother would be so disappointed with him right now. Aleem and Najma looked at each other, their mouths dry from the confession inside of the room.
"For me?"
"I didn't want you to fail as a parent. I knew how hard you worked to bring your siblings up, you sacrificed so much for them. She had your upbringing and values instilled into her, I didn't want to say no and fail you. You wanted this to happen" Asad had his head down by this point.
"But I haven't failed by falling in love with my sister's fiance?" She didn't know what to do.
"Miss Farooqui, falling in love is not a crime. You haven't failed anyone. Your parents would have wanted you to be happy." He tried to convince her, she was feeling even more guilty now.
"I have responsibilities" She chanted.
"That doesn't mean you cannot be happy."
"I cannot abandon them" She cried.
"You will not abandon them, you didn't that day and you won't today." He didn't know what was going through her mind. He was startled when she grabbed hold of his hand, her eyes red.
"Please don't reject my sister. Mr Khan, it isn't too late. My sister is happy with this marriage, please. I cannot take away her happiness" Aleem wanted to go in there realising she was repeating their uncle's words, Najma stopped him.
"Zoya!" Asad raised his voice, "Do you realise what you are saying? I will not be able to keep her happy."
"You can Mr Khan. You can" She pleaded. "Please, I beg you."
"Why aren't you understanding what I have been trying to tell you" Asad placed his hand over hers, "I love you."
"Please" Zoya held both of her hands up at him bursting into more tears, begging for him to marry Aaliyah. "For me, please" Her voice was full of desperation. "I cannot let his words ring true. Please, I do not want to take away her happiness. Please marry her." Asad moved back and got up onto his feet. She looked up at him with quivering lips; Asad's heart stung seeing her state.
"Are you sure?" He asked her, his tone of voice changed. "I will never be able to love her" He held her eyes momentarily before walking towards the door and yanking it open with force. Najma and Aleem sprinted in different directions.
"Mr Khan" Zoya called out faintly behind him falling backwards onto the floor.
"Tamater, I am going home. Join me outside if you want to come along" Asad's voice was cold and bitter. He didn't look at either one of them pacing towards the door. Aleem nodded at Najma to go, she waved at him running behind her brother. Aleem closed the front door and looked back towards his sister's room. He ran towards her room to find her on the floor, broken. He fell to his knees engulfing her in his arms.
Asad forcefully shut his car door startling Najma inside of the car. She bit her bottom lip nervously; her brother's temper was beyond anything today. She watched him rush inside of the house and breathed out heavily following behind him.
"Asad" Dilshad called out, but Asad didn't hear anything. He closed the door shut behind him and spun in his room. He didn't know why he was so angry at her. He knew she wouldn't embrace him when he told her that he loved her but he certainly did not expect her to beg him to marry her sister. He kicked the stool in front of him raking his hair with his fingers.
"Najma, what happened beta?" Dilshad inquired watching her come inside. "Why does he look so angry?"
"I think you should talk to him Ammi, only you can console him." Najma told her.
"But what happened?" She asked her again.
"Ammi, please just go in there" Najma pleaded. Dilshad nodded and rushed towards his room. She opened it and shut it close behind her.
"Asad?" She watched him, sat on the bed holding his head low. He looked up at his mother with teary eyes. Never has he felt so torn and confused in his entire life. Asad Ahmed Khan was not like this.
"Ammi..." Asad started, failing to find words to explain anything.
"You love Zoya, don't you?" Dilshad met his eyes. A mother's heart always understands her child's dilemma before anyone. More so, she knew he would fall in love with Zoya.
"Yes." Asad admitted in a defeated whisper.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Aaliyah?" Zoya knocked on her door before entering to find her working. "What is this? They are coming over tomorrow for your haldi ceremony. You are still working on these books." She scolded her. Aleem watched from the door.
"I have to give these to them before I go. My students need to know how good of a job I have done. Most of them passed" Aaliyah joked. Zoya caressed her hair back.
"Okay, finish this and come into my room." Zoya smiled at her. She turned around to find Aleem standing there. "Yeah if you want to, you can too" She watched his face lighten up.
"The last of the deliveries have come for today. I have placed them in the corner of the living room." He explained placing his arm over her walking her out. "The decorations look good. We'll just change those in the morning." He pointed towards the flowers. "Asad bhaijaan likes those." He watched her expressions change hearing his name. She hadn't uttered a word about Asad in the last week. She got herself busy with the wedding preparations and avoided any such topic. He thought he might see her resolve break when Aaliyah came back from the trip, but seeing Aaliyah so happy, Zoya become more determined to make this work. Deep inside, she knew she was wrong in forcing Asad to marry Aaliyah but for her sister's happiness, she will do this. She also knew Asad; he would definitely keep her happy and gradually will fall in love with her. He hated seeing her go into deep thought like she used to when their parents passed away.
"How do you know he likes them?" Zoya questioned. Aleem hid a smile.
"I met him a few days back when I went to pick out the flowers for the decorations. He had picked these." Aleem pointed. Zoya followed his direction before squealing feeling his finger tap her nose.
"Aleem!" Zoya hit his arm playfully.
"Sorry, but he did pick them" He continued the conversation; Zoya looked away hoping he didn't.
"He was asking about you" Aleem told her.
"Samihaaa!" Zoya ran towards her room seeing Samiha go hyper. Aleem shook his head; you're going to have to face this aapi, whether you like it or not. I will make sure of it.
"Aaliyah, come on!" Aleem shouted behind him so that they could chill out in their big sister's room. He was definitely going to miss her.
"Ammi, I'm not coming. You all go, have fun!" Asad buttoned his shirt. He didn't want to face Zoya.
"ASAD!!" Dilshad scolded him. "Then where on earth are you going dressed up?"
"Office" He replied.
"Oh no you're not Asad. You're going to this haldi ceremony. This was our decision to have a joint haldi and mehndi at theirs. You cannot back out now. This is for you" Dilshad tried to make him understand.
"I'm not coming Ammi" He turned around and looked at his mother.
"Asad, the guests are already here. You cannot do this to Zoya. She will be expecting you."
"She will be expecting her sister's fiance" Asad said numbly.
"Asad, get changed now. Five minutes" She demonstrated her hand. "The guests are here, we are leaving soon. I want you outside." She threatened her son with her eyes and walked out of the room. Asad breathed into his hand.
"Asalaamu Alaikum" Aleem greeted Dilshad and Najma at the door along with their guests. "Come on inside" He put his hand out for them to enter.
"Where is he?" Aleem whispered to Najma who shrugged her shoulders.
"He didn't come" She whispered back to him. He pressed his forehead.
"Najma, what was the point of everything?" He asked her smiling at the guests awkwardly.
"Can I ask you something?" She pulled him to the side.
"Yeah sure, obviously" He eyed her hand on his wrist. She removed it instantly.
"You want to break one sister's wedding for another?" She questioned him. He took a deep breath running his eyes over the decorated house.
"For Zoya aapi, I will do anything. She has sacrificed everything for us. Knowing that she is in love with your brother, there is nothing stopping me from making sure my sister gets her love. And Aaliyah would understand, she has been doing this for aapi's happiness. She didn't even look at your brother when he came to see her that day at the restaurant. She didn't even glance at the picture in the envelope. She knew our sister wouldn't make the wrong decision for her. She is our mother; I have blind faith in her. I have made a promise to give her happiness. If this means that I have to break my younger sister's wedding to a man that doesn't love her. I have no regrets. Aapi and my jeeju love each other." He smiled; she nodded at him with teary eyes.
"Where is she?" Najma wiped the side of her eyes.
"On the roof, she left all the plates out there. She will be down now, she doesn't know you're here" Aleem walked towards the guests with Najma beside him. His eyes fell on Sanaya coming in through the door. "Lord help me" He cringed finding her ogling at him. He felt like she was stripping him naked with her eyes. He did not feel safe around her; his izzat is always at risk. "Stay beside me" He pleaded.
"Huh, why?" Najma asked confused seeing him act odd. She followed his gaze towards his neighbour. She could see that her eyes were yearning for Aleem. She burst out laughing.
"It's not funny" He whined like a child.
"It is a bit." She scrunched her nose. Aleem turned to find Dilshad bringing Aaliyah out into the room; she looked absolutely beautiful wrapped in a yellow and white churidar.
"Bhaijaan came" Najma whispered looking towards the front door. Aleem looked up to find his sister carrying a plate in one hand and holding her saree pleats in the other. She was dressed in a pale yellow saree, with white flowers wrapped around her plait on one side. She looked no less than a glowing bride. He watched her skip down the stairs realising Dilshad had already come.
Asad entered the house with a heavy heart with Ayaan following behind him; the decorations glistened back in his eyes. He watched everyone busy around the bride to be. His bride to be. His heart still stung at the thought. He wasn't fussed that there was no one at the door to greet him; he didn't like anyone fussing over him. His eyes landed on her at the top of the stairs, coming down the stairs dressed in a pale yellow saree glowing like never before. She looked ethereal, too beautiful to describe making him go breathless like the engagement night. He admired the flowers wrapped around her hair, her saree perfectly wrapped around her body as her delicate hands fussed with the pleats. Her white dangling earrings sparkled in his eyes. He watched her rush down the stairs before raising her long eyelashes to meet his eyes. He observed her expressions as a gush of feelings hit her face bringing her to a standstill in the middle of the stairs. But her feet didn't stop, her flower platter dropped out of her hands as she flew down the stairs. His eyes widened rushing forward towards her and grabbing by the waist and turning with her body in the air. Zoya reached for his shoulders finding him coming towards her before wrapping her arms around his neck to stop herself from hitting the floor. They both spun around before falling on the flower bed, Zoya over Asad both clutching onto each other for dear life. Everything came to a standstill, the murmuring of the guests mellowed watching the sight before them. Aleem grinned crossing his arms and leaning against Najma. Asad breathed into her neck, his lips lingering on her skin. Zoya panted over him, her eyes closed, her heart beating against his chest. She slowly lifted her head and looked into his eyes.
