People frantically rushed out of their houses and offices as the ground shook. In the national capital, metro services were briefly halted.
Earlier USGS reported that the magnitude of the quake was at least 7.7.
According to USGS, the quake was about 196km deep and centered nearly 82km southeast of the city of Feyzabad, 48 km south-west of the town of Jarm, Afghanistan.

Earthquake tremors now in Islamabad
A 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck southern Asia on Monday afternoon, the U.S. Geological Survey said. The epicenter was 45 kilometers south southwest of Jarm, Afghanistan, near the Afghanistan-Pakistan border.
CNN teams in Kabul, New Delhi, India, and Islamabad, Pakistan, Nepal all felt strong tremors.
A USGS map showed that shaking traveled into Tajikistan as well.
The quake's epicenter was at a depth of 213.5 kilometers (132.6 miles).
There were no immediate reports of casualties and damage.

At least four people have died after an earthquake of 7.5 magnitude struck south Asia, with tremors felt hundreds of miles away.
The United States Geological Survey said the epicentre was near Feyzabad in northern Afghanistan, remote part of the country near Tajikistan.
But the effects were felt as far away as New Delhi, Islamabad and Kabul, say witnesses.
In the Pakistani capital, walls swayed and people rushed out of office blocks fearful for their safety.
Several people took to Twitter immediately afterwards, describing what had happened.
Rafi Amir-ud-Din said: "Massive earthquake in Pakistan. Buildings rocking like dolls house. Allah have mercy on us."
@CricketRebel added: "Just felt earthquake in #lahore, whole house shook for 10 seconds or most. It was by far the most terrifying quake I have felt. #Pakistan."
Sky's Sam Kiley said the eipicentre was an extremely remote part of Afghanistan where the effects were likely to landslides.
But, he added that the population was fairly small and as result casualties were not expected to be as high as some have been in the region.
The Times of India reported that strong tremors were felt across New Delhi and the national capital region at around 2.45pm local time (9.15am UK time).
Residents in Kashmir, where electricity and phone lines are apparently down, told ANI news that it was "terrifying".

The Hindu Kush mountain region in Afghanistan was rocked on Monday afternoon with 7.7 Magnitude sending tremors across Pakistan and India, including Delhi where several buildings were rattled or developed cracks.
The US Geological Survey (USGS) said the magnitude of the quake at 7.7 is similar to that of Nepal earthquake that damaged the Himalayan region in April this year.
The timing of the earthquake was put at 09:09:32 (UTC) or 02:39:32 (Indian Standard Time). The nearby cities affected included as below:
45km (28mi) N of 'Alaqahdari-ye Kiran wa Munjan, Afghanistan
48km (30mi) SSW of Jarm, Afghanistan
76km (47mi) S of Fayzabad, Afghanistan
77km (48mi) WSW of Ashkasham, Afghanistan
254km (158mi) NNE of Kabul, Afghanistan
The quake was 196 km deep and had its epicentre in the Hindu Kush mountain range located 256 km from Kabul, but Peshawar in Pakistand and Delhi in India were also jolted from the earthquake. The services of the Delhi Metro were briefly suspended around 2.40pm.
