~ CHAPTER FIFTY-NINE ~
Roli's bewildered stare was instantly transformed into a wide, dumbfounded gape as Siddhant pulled out a big, adorable basket of red roses and handed it over to Mukherjee.
"Happy birthday Roli," said Mukherjee with a warm smile as he extended the basket towards her.
She let out an almighty gasp and cupped her tunnelling mouth just like one of those stunned divas, ecstatic at having been declared winner of the Miss Universe contest.
"Oh my God!" she gasped and laughed at the same time. Her eyes brimmed with joyful tears.
Pleased at her reaction, the team applauded and bellowed with laughter. Siddhant just stood there grinning like a fool from ear to ear as he watched on. He blushed to a deep shade of red as he felt quite warm inside, happy and satisfied at the fact that he had finally managed to bring a huge smile on her face, big enough to compensate for all the tears and pain that he had given her over the days. At least, that's what he thought!
"Oh my God!" Roli couldn't control her laughter. "Oh my Gawd! I thought... I thought something else!"
"What? That your ass got fired?" joked Cabir.
This made Roli and the rest of them cackle even harder.
"We know that it was a bit tooo... too much," said Mukherjee with a pleasant smile. "But it was all worth it. Right guys?"
"Obviously!" agreed Mukti.
Having finally got a grip on herself, Roli accepted the flowers from Mukherjee with an unbelievable blush creeping up her cheeks. "Thank you sir," she smiled in exhilaration. "Thank you so much."
"Ah!" exclaimed Mukherjee and shot a quick glance at his team. "The real credit goes to Siddhant." Saying this, he gave his leading man a couple of approving pats on the back. "He's the one who came up with this brilliant suggestion."
Roli's 100 watt smile instantly faded away to a dull 40.
"Siddhant?" mouthed Dhruv in disbelief. How can Siddhant come up with something like this? Can't be.
Other curious set of eyes were on Siddhant already. Having suddenly become the centre of attraction, Siddhant quickly looked down timidly, cleared his throat and played with his ear lobe. He felt very uncomfortable.
Roli squinted at him questioningly as she held onto the basket of flowers. On one hand, she was clearly touched at his lovely gesture, aware that he was trying to make up for the damages he had made. And on the other hand, she wasn't ready to play along with any of his dramas as of yet, however sweet they may be.
As for Cabir, he simply shot a vicious glower at Siddhant before storming out of the room without even uttering a single word. The entire team gaped dumbfounded at the scene. "Cabir?" Mukherjee called after him in surprise but he paid no heed. He simply marched to the nearest window, poked his head out and looked around curiously.
"What is this guy doing?" Mukherjee wondered aloud.
Siddhant was disturbed. I think he didn't approve of my idea. He must be still mad about all what had happened.
As the team watched on, Cabir stepped away from the window, wrung his jaw thoughtfully and rolled his eyes before returning to the conference room.
"Cabir," Mukherjee sounded serious. "What's going on?"
Cabir was still lost in thoughts. "Nothing. Was just... checking."
"Checking? Checking what?" asked Mukherjee.
"Whether anything was abnormal," replied Cabir grimly.
"Abnormal?"
"Yeah," replied Cabir. "Like whether the sun rose in the west instead of the east for instance... or probably pigs flying like birds... something like that?"
The HR gang exchanged confused glances. But Siddhant got it. Cabir and his usual leg-pulling tactics. But Mukherjee was still stern and concerned at the same time. "Cabir," began Mukherjee with a deep sigh. "See look. If you need a day off to just relax... think about things... I really don't mind. Take rest and get well soon."
"Arre no boss," replied Cabir with an amused smile on his face. "I haven't lost it. It's just that... you know... out of ALL the people... SIDDHANT... had to come up with something like this! Which is... weird and AWESOME at the same time! And un-buh-lievable! So I felt like something was wrong. Like maybe there could be tortoises running around. Or probably Newton's apples were flying up instead of falling down?"
"You're a clown Cabir," laughed Mukherjee, deeply amused. The rest of them join in laughing and applauding. Siddhant's one positive and sensible move had definitely put all of them in the best of spirits. Well. Maybe not all.
"Maybe he upgraded his manual on employee motivation," Dhruv added shyly.
"Wah!" Cabir exclaimed in utter surprise. "Now it's pukka! Something is definitely wrong! I mean... Dhruv! The sweet little sixteen! Our kiddo? Has started to crack jokes?!!? And that too in public? Come here..." Cabir bustled off to Dhruv, pulled him into a tight hug and squeezed the air out of him. "Let me kill you!!"
"Ahhh! Ahhh!!" Dhruv squeaked like a mouse.
Mukti cackled like a hyena at this scene. She was clearly enjoying herself like the others.
Cabir finally let go off Dhruv. But he still had a strong arm around the poor little guy's shoulder. "But jokes apart," he continued, "let me tell you that this was an excellent suggestion! How come we never thought of this before? I say that we should do this every year!"
"Exactly," Mukti agreed. "We should make this a practice."
"For everyone," added Dhruv.
For some weird reason, Siddhant felt unbelievably guilty as he noticed that Roli was observing him closely. The bold look in her eyes told him that though she was moved at the honour that was granted to her today, she didn't approve of it only because it was his idea. He could feel a strange fluttering in his tummy as he tried to look in her eyes.
"Rightly said," Cabir agreed in unison with his colleagues. "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. Right?" That was when he noticed that Siddhant was lost in Roli's penetrating stare. "Right Siddhant?" he asked a bit louder in order to get his attention.
Startled to hear his name ringing in the conference room, Siddhant quickly looked away from Roli. "Yeah, right," he answered after clearing his throat nervously.
"Whatever," said Mukherjee in a serious tone. "My birthday's coming up next month. So you guys had better think of something good. Or else I'm going to kick your asses."
They laugh at his comment. "Alright-alright!" Mukherjee interrupted. "Let's get to the main part. The cake!"
"Ohhh the cake! I can't wait!" Cabir moaned in anticipation.
Having got his cue, Siddhant pulled out the cake box, opened it up and laid it flat out on the table. It was a lovely, tempting, Black Forest cake topped with huge peaks of white fluffy cream, glossy red cherries and a generous layer of luscious chocolate flakes.
"Mmm, that just gave me a foodgasm," Cabir rubbed his growling tummy.
"Eyuck!" Mukti slapped his arm. "You just killed my appetite."
"Come on Roli," Mukherjee urged her to start the celebrations. Siddhant offered her the knife and gestured with his eyes to cut the cake. Though hesitant at first to liaise with Siddhant for anything at all, she finally gave in to the high spirits that was in the air. She felt oddly good and embarrassed at the same time as her colleagues burst into the classic "Happy Birthday" song whilst she cut the cake. Siddhant just clapped his hands along and bit his lips. He felt too embarrassed to sing but was enjoying every bit of what was happening now.
She cut out a generous chunk and allowed the first bite to Mukherjee followed by Cabir, Mukti and Dhruv. Each of them took a bite and offered half of the piece in return.
It was now Siddhant's turn for the cake. She felt her hands go weak as he prepared to take a bite out of it. It wasn't in the best of her interests to share this kind of a moment with someone whom she loathed so much. And before she knew it, she dropped the piece with a messy plop to the floor.
"Oh shit!" hissed Cabir.
Siddhant shot his eyes up at Roli. They were filling up with a hell lot of steam by the minute. He knew that she had did that on purpose.
"Oh no," said Dhruv quietly. "That's not a good sign."
"Why? What will happen?" asked Mukti curiously.
"It's a very bad omen," he whispered fretfully.
Mukti noticed the worried look on Roli's face and snapped back at Dhruv irritably. "Seriously Dhruv, do you actually believe in this bad omen bullshit?"
"It's not bullshit," he answered with a wink.
"Really?" asked Mukti.
"It's okay guys," came Siddhant's grim reply. There was something in his tone that told Roli that he was not pleased with what had happened just now. "Not to worry. There's a remedy for that too."
Roli squinted at him in question. Remedy?

~ CHAPTER SIXTY ~
Siddhant took his own sweet time to cut out another piece whilst Roli and the rest of the gang watched him curiously. She couldn't make out what was going on in his twisted mind but she was sure that he was definitely up to another one of his evil schemes. She cringed a bit as he straightened up and moved towards her with a fresh piece of cake in his hand. As he got closer and shot his eyes up at her, she realized what he could be up to. And as if to confirm her doubts, his eyes mischievously narrowed into thin slits and the corner of his mouth curled up into a devious smirk.
Roli's curious ogle instantly dissolved into a serious, intimidating glare. She stumbled momentarily whilst taking a couple of cautious steps back. "No," she mumbled and pointed her finger at Siddhant in warning.
Amused, Cabir rolled up his sleeves and prepared for action. "Alright!" he exclaimed as he wrung his hands vigorously. "Now this is going to be fun!"
Siddhant closed in on Roli whilst brandishing the cake in his hand like a deadly weapon.
"I said no!" Roli threatened.
But Siddhant was undeterred. He simply flashed a naughty smirk at her. "Achchaaa?" he teased.
He took an almighty swipe at her face but she ducked in the nick of time with a sharp shriek and attempted to flee out of the room only to get pinned in place by Cabir. "You're under arrest," he announced in a typical cop's tone. "You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say or do can and will be used against you in a court of law."
"What the hell! Cabir!" Roli was literally senseless as Siddhant closed in with the cake.
"Nowww I've gotcha," he said in a low, husky voice.
"No! Back off! Don't!" She managed to break free from Cabir's grapple and dive to a seemingly safe corner of the room. She quickly took cover behind a chair. Seeing this, Cabir bellowed with laughter like one of those villains from old Bollywood movies. Dhruv and Mukti cheered on whilst Mukherjee just stood there and smiled like a fool. Every now and then he would warn them with a "not too loud" or a "be careful!" But they were in the mood to party.
"Ohh baby," drawled Siddhant as he cornered Roli. "Now you're really gone."
"No!" she spat in utter panic. "Back off! I said back off!"
Ignoring Roli's pleas to spare her, Siddhant smacked the cake on to her face and liberally smeared the cream all over. "Nooo! Ammaaa!! Maaa!!!" her muffled cries could be heard whistling out of the scones of cream that was getting stuffed down her throat.
All of them laughed so hard till their bellies ached, including Siddhant. It was really cute to see her squealing like a piglet.
Roli was flabbergasted. She stood there with her mouth hanging open in shock and disapproval.
As for Siddhant, he straightened up with a victorious smile, stood back and admired his brilliant work of art.
"Hang on," said Cabir and closed in on them. "We're yet to add a couple of finishing touches." Saying this, he pulled out a cherry and stuck it on to the mop of cream over Roli's nose. She was absolutely speechless and defeated that she couldn't even utter a single word.
"She looks like a clown now," snickered Dhruv who had reached the heights of entertainment.
"A clown needs big, bright lips," added Mukti. "So let me paint it."
Roli was absolutely stunned as the room bellowed with laughter once again. "Lips!!? No! Stop!!" But her protests fell on deaf ears. Mercilessly, Mukti brushed on a thick, chocolatey lips for Roli. "Ammaaa..." she wailed.
"Who asked you to hide in this corner?" asked Mukti as she laughed her heart out. "That's why all this happened."
"You just wait," Roli gnashed her teeth. "I'll show you!"
"Oooh! I'm so scared!" Mukti replied sarcastically.
"Whatever you're planning to show, you'd better show it to Siddhant," suggested Cabir to which Roli glowered viciously at him. Cabir pretended to be alarmed at her menacing scowl, took cover behind Mukherjee and cleared his throat. "I mean... he's the one who started all this."
Roli was silent as she shot her eyes up at Siddhant. She was overwhelmed with a mixed bag of emotions. She felt so good at the moment. So important and cared for that she wasn't even sure what kind of feelings she had to harbour against him. On one hand, she was so mad at this guy that she could tear him apart like a shark would do with a seal. And on the other, this lovely gesture of his had eased her up a bit and left her feeling warm in the heart. But it didn't take long for her anger to take over the reins.
And then, to add more confusion to her already whipped up thoughts, Siddhant batted a triumphant eye at her that left her paralyzed to the bone in utter shock. Her heart fluttered wildly in her chest as if accepting the ultimate defeat to his potentially fatal blinking. Did he just wink at me, she thought incredulously as she struggled to control her racing heart. It took her a moment to realize that her jaw had dropped open at his winking act.
Aware of the positive results, Siddhant smirked victoriously. As for poor Roli, she felt so embarrassed that she quickly looked away and concentrated on wiping the dollop of cream off her face.
"Let it be there baba," said Mukti, "we'll take it off for you. Don't worry."
"Haan... hum..." She mumbled in response. It was almost as if she had received a major electrical shock. She just couldn't think straight! Though the cream covered up the crazy blush that was reddening her cheeks, she felt furious and disgusted at what had just happened. I'm not supposed to feel this way. I hate him. Yes, I do. From the bottom of my heart. And never ever am I going to fall for any of his devious schemes. What the hell! What does he think of himself? Was he trying to flirt with me? Goddammit! And how dare he mess up my face!!
She was snapped out of her thoughts at Mukherjee's presence before her. He had a beautifully wrapped present that he held before Roli. "Happy birthday Roli," he said with a very warm smile.
Roli was speechless. "Sir...?" she stammered.
"Just a small gift from all of us," said Mukherjee. "Go on."
Roli was hesitant and extremely touched at the same time. The amount of love and care that was being showered upon her was getting a bit tough to handle.
"Come on yaar," Mukti urged. "What are you looking at? Just go on and take it."
Slowly, Roli accepts the gift with a big, bright smile. "Thank you sir," she said. "This really means a lot."
"Aha!" Cabir interrupted. "We're not done yet."
And so... one by one, they stepped forward and handed over their gifts, cards and hugs. Roli felt so incredibly moved and embarrassed at the same time that she just couldn't stop smiling.
Finally, it was Siddhant's turn. The moment he stepped up to her, an air uneasiness wedged itself between the both of them. It didn't take long for Roli's broad grin to dissolve into a barely visible smile. Disheartened at the sudden drop in her spirits, Siddhant puffed himself up in an attempt to look unaffected. "Umm... Ahh... Happy... birthday... Roli," he said uncomfortably.
Roli flashed one of her formal smiles which she had kept aside just for those big officials and replied in a totally unbiased manner. "Thank you so much."
Mukti nudged Cabir in the ribs and gestured with her eyes at Siddhant and Roli. The duo had backed off by now without exchanging any hugs or smooches like the others.
"Are you thinking what I'm thinking?" asked Mukti quietly as she leaned closer towards Cabir and kept her eyes on the duo.
"How will I know what you're thinking?" snapped Cabir innocently.
Mukti gave her horse-toothed sarcastic grin whilst leaning in closer. "Cabir," she began, "you know exactly what I'm talking about. So don't act smart. I'm talking about Siddhant."
"Achcha? What about him?" asked Cabir curiously.
"Don't you think that he has... changed a bit?" she asked.
Cabir observed Siddhant for a moment who just wandered around the table aimlessly whilst Roli settled down and began to open up the gifts on demand.
"Hmm... Even I thought so," replied Cabir as he scratched his jaw. "His height seems to have increased by an inch."
"Oof! Cabir!" Mukti was getting irritated now. "I'm not talking about the outer stuff. But the inner thing."
"The inner thing...?" Cabir whispered in deep astonishment.
Mukti glanced up at Cabir and realized that his mind had gone for one dirty ride.
"You know what Cabir," she gnashed her teeth in irritation. "Just go to hell!"
Cabir smothered up his loud, involuntary cackle that snorted out of his mouth whilst Mukti stomped away with rage and joined Dhruv.
Meanwhile, Roli had managed to rip through a couple of presents. Her colleagues stood around to catch a glimpse of her much awaited reaction. Each and every gift and card delighted her as she progressed one after the other. First was an expensive box of imported Swiss chocolates from Mukherjee.
"These are lovely," exclaimed Roli in delight. "I'm so damn crazy about chocolates. Thank you so much sir."
Next was a complete aroma therapy set from Mukti. Roli allowed herself to explore a couple of fragrances that made her feel instantly relaxed. "Wow!" she said in fascination. "There are so heavenly. I've always wanted one like this. Thank you so much Mukti."
"Glad that you love it darling," replied Mukti with a wide toothy chuckle.
She opened up Cabir's package next - an exquisite and expensive digital frame with pre-set animated wallpapers such as a scenic waterfall, an aquarium scene etc.
"Like it?" asked Cabir. He was leaning against the wall with his arms crossed.
"Fabulous!" she exclaimed.
Next was one packet she simply didn't want to open. If she had a choice, she would just toss it in the trash. But how could she when she was surrounded by all her colleagues? Left with no options, she picks up the pack which felt quite heavy and began to rip through the cover.
