Abhishek could have proved his mettle, but he had choosen his genre properly.
I remember watching the song "Agra Mein Hei Mashoor" in Tera Jadoo Challenge Gaya long ago. My mind invariably compared his dance with Hritik in Kaho Na Pyar Hei. Abhishek never looked fit like Hritik. His body refused to bend, even for easier steps. I felt, his father could have danced better. I totally wrote him off.

Years later when I watched "Guru", I realised what went wrong. Abhishek was not the hero material for regular commercial movies, but for arty types. He might not have flexible body, but his eyes could emote.
He was trying to be in the line of his father, "a star" (which Hritik was destined to be). But his acting pointed in direction of Sanjeev Kumar, a legendary actor but not star. Incidentally, Sanjeev and Jaya were a hit pair. Sanjeev also never had a great physique, shined in elderly man's roles being young.
Obviously, I am not equating Abhishek to a talent like Sanjeev Kumar. But if he had realised his strength and worked in that direction (like Paa), he could have proved himself to be a better actor. Instead he chose to be a side kick in commercial movies.

Each actor have their own territory. Sanjeev Kumar could not have done "Don". Amitabh could not have played Aandhi or Mausam then. Abhishek could not have done Kaho Na Pyar Hei. Hritik could not have done Guru. There is nothing wrong if Abhishek could not become Amitabh. If a nightingale is born in peacock's family and it tries its best to become the best dancer, it miserably fails. But that does not mean, it is good at nothing.
As far Aishwarya, I can't think of any roles which "only" she could have carried on.
