Seen from Cowsalya's perspective, she came to the Srivastav family as a teenage bride and all she has known was the rules by which Shanti ruled the roost. When she expects the same rules of her daughter in law she realizes she's like a double barreled drum getting knocked on both sides. Shanti is playing a nasty game and sooner or later Riya will figure out that Cowsalya is being made the scapegoat in Shanti's game and Sarla is her sidekick. She's got Rani on her side to give her the real picture and when things don't add up (let's hope CVs go down this way) Riya will awaken from her slumber and sees the truth and not just spend her every waking hour batting eyes at Shivam.
