Sri vs MD was big then. My sis was a huge Sri fan. She never liked MD. She was crazy abt Salman, like literally crazy. It started with MPK and till date, Salman is her fav. She saw HAHK only for Salman.

I myself saw this movie because of Sooraj-Salman combination.

So there are various reasons why this movie is a hit. Yes, MD was a big deal then, but there were many Salman fans, many SPB-Salman fans, many admirers of Sooraj movies and yeah, that was the time when all this sweet family drama was very much appreciated. End result: Huge blockbuster!
