~ CHAPTER THIRTY-THREE ~

"Goo-ood Morrr-ning people!" Cabir's rich, pleasing drawl filled up the department. The usual chocolate brown leather bag strapped over his shoulder and dark blazer hung loosely over his forearm arm indicated that he had just returned after completing a gruelling task under the hot sun. But this never seemed to darken his spirits or alter his personality in any way. He was always the same cheerful and level headed guy.

"Morning Cabir," Mukti was expressionless and lost in her work as she mumbled the words. Her eyes were fixed in a wide stare on the computer screen whilst she expertly rattled away on the keyboard.

Dhruv flashed a V-sign which Cabir promptly returned with a "hey kiddo" before heading to Siddhant's cabin with a transparent folder tucked under his arm. Unlike the usual energetic air that greeted him from the cabin, he was welcomed by a dreary Siddhant slouched over his chair like a water bag.

"Good morning Siddhant," he greeted in his usual merry tone, "everything okay?"

"Hey," Siddhant replied with a weary sigh and wrung his eyes as he straightened up. "Yeah buddy," he groaned and took a deep breath.

"Sure? You look like shit." It wasn't just concern but curiosity. Cabir knew that Siddhant was one train that wouldn't get derailed so easily. It had to be something unbelievably massive enough to knock him over.

"Nah," he lied groggily. "I'm okay. You tell me, what's happening?"

"Happening-happening!" chanted Cabir and slapped the folder right before Siddhant, "there you go. All issues cleared. Now those guys are through."

"Oh great! Excellent!" Siddhant looked bored as he pulled out the papers from the folder and began to inspect them while Cabir settled down on the visitor's chair.

Cabir scrutinized Siddhant cell by cell. From the vacant look in his eyes and the pronounced uneasiness, his well-greased senses could detect that somewhere, something had malfunctioned seriously!

Siddhant, whose eyes had wandered away for a while, came to rest on Cabir momentarily. An unpleasant chill travelled down his spine as he realized that he was being observed. To cover it up, he passed a dry, uncomfortable smile and returned his attention to the file. "What're you looking at?" he asked with a soft chuckle.

"Nothing," replied Cabir with a hand resting on his chin, "you know... you look a bit confused. Like something's eating away at you."

"Eating away," Siddhant sighed with a sarcastic grin, "maggots I suppose."

"Love maggots." Cabir shot back and leaned onto his chair with a loud creaking noise.

"Love maggots?" asked Siddhant quietly with an eyebrow raised in question. Simple words from Cabir. Yet, they made something detonate within Siddhant with a shuddering BOOM.

"Love maggots." Cabir repeated slowly and clearly. "That's what chews you away from inside. Makes you confused. Lost. Drowned in questions. That's the first step."

"What first step?" Siddhant's chest was thumping now and yet he managed to shrug it off with an amused grin. It was like Cabir could read his mind. But the problem was... Siddhant himself couldn't understand what was going on with him.

"The first step of falling," he replied, "head over heels."

Siddhant passed a sarcastic smile and shook his head in disagreement. "Give me a break," he chuckled.

"Oh you do really need that," smirked Cabir. "But jokes apart. You don't seem like yourself. Care to share?"

Siddhant's mind raced like a Ferrari. If Siddhant Bhardwaj was Mr. Perfect then Cabir Dhawan was Mr. Hawk Eye. He was the one with a special set of powerful eyes. Powerful enough to penetrate any kind of veil one could use to mask oneself.

On several occasions, he had noticed that Siddhant wasn't what he seemed like from outside. There was something curious going on within the monster which he yearned to dig up and examine. Siddhant too, had on several instances experienced Cabir's hawk eye power attempting to penetrate the barricades he had built around himself, which in turn made him feel a little bit insecure.

"Actually..." began Siddhant and swallowed up his words. He was disturbed indeed. The Chinese lantern dream had shaken the foundations of his beliefs really badly. The way Roli made him feel lately made him so confused. He wasn't even sure what he felt. Why do I feel that something is going to happen? Something massive! Is it a sign? Mostly, he simply couldn't figure out why on earth he had to dream of her. And that too in Naina's place. What could it possibly mean?

"Actually what?" Cabir probed curiously.

"Nah leave it," he lied abruptly having lost his desire to delve further into the matter. Though he did respect Cabir, he didn't have the nerve to share his deepest secrets with him.

"No tell me," Cabir urged him, "don't be shy."

"I'm not shy." But Cabir's words did make Siddhant a bit rosy in the cheeks.

"Deny all what you want buddy," Cabir had a crinkled smirk on his face, "but your eyes never lies. And your face too. So tell me. What is it?"

"Nothing special. It's just..." Siddhant did a good job of covering up his anxiety. He was figuring out a way to present it to Cabir without attracting doubt.

"Go on," Cabir was encouraging and freely leaned back onto his chair.

"I was wondering... whether it could be true or it's just... you know something like that..."

"Bro..." Cabir rested his chin on his hand. "You really need to stop beating around the bush."

"Okay, yeah." Siddhant shook his head and attempted to compose himself. "You know... I was just wondering... Whether dreams had early in the morning could you know... come true? What do you... think about that?" Siddhant pretended to appear uninterested and busy with the documents whilst he secretly wished that Cabir wouldn't get any funny ideas.

"Dreams!" Cabir seemed to be very amused with the topic. He leaned in closer and flashed his eyebrows at Siddhant. "Why? What did you dream about?"

"M-me? I didn't dream of anything!" Siddhant passed off a defensive chuckle. "I was just asking... Just curious you know..."

"Hmm." Cabir seemed to be thinking. "You know what Siddhant? The fact is that... It does indeed come true."

WHAT! That's what Siddhant wanted to scream. But he bit his lip in an attempt to keep it in. "R-really?" he stammered whilst trying to keep his anxiety at bay.

"Yeah, I've experienced that before."

"Is it?" Siddhant was curious now. He was also worried. If early morning dreams did come true... then did that mean... That this dream could also come true?

"Uh-huh. For instance... during my school days, I had a dream early in the morning." Cabir seemed to light up visibly as he began to dwell in old memories. "I dreamt that I was on stage. Before the entire school. Playing the drums. And guess what? That really happened!"

"Really?" Siddhant was intrigued. "That's interesting! I didn't know that you could play the drums."

"Actually many of them don't." Cabir winked and leaned back onto his chair. "But here's the catch about early morning dreams. If you share the dream with someone, you can stop it from happening. And if you don't, it's going to happen."

Siddhant's chest pounded like a drum. Share the dream, save yourself. Keep it and get screwed. What was he supposed to do? How on earth can he share this? And with whom?

"So tell me Siddhant," From Siddhant's wary eyes, Cabir could make out that he did indeed have a dream which could not be shared. "What did you dream about?"

~ CHAPTER THIRTY-FOUR ~

Cabir clenched his lips in an attempt to bite back the smile which was forcing its way out. He was absolutely loving it - the way Siddhant twiddled with the papers in his hands whilst debating with the voices in his head on whether to share the dream or not. On how his frantic eyes darted back and forth in his head.

"So?" Cabir broke the silence.

Siddhant passed a quick sheepish grin. "Ermm... well... there's this... friend of mine..."

"Friend." said Cabir with an eyebrow raised. No. It wasn't a question. Rather a sarcastic yeah, right.

"Yeah, friend," Siddhant confirmed as he fidgeted a bit.

"Okay," Cabir leaned onto the chair and rested his chin over his knuckles. "Go on."

"So... he had this dream... early in the morning." Siddhant paused for a moment to check out Cabir's expression. He was listening closely with a huge pique of interest written all over his face. "That he was... kissing... a girl."

"Kissing a girl." Cabir repeated in a low not-so surprised voice. "That's it?"

"Mmm." Siddhant mumbled in reply with a slight nod.

"So what's so bad about that?" asked Cabir. "It'll be awesome if it comes true."

"Yeah, but... the thing is that he's already in a relationship."

"Oh okay. I see?" Cabir was getting more and more intrigued. He definitely knew that Siddhant's story wasn't entirely true. There was a catch somewhere.

"And... the girl he was kissing... was someone else." Siddhant finally looked up at Cabir after a long time.

Cabir seemed to be thinking something. "And does he know this... girl? I mean... like in real life?"

"Yeah. He does."

"Hmm. That's interesting." Cabir's eyes sparkled as he watched Siddhant fiddling with the papers again. He wasn't looking up at Cabir anymore. "So... how's he with this... girl... in real life? Does he love her? Like her? Hate her?"

"I don't know," came Siddhant's abrupt reply which surprised himself more than anyone else. How can I not know? Of course, I hate her! "I mean... I think he hates her."

"You think he hates her." Repeated Cabir.

"Uh huh," mumbled Siddhant.

"And you dreamt that you're kiss--- I'm sorry. I mean he dreamt that he was kissing that...girl?"

Siddhant had this weird feeling that Cabir made that mistake on purpose. "Yeah," he replied quietly.

"Okay," said Cabir with a sigh as he folded his arms and leaned back onto his chair.

Siddhant grew more restless with Cabir's silence. He wanted some kind of closure. Some kind of assurance that he's on the safer side. "So..." Siddhant finally spoke up, "what do you think? Will it... come true?"

"Oh no," replied Cabir with an assuring wave of his hand, "now it won't come true. Provided that he had that dream."

"What-what do you mean?" Cabir's words gave Siddhant a potentially fatal cardiac arrest.

"I mean... if he was the one who had that... dream, then he's safe. It won't come true. But if someone else had it, then it's going to come true."

Siddhant could feel his temper flaring. "What do you mean someone else had it?"

"No, just saying..." Cabir shrugged with an amused smile. "I mean... when he told you about his dream... he could have been telling about someone else's dream, right?"

"What?" Siddhant frowned irritably. "Now what are you getting at? You sound like I was telling you about my dream!"

"Whoa-whoa! Chill-chill!" Cabir rose to his feet and delivered a couple of reassuring pats over Siddhant's shoulders. "I was just pulling your leg man. Then why do you have to blow your lid?"

"Yeah, whatever," mumbled Siddhant and irritably stuffed the papers into the file.

"But jokes apart," continued Cabir as he sank into his chair once again, "this dream does carry a significant meaning. A sign."

He had Siddhant's attention now. "A sign?" asked Siddhant in anticipation.

"Yes," replied Cabir. "You see. Dreams are a product of your subconscious mind. It's a reflection of your daily life. Your emotions. Your desires. Frustrations et cetera et cetera. Dreams intend to teach you something through symbols. Sometimes it shows you the future. Sometimes it could be a fragment of your past. And sometimes, it shows what your heart desires the most."

What the heart desires the most. All of Cabir's words began to penetrate deep in Siddhant. His head felt heavy and his chest was thumping. Is this what my heart desires? But why her?

Shows you the future... how can she be my future? No... it's not possible when I hate her so much.

A fragment of my past... teaches me something... How... what?

Cabir waved his hand before Siddhant's eyes. "Hello? Anyone home?"

Siddhant snapped out of his trance and went red instantly. "Yeah, sorry. Was just thinking something."

"Bro! Don't get so tensed," said Cabir as he prepared to leave, "after all... it's his dream."

Just then, a robust but average statured man in his mid-forties walked in. He was clean shaven and wore a pair of brown rimmed glasses. Compared to him, Cabir was much taller and Siddhant was like a monster. "Boys?" The man was Mr. Mukherjee, the Human Resources Director.

"Sir?" Siddhant was surprised at Mukherjee's sudden apparition. "When did you come?"

"Just arrived this morning," he replied, "how's everything?"

"All good," Siddhant answered, "as usual."

"Excellent!" Mukherjee drew in a breath of fresh air. "Gather up the team for a meeting in the conference room. Ten minutes."

"Sure," replied Siddhant.

On his way out, Mukherjee paused to give a friendly slap on Cabir's shoulder. "Cabir, what's up man?"

"Grand as usual sir," Cabir replied with his crinkly smile.

"Good, I'll see you in a while." Saying this, Mukherjee hurried off to his cabin which had been locked up for days.

Siddhant stepped out to call in the team. But when he did, a gut wrenching sight met his eyes.

Roli and Dhruv were huddled quite close to each other and was engaged in a heart to heart conversation. The lad seemed to be having a tough time in controlling his laughter whilst Roli leaned in close and whispered into his ears.

Siddhant's heart pounded hard in his chest, firstly out of fear then... anger. Shit. I think... that she must be telling him... everything... Everything that she saw! That's why he's laughing!

Siddhant was boiling over with rage. His hands clenched into a tight fist as he glowered at an unsuspecting Roli who kept on cracking her jokes to Dhruv. It seemed like the boy would fall out of his chair laughing. You're so screwed. Both of you. And Roli... you... I won't spare you. I promise.

~ CHAPTER THIRTY-FIVE ~

Dhruv groped his aching tummy, leaned far back onto his chair and laughed his heart out. "Stop!" he begged through tears of laughter. "No more! Please! Stop! Oh my God! I can't breathe!"

Roli too was grinning from ear to ear. "Arre! Look at you! Laughing like a lunatic! So just imagine how I felt at that time. I was so stunned when I saw him like that!"

Dhruv was redder than a beet as he struggled to catch his breath. "Stop! Oh God! I don't believe this! This is too much! Hahahahahahaha!"

Siddhant's furious growl was enough to snap Dhruv and Roli out of their wonderland. "If you guys are done with your chit-chat session then do let me know. Because Your Excellencies are kindly requested to present yourselves in the conference room for an important meeting."

The minute Roli looked into his red glowering eyes, she knew that she was in big trouble! Oh great, now this was all what was needed. A situation which would make this terrorist think that I shared his... Ugh... whatever with Dhruv... Wow! I should be so happy! Now my day is complete!

"So if you may please," said Siddhant with a sarcastic bow.

Roli felt her guts churn violently at the look on his face. His nostrils flared as he seemed to be gnashing his teeth behind clenched lips and his jaw throbbed visibly!

"Guys," Cabir called for everyone's attention as he picked up his notepad and headed to the conference room, "come on. Let's move it. Meeting. Conference room."

Mukti got up from her workstation and tagged along with Cabir while Dhruv wasted no time in taking cover right behind the other two and slithering away to safety. Just as Roli was about to follow their cue, someone blocked her path. Siddhant Bhardwaj.

She felt cornered in front of his towering figure and wished that the others wouldn't have left so soon. His face was distorted into an ugly scowl and he had that murderous glint in his eyes. "Had fun?" he asked in a low but harsh voice.

Roli's eyes were wide with horror. She opened her mouth to justify herself but Siddhant stopped her with a wave of his hand. "I warned you," he snarled, "I warned you and yet you dared to mess with me. Now just wait and see how I deal with you."

*******************

The HR meeting comprised of six members - Mukherjee, Siddhant, Cabir, Dhruv, Mukti and Roli went forward pretty uneventfully. They discussed about the current state of the company, its issues and resolutions.

Throughout the meeting, unnoticed by Roli, Siddhant kept observing her from the corner of his eyes. She knew his secret. Shameful secret. And he was at risk of being exposed. Taken advantage of! I must not let it happen.

And then, as if to confirm his greatest fears, he saw it!

Roli momentarily looked up from her notepad to pass a coded smirk to Dhruv which he in turn, returned promptly. There was something in their eyes that made Siddhant's chest pound like a jazz drum! It looked as if they were trying to remind each other of the subject they were laughing over just a while ago. Yes. She did indeed tell him. I heard her too! I was so stunned when I saw him like that!

Siddhant had an iron grip on his pen as he struggled to keep in his rage. He just couldn't wait for this meeting to get over!
