~ CHAPTER TWENTY-SIX ~
Manik woke up with a start from his horrifying nightmare. It took a moment for him to register what was happening before he blindly groped for his cell phone and turned off its disgusting alarm. It had been ringing relentlessly for a while now and was pissing him off big time!
Manik sat up with a long groan and rubbed the stiff nape of his neck. His eyes were still screwed shut and he felt dry and groggy.
His kiss with Nandini... came rushing back into the darkness of his eyes. Her beautiful face which glowed under the orange hue of the mystical lanterns simply wouldn't go away. Her large, gorgeous eyes seemed even more magical than he had ever noticed. As for her warm, passionate kiss, that was something he had accidentally experienced before.
"Aww man, I don't believe this," he groaned and ruffled his hair, "now she has started to haunt me in my dreams. This can't be happening."
But admit it, said his heart, that kiss played the right notes. Yeah?
Manik hissed irritably, picked up his towel and headed to the bathroom for a shower.

It was 6:45 in the morning when Dhruv turned up for work. But Nandini had already beaten him to it. The lights in the filing room were on and there was the constant ruffling of papers.
"Nandini?" Dhruv craned his neck into the filing room. "In so early?"
Nandini, who had heard Dhruv come in through the department's door wasn't startled with his sudden apparition in the filing room. "Aren't you supposed to say good morning?" she asked with a cheeky grin.
"Sorry," he chuckled and made his way in, "good morning. When did you come in?"
"Six-thirty," she stated stiffly, "as discussed last evening."
"As discussed," Dhruv repeated with a sheepish grin. He felt amused at the words she chose to use.
"Yep, as discussed," she snickered.
"Achcha, tell me, had your breakfast?" Dhruv gathered up a pile of papers and began to sort them.
"So early in the day? You got to be nuts!" Unlike Dhruv, Nandini seemed to be having trouble in doing two things at a time. She fumbled with the papers and the stapler.
"Well, out here it's best to eat whenever you get the chance," said Dhruv with his eyes on his work, "because once the Manik Malhotra comes in then you won't even get to breathe." Nandini could notice the extra care Dhruv took to blend in his hatred whilst talking about Manik.
Nandini's mind was already racing now. From the riot that could happen once Manik popped in to the discussion she had with Navya last evening. "Dhruv..." she began hesitantly.
"Hmm?"
"Can I ask you something?" she said quietly.
"Sure."
"If an employee resigns soon after joining, then is it necessary to serve notice?"
"Well," Dhruv began in a casual tone, "it actually depends on what's mentioned on the offer letter. But generally, if an employee resigns during probation, he or she has to serve a week's notice."
"A week!!?" Nandini's chest was thumping now. Before she could stop herself, she blurted out the one question that had been troubling her since last evening. "Then why did he ask me to serve a month's notice?!!?"
"Who?" he looked up at Nandini with questions in his eyes.
"Uh..." Nandini realized that she just spoke out her mind. "Manik... he asked me to serve a month's notice. I had put in my resignation yesterday. Verbally at least."
"What are the terms in your offer?" Dhruv enquired curiously.
"It mentions a month's notice," she replied, "but there's nothing mentioned about probation."
Dhruv sighed and nodded his head in disbelief. "When you make a deal with Manik, you need to be extra careful."
"But my question is... I resigned on the first day itself. So why should I serve notice? I mean... I don't have anything to hand it over. So why should I work that long?"
Dhruv began to respond but stopped dead as the loud bang of the department's door followed by hurried footsteps caught their attention. He glanced at this watch. 7:00 AM. "Probably Cabir," he mumbled.
But their conclusions were shattered as a bustling Manik stopped by the filing room and asked, "What are you guys doing here?"
