"Mummy..Do you know who is the prettiest in this picture?", a five year old Mahi asked Geet..
"Who Mahi?"
"You! Look how nicely you are smiling!",she stated and continued looking lovingly at the photo of Geet and her friends,taken during Geet's college days.
Mahi.The reason for Geet's existence. Had it not been for the little girl,she would not have known what to do with her life after her husband's death. Kabir Sharma,the love of her life,her college sweetheart.
He lost his life in a plane crash,when he was returning home to Geet and a seven month old Mahi,after attending a conference in Dubai. The news left Geet shattered and she has not gotten over the tragedy, even after 4 long years.
Mahi was very small and so did not really remember the time she spent with her dad. To her,her mother was everything.
Geet had decided to continue living in her place,the place that she had bought along with Kabir, soon after their wedding. She did not want to be subjected to all the sympathy from neighbours and others and so declined the offer to move back to her mother's place.
She had studied fashion designing and now owned a boutique close to her house, that was slowly but steadily gaining popularity..
Her routine was , get up early morning, have breakfast and make Mahi eat hers,pack lunch for them and leave for her boutique..stay till evening,go to the park after work and spend some time for herself and go back home when it was time for dinner..
It was one such evening in the park where Geet and Mahi were sitting on a bench,with Mahi looking at Geet's college album and Geet lost in thoughts ,looking at passers by. She wasn't really concentrating on what Mahi was saying but the little girl didn't seem to care..she always had the energy to keep talking non stop whether the other person listened to her or not ..so Geet stuck to acknowledging whatever Mahi told her,occasionally.
Maan Singh Khurana's car had experienced a break down while he was on the way back home..the driver was busy trying to figure out what the problem was. Maan tried to work in the car but it was a warm day and he started feeling restless..he looked out of the window to see a park right across the road..He informed his driver to get the car fixed and pick him up from there and proceeded towards the park.
He walked towards the benches and sat in one of them,the one next to the girls'..he settled with the laptop and resumed typing on it..He got a call from his assistant Adhi and he switched on the Bluetooth and started talking..
One of the photographs flew from Mahi's hand and fell near the bench where Maan was sitting..she slowly got down from her bench ,walked close to Maan and picked it up..
She looked up to see Maan talking..she had no idea about the Bluetooth so she was confused as to whom he was talking to..
"Haan Adhi, send the blueprints now..once I approve them you can fix the meeting with Mr Chopra"
Maan saw a cute little girl, in a white frock,looking at him with a confused look on her face..She was adorable and he wanted to see her smile..
Mahi poked Maan's hands and looked at him with wide eyes..
"Adhi I got to go,you send them,bye"
"Yes , how can I help you little princess?"
"Mummy yay! This boy , no no this uncle called me princess!", Mahi exclaimed all excited and only then did Geet realise that Mahi was not beside her..
"Mahi! What are you doing there? Come here!" she called her..she had told Mahi not to talk to strangers but her daughter didn't seem to listen.
She then looked at Maan..he seemed sophisticated..suited up , working on a laptop and having a Bluetooth device on his ear..still, he was a stranger and Mahi can not talk to strangers!
"Mummy wait! I have a question to ask him. Two minutes",she said and showed the first two fingers of her right hand,indicating what she meant.
Maan found Mahi too cute but he knew that her mother was getting mad..her mother..it was hard to believe that the smart,young and beautiful woman had a four or five year old kid !
"Why were you talking to yourself ? You don't have friends? You know? I have many friends! Akshaj,Ahaan,Nikita,Disha.. See,so many!" Mahi said,counting the names of her friends..
Maan started smiling which slowly became a grin and when she finished he burst out laughing..Geet was amused at Mahi's question.. She never really talked to random people about her friends or anything for that matter..She always looked at Geet for permission before she proceeded to talk.This was different.
"I was not talking to myself Princess. Do you see this?", he showed the Bluetooth to Mahi .." I was talking through this..do you know what a phone is ?"
Mahi slowly nodded, she had seen Geet use her phone ..
"This is something like a phone", he tried to explain in the simplest of terms..."but I don't have friends..you have SO many friends..will you be my friend?"
Mahi loved making new friends..She liked this new uncle..and she nodded excitedly..
Maan extended his hand forward and Mahi shook it..
Geet was all the more surprised with this..she could see Mahi developing a liking towards this stranger and he also seemed to like her kid..he seemed genuine but you never know..
"What's your name ?" Mahi asked him..
"Okay Mahi enough..let's go", Geet said , scared at how the conversation was progressing..
Maan could sense her fear but he wanted to tell her who he was ..
"Maam just a minute.. I know I am a stranger and it's not good to let kids talk to strangers but I mean no harm and my intentions are good.. I find this kid adorable and I am happy to have met her today..I don't know if you know me but I am Maan Singh Khurana, owner of the Khurana constructions..just a minute"..Maan said , got his laptop and showed her his website and his photo from the gallery section, justifying his statement..
Geet had heard a lot about the Khurana's..they were a part of the elite crowd..She had no idea he owned the group..
"Oh! Nice to meet you Mr Khurana..I have heard a lot about your group and your achievements.Congrats and Good luck" she said genuinely.
Maan turned to Mahi.."My name is Maan, princess.. You are one special friend I will always remember..take care", Maan said and placed a kiss on the kid's cheek."Bye"
"Bye Maan uncle", she replied and turned to go home with her mother..
Days passed and Maan always had a smile on his face whenever he thought about his little friend.
One afternoon , Maan's dadi and Annie decided to go shopping for Annie's birthday..they went past Geet's boutique and Annie loved a dress that was displayed near the glass door.. She wanted to go in and look at the dress as so the ladies went in..
Geet showed them all the designs that she had and Annie loved many of them..She could not stop praising Geet and was all the more excited when Geet told her to come next week if she wanted to,as she would have some new designs ready and Annie could select the color in which she wanted them to be stitched..Dadi liked the girl and her shop..The quality and material of the clothes that she had to offer,were extremely good.
"What's your name beta? Btw..Why don't you open a bigger store Beta? For clothes of such quality and the beautiful designs,you will be able to attract a lot more customers don't you think ?"
"Probably yes ma'am but I am not planning on expanding for now..Maybe sometime in future..and I am Geet",Geet said and gave her a small smile..
"There is something about this girl..She is different somehow ", Dadi thinks to herself
"Mummyyy.. Blue or yellow ? Which color is better for Elsa's dress?", called an excited Mahi, running towards Geet with her 'Frozen' colouring book in her hand..
"Blue Mahi", Geet replied and Mahi went to a corner and sat down to finish her colouring.
"She is such a cute girl.. How old is she beta?" Dadi asked Geet
"She is turning five this November", Geet replied with a smile..
"Wow this cute kid is your daughter! You look so young and pretty ",Annie complimented Geet..
Geet smiled politely but her expression changed instantly when Dadi asked "What does your husband do beta?"
"He is no more".. she said in a small voice.. It was Dadi and Annie's turn to be shocked.. They did not know what to say next.. She was so young and she was a widow..how hard it must be for her to not break down and be strong for the kid.. Dadi knew that she should not express sympathy at this moment because she had gotten frustrated when people gave her sympathetic looks and 'I am so sorry' over and over again,soon after her husband passed away.. So she just said what she knew best " You are a strong girl Geet! I see a spark in you .. You sure will achieve many good things in life .. Be proud of where you are now,it's not easy..May God be with you always!"
Geet felt good after hearing the old lady say that..it was not the usual 'I am so sorry for your loss' and that was a change..She knew people genuinely felt bad for her but it was hard to hear that.. So she nodded slowly to what the lady said ..Annie saw that and gave her a small smile,which Geet returned..The ladies then left,promising to come next week..
Dadi and Annie spoke about Geet during dinner.. The mention of a kid brought back Mahi's memory to Maan..
"What was the kid's name Annie? Mahi right? Such a sweet kid.. I am so proud of Geet for managing everything alone"
"Mahi? How old was she Dadi?"
"She is turning five this November it seems Maan ,why?"
"I think it's the same kid", Maan said and narrates the episode from the park..
"Oh so you have met them already.,"
"Yes Dadi..and why did you say she is managing alone?"
"Her husband is no more Maan"
"What?! What are you saying Dadi.. Oh no that's so bad! And I am supposed to be Mahi's friend and I have done nothing to make her happy"
"Yes Maan very unfortunate.. Okay then why don't you wait for her in the park and meet her again?"
"Good idea Dadi..I will do that tomorrow "
Maan went to the park the next day hoping to see Mahi there.. As expected she was there playing with her toys and telling something to her mother.Mahi was all excited to see him...Geet, acknowledged his presence and let Mahi play with him , now that she knew who he was .. She also learned from him that the old lady and the girl who had visited her store were Maan's Dadi and sister..
Maan and Mahi became very close and a day didn't go by without Maan sparing atleast half an hour to play with Mahi..he rescheduled all meetings that clashed with his 'Mahi time'
Geet liked the bond they shared and Maan became her very good friend whom she started to trust over a period..she told him about Kabir ,how they fell in love and how wonderful her life had been.. She even went to Maan's place to meet Dadi and Annie couple of times.. Dadi had an idea in her mind which she told Maan one day .."Maan..You love Mahi and Geet is your good friend now..Why don't you marry her Beta? She is very young and it will be tough for her to live alone throughout her life .. You can support both of them no Maan..What do you think?"
"Dadi..honestly speaking I don't have any problem with this idea..I will only be too glad to spend my life with Geet and Mahi..but I am not sure how Geet will feel about this"
"Try asking her Maan..I feel it will be better if you talk directly rather than my interfering "
"Okay Dadima..I will wait for the right time and talk to her "
Few days later,Mahi had gotten her admission in one of the most reputed schools in the city..Geet was very happy and Maan sensed this to be a good time to talk to Geet about what Dadi had told him..
They are in the park with Mahi playing in the slide nearby and Maneet sitting on a bench watching her..
"Geet..I have to talk to you about something "
"Sure Maan what's it?"
"Do not get me wrong..I have only both of your best interests in mind when I say this..Just hear me out okay?"
"Umm..okay Maan.."
"..Geet..you are one amazing,strong and an independent woman, and I respect you and have been inspired by your outlook towards life..in few years,Mahi will start missing a father figure and that is not a good feeling to grow up with ,trust me I know how that feels.. This is just a suggestion..I would like to offer my support to both of you ,till I live.. It is tough to manage alone in the long run Geet and I am not expecting anything in return ..I just want to be there for both of you..I know you love Kabir a lot and you will always love him..but I will try my best,every single day,to keep both of you happy..will you marry me Geet?"
Geet did not know how to react.. Maan was her very good friend and yes practically,what he said did make sense..but would she be doing injustice to Kabir by marrying Maan? No she can't do that to him..
As if he sensed her inner turmoil ,Maan replied "I know you are unsure bcause you think you will not be doing justice to Kabir..but trust me I will not force you in any way to not think or talk about him..he is such a nice person from what you have told me and I am only feeling bad to not have met him..he is your first love and I know nothing can change that..I am ready to accept you that way Geet.."
Geet knew she could trust him..Kabir will never be forgotten and Maan will make sure of that..she knew she had to think about Mahi and not just her and Mahi loved Maan..this seemed like a good idea..so she was ready with her answer.."Yes Maan , I will marry you..you read my mind when you told what you told about Kabir..but you are also right about Mahi missing a father figure and we both know she loves you..I cannot promise to be a good wife right from the beginning so give me some time to get used to it..I will be a good friend for sure "
"That will do ", Maan said with a wide smile and they called Mahi to inform her of their decision .."Princess.."

"Small correction..it's not Maan 'uncle' anymore it's going to be Maan 'papa'!"
"What? You are going to be my Papa? Like how Nikita and Ahaan's papas take them out to the beach and to picnic you will also take me ?"
