How to make content based films work at the BO
Serious darker themes films tend to be go unnoticed at the BO though makers recover some of their investments but distributors lose out.Films like drishyam which has been appreciated but hardly breaking even

1. Budget it has to be strict for e.g. with a star like HR a film budget cant got over 75cr if ajay it cant go over 55-60cr.

2. Select an appropriate star suited to the script with decent BO pull for this kind of genre

3. Overseas Market like USA got a good market for this kind of film so good chunk of promotional time should be devoted towards promoting overseas.

4.Solid promo will rise the interest in the movie goers

5.Skillful director is a must orelse a mediocre director will destroy the film even if the script is worldclass

5.Music is very important should have soulful album like talaash etc which gives an extra push

6.Strike a better deal with Mutliplex chain and try to recover from satellite rights rather than pushing to multiplex for more share.

7.Good WOM need to be spread like wildfire and will def help the film trend well for a long time

7.Release date, surely these kind of film wont find themselves a big holiday. So releasing during summer holidays and has proved to be fruitful. atleast 2 open weeks is imp and good open weeks will have the WOM take over and strike gold

Controlled budget, good trailer and good release strategy are the most important factors.
It helps if the film is lighthearted and also has some successful music.
And ofcourse final product has to be good.

Life is already Messier, so Entertainment Loving Audience ignore this kind of cinema as wohi life ka rona dhona on screen kya dekhna.

I lack knowledge in movie business but as a viewer I enjoy watching good movies. The word 'good' itself is subjective but as long as the movie's content is good, has good acting and decently promoted, it will work well regardless of genre or actors. If you have bankable actors, that's an added bonus

Content based or good sories that are directed and told well work most of the time.
Leave the top three (Aamir and co) out of the disscussion for this.

Lets see the movies that have done well over the past two years

Badlapur. Rated R and it did really well.
Piku.
TWMR. 150 crores at the BO.
Drishyan. Again doing well.
Baby.
DLKH

Then you have MM, MI, F7, JW, AOU doing really well too.
Now name movies that werent strong on content/diffrent that did well this year?? Mostly nothing. ABCD, Gabbar (not really a success) are the only one that comes to mind. You canmake a case for TWMR too but its extremly thin.

Tevar flopped. Coutless other crap movies flopped. Brothers is facing big problems. Roy flopped.

Last year it was Haider, Ugly (did well for its budget which was 3-4 crores), Queen, Highway.

If you take a look in past few years good stories are the one that people are going to and seeing in numbers. The masala and other garbage that gets made mostly ends up being a disater.

2014 showed that patern even in biggies. HNY underperpormed, Same for BB, and Jai Ho. Akshays and Ajays movies flopped.

The problem as I see it are;
- Nobody bothers to make good movies.
- There is no impetus to tell fantastic stories. Its the same dull routine over and over agai.
- Only handful of directors have the passion for cinema and know how to craft a well told story.
- Nobody bothers to hire terrific writers. How can the screenplay be any good??

The budgets. They are crazy. Tells you how much these people know about film-making. Tevar had a sixty crore budget. Any crap that gets made has a budget of over 50. Anurag made GOW in 16 crores both parts. Anyone else and it would have benn over 100.

I for the life of me cant understand how movies in BW end up going so high when they can be made at half the cost. Badlapur and Ugly are fantastic examples on how to do it right. Budgets of just 25 and 4 crores. Udaan was again around 10 and GOW at 16 for both parts.

So make the damned thing on what it needs. No need for stupid random songs or locations or sets. Tell the story, plain and simple.
