I like a great many golden oldie songs, and I like many of the modern Bollywood songs. (In contrast my wife prefers the 'classics' and thinks the modern stuff sounds too tinny to her ears.)
In a documentary about the history of Bollywood, I heard someone argue that songs in the past were different in many ways from the modern ones. The songs of yesteryear were penned often by recognised poets and these beautiful and complex lyrics were then set to music. In contrast (the person argued) modern songs are designed to be danced to, fast dances with rapid beats. This present very tight constrints on the length and complexity of lyrics.
Do you think that comment fair?
While I'm on the subject of Bollywood songs, imo, some of the dance numbers are unnecessarily elaborate and involve too many people. I have no problem with nudity and I'm certainly no prude. I'm not averse to seeing Priyanka Chopra and the like in short and revealing costumes. What I find annoying aswell as somewhat immature is the cupping of genitals and pelvic thrusts and excessive heaving of bosoms. (Note I didn't say i was shocked!) Is it really necessary and is it tasteful is the question. On the one hand many Indians will talk about sexual morality/behaviour in one way but think nothing of the crudity of sexual behaviour in Bollywood films. I don't know, you tell me, but are Indians schizophrenic (or perhaps Jekyll & Hyde would be a better description) about this subject?
Well where do stand on the old versus new song issue?
If you want to comment on the second bit I've written (or both) feel free to do so.
