Inside the mind of a cyber stalker 😕

Virtual world is turning out to be a true reality. The problem with the Net, as says a blogger, is that it is turning out like the real world, but without any rules or laws that govern us.

Adnan Patrawala is an apt example. His murder was part-plotted on the Net by his friends, and the police is still trying to unravel the identity of a person called 'Angel' who is supposed to be Adnan's online girlfriend. After the murder, Adnan's profile was tampered with and several messages were deleted.

This is not social networking sites' first brush with crime. While earlier incidents were limited to hacking, posting lewd profiles and morphing pictures, the recent one took a more sinister form.

All such crimes go to prove one thing -- the online criminal is in our midst and he/she will stop at nothing!

Who's a cyber stalker?

A suave, sophisticated stranger you meet on the Net who knows your likes and dislikes. He is mostly tech-savvy and sounds like a perfect bet to befriend or date. In reality, he may be a jilted lover, a voyeur, an unhappy or vindictive co-worker, a passionate fan or a total stranger. Most stalkers, however, are depressed, agonised, cynical people out to vent their personal frustrations on you.

And it's smooth sailing all the way -- with hi-tech spywares like tiny cameras and GPS devices being intrinsic features of their profile. Also, the stalker can easily trace your address thanks to the IP address of your computer. It might be interesting to chat using a webcam but the stalker saves your images and uses the same to blackmail you at a future date

Types of stalkers

Online stalkers can be broadly classified into two categories.

Organised stalkers
Everything is planned in a perfect sequence. You go stepwise. Step A is to send obscene messages, B to intimidate, C to threaten and so on. They are experienced and ruthless. They are like passionate lovers -- if they are infatuated with you, they'll make sure that they have you and will not let anyone else come close to you. Intimidation leads to threats and murder follows the chain. They are dangerous, as their fantasies about the victim are deeply entrenched and they can't be shaken out of it.

Disorganised stalkers
This is the impulsive lot. There is no plan and preparation. Relatively raw, if things go out of hand, they panic and physically harm you, sometimes killing you by mistake. This is a curable disease, as a person can be pulled out of its shackles if the tendency is detected in the initial stages.

How to know you are being targeted?

It can start in the form of innocuous messages that a stranger is sending you and can then turn violent and lewd. To get information, these criminals use the victim's profile, his or her friends etc.

Rajat Mitra, criminal psychologist, says, "The things that are most important for such criminals are privacy and control over the victim. On the Internet, where there is no one to check them, they can exert more control without their dirty secrets being revealed to all. Hence, seeing the victim squirm makes them feel powerful. I treated a girl who was not on cordial terms with her family. She got extremely close to a girl on the web.

Later, it was revealed that the friend was actually a man impersonating as a girl. The girl opened up to him, as she would have to a close buddy and rattled all her intimate details."

The psyche

Ethical hacker Ankit Fadia, tells, "A stalker can go to any length to obtain sensitive information about you. For all you know, he might make a profile in your name and address all your friends using your name and basic information.

This kind of stuff gives such criminals a high, a rush of adrenaline. He/she experiences the ultimate sense of power when he can see your pictures, and if he can tamper them, even better."

Cyber crime specialist Pavan Duggal says, "The hesitation of the victim to report such cases is an impediment. Lack of a political will and deterrent mechanism are also hold-ups. The stalker is a pro and obliterates all electronic evidence against him."
