Part 7 ~ Separation & Realization
It was around nine in the morning. In the bedroom of the flat, Rishi and Milli were still sound asleep in bed. Milli had her arm wrapped around Rishi's chest as he had her arm around her. He slowly opened his eyes, seeing her by his side. He brushed aside her hair with his hand as she was still sleeping. He then slowly moved his arm off and pushed her arm off of him, grabbing clothes from the night stand as he got out of bed.
After freshening up, Rishi heard the sound of the doorbell ringing. He headed off to the door, opening it to see the post man had come. "Here's your mail today, sir." the post man told Rishi, handing him the mail. Rishi nodded as the post man left.
Rishi looked through the mail and found an envelope that caught his eye. He ripped the envelope open, taking out the papers inside. His face changed as he was looking at the annulment papers.
He sat down near the kitchen, looking at the papers as he sat in the kitchen.
After some time, Milli came inside the kitchen, smiling more than usual. She was dressed in the white salwar kameez she had worn last night. "Good morning." Milli greeted as she came before Rishi.
Rishi looked at her with a hesitant look on his face, "Morning."
"Should I make something for you? Coffee, omelette-"
"No, I'm fine. Um...Milli...we need to talk."
"Sure. What's up?"
"About last night."
"What about last night?"
"Milli...whatever happened between us...last night...I'm sorry. It was a mistake."
Milli's smile turned into a look of disappointment. "Mistake?"
"Yeah. I mean...I was drunk last night. Actually...its not even about that. I get we're legally married. But we both agreed to treat this as an act. I mean...we barely know each other."
"So whatever happened last night meant nothing to you?!"
"Look...I-"
"I'm so stupid! I can't believe how stupid I am!"
"Milli?"
"Even I was playing along with your whole act! Because you got me involved with this in the first place! But for the past few days...I was feeling something different. Something I never felt before."
"Milli...I've just been thinking-"
"Thinking about what?! I'm such an idiot! How could I think that a guy who doesn't even have the initiative to follow his dreams could also follow his heart?! Well guess what?! I thought maybe after what happened last night, something new came between us. But I guess I was wrong. I'm just another one of your former girlfriends who was nothing more than a memory in the back of your mind. The only difference is whatever I thought happened between us was real...but I guess it wasn't."
Rishi kept silent, listening to every word Milli said. Milli then noticed the annulment papers in Rishi's hands. She took the papers and stormed into the bedroom, leaving Rishi alone, lost in thoughts.
After an hour, Milli came out of the room with her bag and suitcase as she had packed all her things. As she walked by Rishi, who was still sitting in the kitchen, she was holding the annulment papers.
Milli came by and threw the annulment papers on the counter top. "My part is done. You just sign and take care of the rest," Milli said. "Whatever didn't belong to me I left here. And whatever problems you have afterwards are done on my side. Everything is in your hands now."
With that, Milli stormed out of the flat with her suitcase and bag, leaving with tear filled eyes as she went inside the elevator.
As the day passed, Rishi was sitting idle in the kitchen. He got up, heading into the bedroom. As he went inside, he saw the red dress he bought for Milli, laying on the bed along with the jewelry set with it. He grabbed hold of the dress as his eyes looked down upon it with sadness.
He then threw the dress on the bed and headed into the kitchen where he grabbed hold of the annulment papers. He saw Milli's signatures along with the blank spaces for his. But in frustration, he began to rip the papers into pieces, throwing them on the floor. He sat down at the kitchen table, putting his hand to his head.
"I'm an idiot," Rishi said out loud. "I love her. I actually love her."
