Chapter 5: Shaadi

Sanjana walked to and fro in the terrace. She felt extremely restless. Today was her shaadi with Ajay and Ajju still avoided her phone. As she tried calling Ajju once again, her eyes fell on the saree she was wearing yesterday in the rain. She had hung it out to dry in the morning. And then the familiar tingling sensation came in her stomach again. She kept the phone down and looked at it thoughtfully. She thought over all the times that she had an encounter with Ajay. Each time she met him, she had felt special, a feeling that she had never had when she was with Ajay. She thought of how he cared for her and how much it pained her to see him hurt. That's because we are friends. Friends care for each other like I care for Ajay' she said to herself and tried to think something else. She tried to think about Ajju but she just couldn't think about him for more than a minute without having thoughts of Ajay. Ajay had been with them ever since they started courting. She just could not think about anything she had done or will do without thinking about Ajay. Nowadays her days started and ended with Ajay. What will Ajay like? Will he be happy if I do this or that? And stuff like that. Now will you accept that you love him?' asked her heart. How can I?' said her mind.

Aargh stop it, okay I accept that everything that I do is for Ajay and I cannot bear to think of anything that doesn't have Ajay in it.

Once she had said that aloud, Sanjana's heart took control of her mind and she just couldn't deny her feelings now.

I love Ajay? I love Ajay! Oh dear, what a fool I was to not accept this before. I love him.

She pranced around the terrace for a little while and then stopped suddenly. Thoughts of Ajju came to her and her mind asked her Aren't you betraying him?' She stood still for a little while and then smiled as she remembered something very important. Ajju had ditched her when there was no one by her side and they were not really committed to each other as they were not even engaged. They had just courted for two months and Sanjana had asked him to marry her. So, it won't be wrong to break up with him.

I'll tell Ajju that I don't love him. Trying to get committed with Ajju was just my foolishness. We were never in love. We just had fun with each other like good friends often do and thought it was love. How stupid we were! Oh well, now everything is sorted out. Trying to force love on good friendship is sin. Now, I'll make everything alright. And Ajay, I love you and I know...

She stopped here and her face became deathly pale as her mind asked her, Do you really know that Ajay loves you?' She tried to believe that Ajay was in love with her but she just couldn't. He had never once told her that he loved her or shown any kind of attraction for her. Her heart tried to argue with her But yesterday in the rain?' Her mind answered He said it was just a mistake'. She could convince Ajju that she never ever loved him and it was just a mistake. But how was she to convince Ajay? She knew that to Ajay a friend's honor was more important than his own self. Even if Ajju accepted her request and broke up with her, Ajay will never accept her. She walked as if her entire life was suck out from her. She didn't know when she reached the end of the terrace. Suddenly she felt giddy and felt herself lose her balance.

Ajay searched for Sanjana everywhere. He had been trying to call Ajju for so long but he didn't pick up. He wanted her to ask her to try and call Ajju. After about fifteen minutes of searching, somebody told him that she was up the terrace. Muttering a thanks, he rushed upstairs only to see her standing at the end of the terrace and swaying as if she were about to fall. Ajay felt numb, everything around him was a blur. All he knew was that if he just stood there and let her fall, he also must fall along with her. He ran to her and caught her arm just as she lost her balance. Sanjana looked startled to see him. He pulled her to him.

Are you crazy?

Sorry, Ajay, I really didn't notice, sorry...

What sorry? What if you had fell down? What if something had happened to you? Do you even think about anyone except yourself?

Sanjana suddenly felt angry. Why did he pretend to care when he really had no feelings for her? All these pretenses had made her fall for him.

So what if I fall? What is that to you? You don't need to worry about me.

Ajay pulled her even closer and looked at her with anger in his eyes.

Don't you even dare to talk to me like that! I will worry about you because you are my life and I cannot live without you.

Ajay said all this in a low threatening voice. But Sanjana could read beyond the anger.

Do you really care for me that much, Ajay?

Huh?

Ajay looked at her in a confused manner and then as the intensity of the words he had just uttered in his anger hit him, he moved away from her. He looked at her tear filled eyes and it broke his heart to leave her and go. But he just couldn't cheat on Ajju.

You belong to Ajju, Sanjana and I do not have any right to care... for... you...

Sanjana looked sadly at his retreating back. Why was love so difficult? She had finally found true love but she could never be with him. Her phone rang and she turned to look at it.

Ajju?
