Chapter-37
YOU'RE MY HEARTFLASHBACKRaman and Ashok were childhood friends and neighbours in Mumbai. The main thing which tied Ashok to Raman was his secret love for Shagun. Raman on the other hand was overprotective towards his little sister and wanted to keep her safe forever with him. For that he had decided not to get married in his entire life. He was scared if she will feel alone and humiliated in some way if he slip into matrimonial obligations. He didn't trusted anyone to give her responsibilities. He couldn't believe even his family. He was scared if they felt burdened by her.
On the other hand, Shagun who is mentally instable found a good partner in Ashok and Ashok acted way more caring and convincible than Raman. He knew the limits that bounds Raman but for him helping Shagun and being with her was so natural.
One day Ashok was playing with Shagun. They were all in talking about nothing but nonsense; for a stable individual. Raman was wondering how Ashok gone crazy. He silently kept on watching both of them in awe oblivious to them. It was then that Ashok got up to leave that Raman felt agitated to see him kissing Shagun on her forehead which wasn't needed there. In no time he pulled Ashok by his collar and beat him black and blue for abusing his sister's condition.
Shagun was horrified at first and began to cry loudly calling everyone. She was confused whether to stand with her brother or the special person in her life. She was too small to think and decide.
It was the family's interference that made Raman calm a bit. But he was still mad at Ashok for doing so. Ashok's parents were also got furious hearing Raman and in no time Ashok got slapped by his dad.
"Bacchi ki fayda utha rahe dhe saala...!"
[Was using the condition of her!]
"Dekhiye uncle ji...friend hai mera. We are business partners...but that doesn't mean that he can behave in such way to my sister. She is everything for me." Raman said angrily glaring at Ashok.
"Voh Raman...main...mujhe...I Love Shagun a lot..." Ashok didn't expect the slap which followed his declaration.
[That Raman...I...me...]
"Try to understand me Raman...! I LOVE HER...!!! AND I MEAN IT!!!!" Ashok stressed making Raman calm a bit not understanding what Ashok is up to.
However, Ashok's family got to know his intentions and tried to interfere making it an ugly argument. Mr and Mrs Bhalla were caught in between their son and Ashok. Raman was neutral, trying his best to avoid a fight where as Ashok ignited it saying he won't marry any other girl but Shagun.
None was understanding his stand. Raman was in a dilemma of whether to support his friend or his parents. Both were right in their place. A girl who is mentally imbalanced cannot be a good daughter-in-law and their wish to get a good girl was justifiable.
Meantime, Shagun is Ashok's first love. He loves her lot that he didn't mind fighting with his own parents. Deep in Raman's heart he do want Shagun to get married. But he couldn't voice it out even with his best friend, Ashok. Raman's silence was giving Ashok the strength to fight with his parents. He very well understood what Raman expects from him.
Finally the fight ended in smiles and wishes for the upcoming engagement of Shagun and Ashok. Raman hugged Ashok tightly almost killing him in happiness. Ashok giggled saying a "don't kill me I'm owned." Raman beat his chest saying "You failed me damn it...!"
Shagun and Ashok were like kids in the Bhalla house after marriage. Bhalla house added one more member there while the Khannas lost one. Shagun couldn't stay without Raman. So Ashok decided to pack his things to shift to Bhalla's. What else is needed to provoke the parents who are already against such a sacrificial marriage?
Moreover, everyone was wondering whether Ashok is normal or he is also like Shagun. The comfort level and understanding both shared was awesome. It was after three months that the Khannas cooled down hearing that Shagun is expecting. Although, they didn't left a place to taunt the Bhallas. Raman was so happy and calm after Shagun and Ashok's wedding but got the shock of his life hearing Shagun is pregnant.
"This is not happening Ashok. Aisa nahi ho sakta. She can't make it. Try to understand.,," Raman pleaded.
"I know Raman...but it was accidental. I didn't mean to do it. I...I mean it was a one day mistake. And...the doctor told her straight away that there is a baby in her tummy and she is like...she is waiting for the baby to come out." Ashok explained in tears.
"An abortion is what I can only suggest. Aur kuch nahin ho sakta. I can't risk her life." Raman said firmly.
"Main kuch nahin kar sakta. It is easy to abort without her knowledge. But then...she will wait for the baby forever. I can't see that. I just can't let that happen..." Ashok almost cried.
"Kya matlab hai tumhara?" Raman crinkled his eyebrows.
[what you mean?]
"Matlab yeh hai ki...I will fulfil her every wish." Ashok stressed.
"I can't lose her..." Raman's eyes welled up.
"Me too...and the babies..." Ashok tried to say but cut short by Raman.
"Babies? You mean twins?" Raman shook Ashok.
"Haan...twins..." Ashok sighed.
"OMG...you people are awesome...!!!" Raman exclaimed hugging Ashok forgetting his worries.
The succeeded days were of pampering of Shagun by her three brothers and her lovely husband. Everyone was happy till Shagun's eighth month of pregnancy. Ashok's parents were trying hard to fake smile in front of their son, still planning to separate him from the Bhallas, especially Shagun.
Everything was handy until Ashok's conference in US came up. Raman tried his best to replace Ashok in vain. Finally he had to go leaving behind a dejected Shagun and Raman.
Albeit, Ashok's family found it a good opportunity to proceed their plan. They didn't left a chance to create misunderstandings between the a Bhallas and Ashok. But Ashok was going happy thinking everything going perfect thought he is not there.
Ashok's absent made Shagun go way more hanky-panky. She was acting more angry and violent even with Raman. One day Shagun throw the food on Raman which he was feeding her. Raman got infuriated and lashed out at her for throwing the food. Shagun started crying nonstop owing to Raman's fury.
"Mera Ashok hote toh...Voh mujhse bahut pyar karte hai...ap nahin karte...main apse baat nahin karungi..." Shagun strode away clutching her abdomen laming to her room.
[If it was my Ashok...he loves me so much...not you...I won't talk to you]
"Bachkani harkat karnewali ladki se shaadi karke ab pachta rahe hai mera beta."
[My son is regretting marrying a child-like girl]
Raman turned in shock to see an enraged Mrs Khanna standing there. He asked the reason for her sudden change. She spat out her venom and all the lies on her own son. She only wanted Raman to get angry and ask Ashok to leave Shagun. But she didn't expect him to call Ashok at the very moment to clear the air.
Raman said to Ashok that his mom is saying something about him and Shagun. Ashok who thought that it might be about some trifle thing and was too busy to inquire more said that whatever his mummiji saying is true and he should accept it, otherwise it will be a huge problem. When Ashok meant it to stop a fight he was unknowingly igniting a fire in his own home.
Whatever followed was so dramatical that made the Bhalla family a hell. Ashok was so busy and hooked up with the buzz in hand believing that Raman will handle everything perfectly. He was oblivious of the fuss going on there because of him.
The misunderstandings went on its peaks when Ashok didn't call Shagun but Raman only for business purpose. Raman felt that their relationship is shrinking to that of just professional and whatever there were between Ashok and Shagun is no more.
However, Ashok knowingly avoided calling Shagun because his mother statd a lame excuse of mobile radiation which can affect the health of the mother and the babies. She was extra sweet to tell him everything about her bahu/ DIL to him which he thought was true. He felt a longing to hear Shagun's voice every time he talks to his mom but suppressed it storing to open up when he meets her. He avoided asking about his "Wife" to his "Friend" making the situation worse.
Ashok's absence affected Shagun so badly but the family tried their best to keep her away from the commotions. It was Mrs Khanna's loud ramblings regarding Ashok and her innovated story on Ashok's deep hatredness towards Shagun that broke the safe zone. Shagun who heard it from upstairs fell down making Mrs Bhalla and Romi shell shocked. Mrs Khanna didn't bother to show a helping hand to them but asked her husband to let them manage themselves. She was happy that somehow Shagun will go away from her son.
A freaked out Shagun started beating her stomach angrily forgetting her and Ashok's happiness residing there. Romi and Toshi were in hell watching Shagun in such a condition and were crying aloud. Romi called Raman and gave the mobile to Toshi as he was driving to the hospital.
PHONE CONVERSATIONToshi: "Puttar...sara kuch gadbad hogaya hai. Shagun pet pe maar rahe hai...pata nahin ise kaise sambhalungi...!"
[Everything is going wrong. Shagun is beating her stomach. Don't know how to handle her]
Raman: "Maa...main aa raha hun..use control karo...don't let her hit on her stomach. Bache keliye problem hoga...Already it's complicated..sun rahe ho nah...?"
[I'm coming maa..Control her. It will trouble the kids]
Toshi: "Mujhse nahi ho pa raha hai puttar...tum jaldi aaja..."
[I can't son. You come fast]
Raman: "Samajhne ki koshish toh karo maa...I'm driving fast. Ap log City Hospotal jaao...main seedha vahan aa jaata hun."
[Try to understand maa. You people go to the City hostel I'm coming straightaway there]
Toshi: "Haan...tikhe puttar..."
[OK son]
Raman was so much into the call that he didn't notice the woman jumping in front of his car. He looked through the glass to saw a beautiful woman, dressed like a bride squashing from her feet to the air, then, ****TUD**** To the ground. The humane in him slowed down the car for a second but the selfish man in him only wanted to get to his beloved other than getting in more troubles.
IN THE HOSPITALMrs Bhalla and Romi were pacing restlessly in front of the Operation Theatre when Raman reached there. Mrs Bhalla ran to him and took him in a hug crying her heart out.
Raman: "Maa...ap tension lena band karo...everything will be alright"
[Maa stop taking tension]
Mrs Bhalla: "Kuch tikh nahin hai puttar...kuch bhi tikh nahin..."
[Nothing is fine son]
Raman after looking inquisitively at Toshi asks to Romi, "Kya hua Romi...sab...Doctor ne kya kahan?"
[What happened Romi? What did doctor say?]
Romi drops himself on the waiting bench, "Humein teenon ko bhi nahin mil sakta bhai...Shagun is so rude...voh...maar maarke ek bache ko maar dala...aur ek ko bachana namumkin hogaya ki Shagun ki health bhi bigad gaya hai..."
[We won't get three of them. Shagun killed a baby by hitting on her tummy and saving the other one is impossible as Shagun's health became so bad]
Raman didn't utter a word but stayed silent until Mr Bhalla and Mihir came there. He cried out on his dad's shoulder. After a long wait, the doctor came out.
Doctor: "I'm sorry Mr Bhalla...hum bache aur maa...donon ko bacha nahin paya..."
[We couldn't save both baby and mom]
Romi: Hastily, "But...twins...twins dhe..."
Doctor: "I'm coming to that...It's a baby girl. Incubator main hai...She is so fragile. Though there is ten percent chance. We hope that she'll make it."
Raman: "Sha...Shagun...?"
Doctor: Patting his shoulder, "We tried our best Mr Bhalla...But..."
A broken Raman walked out of there to get some peace, but ended up overhearing the coversation between a police officer and Mihika. Later on realised that the woman whom he did hit when drove past madly to the hospital cannot conceive anymore.
All these upshots were taking a toll over him making him reject all the calls from Ashok and finally breaking his mobile in anger. The misunderstandings created by Mr and Mrs Khanna were way too greater that Ashok stayed relaxed trusting his family while Raman got the wrong meaning.
Ashok was worried over Raman's behaviour and decided to call Mr Bhalla only to get the same response. He was in a taxi from airport to his home; Shagun.
His BP raised watching the Bhalla house locked. "Shagun...is she alright?" He rubbed his chin in tension and ran towards his house only to stop at the doorway hearing his parents' talk.
"Kya kuch karna pada humein Ashok ko Shagun se door karne keliye...! Acha hua use US jaana pada..." Mrs Khanna sighed.
[What all we did to separate Ashok and Shagun. It's good that he gotta go to US]
"Tikh kaha tune. Pata nahin Shagun ka kya halat hai ab?" Mr Khanna expressed his concern.
[You're right. Don't know how's Shagun]
"Oye chupkarna ji. Use kya hoga...vohi jo dikh rahe dhe. Marr bhi jaaye mujhe koyi farak nahin..." Mrs Khanna's words trailed of when she turned and saw an enraged Ashok looking at her.
[Shut up. What will happen... That what you saw. Let her die I just don't...]
She tried to say sonething but Ashok stopped her showing his hand. "Kuch nahin sunna hai mujhe. Kya socha ap logon neh...Shagun ko mujhse alag karne se sab tikh hoga? Ki main doosra shaadi karoge? FYI...You're mistaken. No one can replace Shagun in my life!!! Lekin kuch logon ko main apna zindagi se hatha sakta hun." Ashok roared on top of throat making his parents go stiffened.
[I don't wanna hear anything. What you think...that I'll marry someone else if you ride off Shagun? ____But I can remove some people from my life]
"Kya matlab hai Ashok? Tum voh pagal ladki keliye tere maa baap ko chodenge?" Mrs Khanna asked shedding crocodile tears.
[What you mean? You will leave us for that mad girl?]
"Yes I mean it! I don't want any parents who doesn't care about my happiness. And it will be hard...very hard for you both if something happens to my Shagun...! Remember it!!" He said sternly pointing his index finger against his mom's face.
After a last glance back at his parents, he went out aiming City Hospital. After enquiring in the reception he madly ran towards the labour room and halted to see Raman sitting on the floor all shattered.
He sat in front of Raman who was clutching his head in his hands and asked him about Shagun while everyone looked on angrily. Before he could ask further Raman kicked him hard on his chest. Grasping while patting his chest Ashok looked at Raman with a "What's wrong with you" expression.
In no time Raman stood up and was beating Ashok black and blue for leaving his sister to death. Ashok tried to resist until he heard Raman saying, "You killed my sister. You made her dream and you yourself destroyed it. You killed Shagun"
Romi along with Mihir tried to bring Raman into sense that it is a hospital but in futile. Shagun's body covered in a white fabric pushed out of the labour room making the crowd go still. Raman left Ashok's side and was crying along with his brothers while Mr Bhalla tried to get Toshi into consciousness.
Time paused. Ashok dropped himself on the floor. Tears found its way down his cheeks but his throat was too dry to let out a cry. He literally crawled towards the stretcher to see Shagun. He couldn't accept the fact that she is no more with him. That he cannot see her anymore after this. That he is all alone. That he lost everything.
Ashok longingly forwarded his hand to touch Shagun's exhausted and lifeless face. Raman jerked his hands off making him cry more. No one heeded to his pleas. He stayed there expecting them to listen to him. He couldn't steal a glance at her because of her family. He felt like his life moving away from him when the stretcher found its way out of the corridor along with the family madly following.

"Then I met Raman after a week. I tried before but couldn't. And we had a very huge fight over my daughter." Ashok sighed and looked at Raman.
"Haan...I asked him to prove himself right..." Before Raman could complete Ashok intervened, "By leaving my precious thing to him and never turn back. So..."
"You gave Ruhi to Raman...?" Ishita asked curiously in a shivering voice. Her eyes welled up and throat choking to spit her cries.
"No. I made Samantha Ashok Khanna...Ruhi Raman Kumar Bhalla!!!" Ashok said smiling in his tears.

Ishita excused the gentlemen and went to the washroom to freshen up her mind. Raman and Ashok slipped to a man to man talk. Raman persuaded Ashok to move on and marry a girl who can make him happy.
Ashok wiped a lone tear and mumbled, "She used to make me euphoric. Haha...Ab koyi aur se nahin ho sakta...I can't yaar."
[No one else can]
Raman leaned forward, "See Ashok...mujhe bhi toh shaadi par koyi interest nahin the nah...! Ab Ishita hai mere saath kyunki...I gave myself a second chance...You should also..."
[I too hasn't had any interest in marriage. Now Ishita is with me because ___]
Ashok cut Raman jokingly, "Agar tum nahin hote toh shayad mein...you know...Ishita ko milne ke baad pehali baar life ko ek light mila tha...lekin...tum...you literally snatched her."
[If you wouldn't have been there...My life Hansa seen a light after meeting Ishita. But you...]
Raman became a little nervous but got along with the flow. "Tum khud mandap chodke chala gaya tha...!"
[You only left the mandap]
Ashok smiled meekly and revealed, "Kyunki mujhe meri beti sabse important hai!"
[Because my daughter is my everything]
"Ruhi ne poocha...?" Raman's eyes popped out.
[Ruhi asked?]
"Hmm...Ishita ko pata hai...Ruhi ne use bola tha..." Ashok cleared.
[Ishita knows it. Ruhi told her]
"Yeh sab kya ho raha hai yaar!!!" Raman wondered.
[What's happening?]
"Jab tune Ishita ko ajeebse ghur rahe the nah engagement pe...tabhi mujhe pata chala tha ki...something is fishy. Phir tera Jackie Chan fight! Mujhe toh tab sirf gussa tha. Kyunki tum mujhe kabhi nahin samjha. Aur guilt ki unknowigly...I was the reason for everything." Ashok cleared.
[I understood everything from the way you stared at Ishita on the engagement day. Then your Jackie Chang fight. I was angry because you didn't understand me.]
Raman held Ashok's hands and apologized, "I'm sorry yaar...voh...us vakt toh mujhe sirf tujhe Ishita se alag karna tha. Maine socha tum use yaa kisi bhi ladki ko khush nahin rakh sakta. And yeah...personal interest bhi toh the!" He chuckled.
[That time I only wanted to separate Ishita and you. I thought you can't make any girl happy. And of course there was personal interest.]
"I know...aur...Ruhi...?" Ashok's sight blurred.
"I honestly want...to...tell her..." Raman stammered.
"Chodo yaar...she is my girlfriend. Aise hi acha lagta hai!" Ashok faked happiness.
[Leave it. This is good]
"Matlab kya hai tumhara?" Came Raman's confused question.
[What you mean?]
Ishita came and sat next to Raman furrowing her eyebrows quizzically.
"I mean...don't ever tell her that I am her papa. Voh hamesha Ruhi Raman Kumar Bhalla rehenge. Sirf aur sirf tum donon ke beti." Ashok stressed before walking away leaving behind the happiest couple in the world.
[She will be Ruhi Raman Kumar Bhalla forever.]
