ManYa TS - Crazy, Stupid Love
Part One
Who would have thought The Amaya Mathur would fall so hopelessly in love with a Banarasi boy someday? Who would have thought that her first and only love would go so painfully unrecognized and unrequited? It was with a very heavy heart that Amaya walked into office that morning. The physical pain from the race the previous day was nothing compared to the pain and heaviness that had settled in her chest since yesterday. She had won the race; yet she had lost. Uma had lost the race and yet she had won. The memory of the moment when Mantu let go of the sacred thread, the panic in his eyes as he heard Uma's scream and the sheer frenzy with which he ran to aide her - each of those moments had been stored in her memory as freeze frames. And every time she closed her eyes, every time she opened them, every time she breathed, those images were all she could see. And each time she relived those memories, her heart broke all over again. Her very first love, her very first puja, her very first mannat had remained incomplete. A single tear escaped from the corner of her eye and Amaya brushed it away impatiently. She swallowed past the lump in her throat and took a deep breath. She could do this. She had to this. For Mom. For Rachita Di. For Jazz. She had to get over her heart break and go about her life as if nothing happened. She could not and would not cry in office and create a scene.
She had just opened up her computer and started with her work when she heard his voice - his ever cheerful greeting to everyone he came across as he walked in office, his messenger bag on one shoulder and lunch box in hand. A lunch box that Uma packed for him.. Everyday.. she reminded herself. How many times had he sung praises of the food she cooked? How had she not seen this before? Amaya wondered. As the sound of Mantu's laughter at something the office peon said echoed in the hallway and drew nearer, Amaya felt her aching heart thud painful in her chest. How would she face him without falling apart? How was he so oblivious? Like she had been blinded in his love to not see how much he loved Uma, maybe he was blinded by his love for Uma to not see love for him shining in her eyes.
"Good morning Madam!" he greeted her cheerfully, stopping at her station. "How are you? Have you recovered from the race yesterday? How is your hand?" Without waiting for her response, he took her hand in his and checked her wound. "It still looks pretty bad. Must hurt pretty bad too. Why did you have to come into work today if you haven't recovered completely?" he asked worried. Why was he making this so difficult? Amaya wondered. "How is Uma?" she asked, pulling her hand away from his. "It's Mahadev's blessing that she is all right now. Otherwise, seeing her fall off the steps like that.. Honestly, it almost killed me," he said. Amaya felt hot tears gather in her eyes and she blinked to keep them from falling.
"She is recovering well now, thank God. Looks like you two have become good friends eh? You are so concerned about her. That's good. It makes me happy that the two of you are trying to get along. At least I will be spared the trouble of trying to be peace keeper between the two of you," Mantu continued. "Oh you didn't tell me how the Pooja went yesterday? I had to leave to take care of Uma and I am sure Mahadev and Parvati Maa will understand. How did your Pooja go? Are you excited that your wish will come true now?" he asked. "Must be a super special wish because I still don't understand how you made it there so fast. The boys were saying that Uma was ahead of everyone else. Then how did you get there before her?" Amaya said nothing and Mantu noticed that she was exceptionally quiet. He knew there was something bothering her. "Amaya..Why are you so quiet today? Is everything okay? Are you not feeling well?" he asked. "No. Everything is okay. I.. I am just.. still tired from the race yesterday," she replied. "Are you sure? Why do I feel that you are hiding something from me?" Mantu asked. Amaya looked at him at that. You can read even my silences Mantu. Then why and how is that you don't see how much I love you? She thought to herself as she looked at him.
Mantu felt like she was trying to say something to him but couldn't figure out what. There definitely was something bothering her. Even the exhaustion of the race couldn't have marred her excitement of having won otherwise. Before he could ask her anything further, Mukesh came along and told Amaya that the boss wanted to see her. She got up from her desk and walked away. Mantu noticed that she was limping and walking really slow. He looked down at her feet and saw the numerous blisters and cuts and scratches on them. Oh dear! She must be in so much pain, he thought. "Amaya!" he called out to her. Amaya stopped and turned to look at him. "You are hurt so bad! Really! Why did you have to come to office today?" he asked her. "Its all right. Pain and I seem to have long standing relationship," she tried to joke about it but her smile gave away the sorrow she was trying to hide. "I have to go meet the boss. I'll talk to you later," she said as she turned to walk away. "Wait.. I'll come with you. You have trouble walking. I'll come with you," Mantu said as he dumped her messenger bag and lunch box in her table and extended his hand towards her. Amaya fought back a fresh bout of tears. "Its okay Mantu. Somethings I just have to do on my own. You won't always be there, will you?" Amaya smiled as she turned and walked away.
Why was she behaving so strangely? Mantu wondered as he picked up his bag and lunch box. What did she mean by he wouldn't always be there? What had happened? He had to find out. He liked her being her chirpy, slightly irritating, confusing self. This sad, hurting, silent Amaya - he didn't like seeing her like that.
