Chapter 43
Several hours later Maya rushes through Ragav's hospital room, call out, "I am so sorry." Grabbing her crying baby, she says, "Avni hunny, mama is very sorry."
Furious, Ragav scolds, "how could you Maya? Kalpi would never..." Stops, chocking on his words as he tries to shake away images and conversations that he now knows were not real.
Feeling guilty for having lost track of time, Maya says softly, "I am so sorry. Was she much trouble?" Sighing, Ragav replies, "no she was okay. The nurses were kind enough to help me out. Good thing you had everything in the baby bag."
Ragav walks up to Kalpi's picture, caresses it and says, "what was so important that you lost track of time?" Turning mid sentence to face Maya.
Maya stares at Ragav, who is holding Kalpi's picture, silently debating what she should tell him, quietly she says, "Ragav please respect my privacy. I would prefer not to discuss my absence." Nodding, Ragav places Kalpi's picture on the table top, walks up to Maya, smiles and he holds his hands out to Avni.

(Am not good with Indian geography... Have not figured where the village is situated. Any suggestions.)
A small village
Vithal walks into his home exhausted, sees Kamla and says, "remind me again why we are here and not in Mumbai." Flushing, Kamla walks up to him with a glass of water, wisely not saying anything. She did not want to get into another argument over their move to the village.
Looking around as he gulps down the water, Vithal asks, "where is Kalpi?" Smiling with relief, Kamla replies, "she is still at the school, tutoring some kids." Taking the glass, she continues, "I have invited the Sharma's over for dinner." Grabbing her arm, Vithal forcefully turns Kamla towards him and says angrily, "I thought we discussed this. You are not to pressurise Kalpi to marry."
Kamla pulls her arm away and says, "it is time Kalpi moves on. The whole incident was just a bad dream." Furious, Vithal snaps, "dream! Have you forgotten that Kalpi is actually married. My God, Kamla, because of your fears, we faked her death and have been hiding in this hovel ever since. I should have never listened to you."
"I will never believe that my daughter would marry without my blessings. He must have deceived her." Kamla says. "How about we ask her?" Vithal says. "No," Kamla exclaims, "you promised that you would not mention it until Kalpi mentions it first." Shaking his head, Vithal walks out of his home, suddenly in need of space and fresh air.

Kalpi follows a narrow dirt road trail, walking to her home... Slowing down with every step, not wanting to go home. Sighing deeply she turns and walks back towards the school... Needing some time to herself... She was tired of smiling... Of feigning happiness... When all she wants to do is cry.
Sitting on a piece of log under an oak tree, she stares out into nothing... Her heart aching as memories race towards the ill fated day at the hospital.
Flashback starts
Groggy, Kalpi wakes up, murmuring Ragav,s name. Kamla maa rushes up to her, tears in her eyes, saying, "you are awake... You are awake." Her happiness knowing no bounds. Disoriented Kalpi looks about her, asking in a small voice, "Aai where am I?" Caressing her face, Kamal replies, "in the hospital, jaan." Frowning, she asks, "why? What happened? Last I remember I was coming home," she ends with a heavy heart.
"You had an accident. Hit and run," Kamla maa says. Unable to stop hersel, Kalpi asks, "where is Ragav?" Kamla stares at her daughter in disbelief, saying, "Kalpi after everything that happened, do you honestly believe he would come... That he would care?" Trying to keep the hurt away, Kalpi looks away, saying, "no... I don't know why I asked." Thinking sadly, "I thought I heard his voice... I guess I was dreaming"
Kamla maa clasps her daughter's hand in hers and says, "I was so happy this morning when the doctor said that you were out of coma... That you were sleeping. I have been waiting for you to wake up." Her eyes tearing, she says, "Kalpi, Ragav tried to kill you. He..." Frowning as she pulls her hand away from her mother's grasp, Kalpi interrupts and says, "what! Not possible. Why would..." Shaking her head, Kamla says, "because I killed his father! Don't you see it beta... It was the next step of his revenge... Eye for an eye... He promised me that he would take you away from me..." Panicking, she continues, "I can't have him take you away from me... Kalpi you are my life... I"
Slowly sitting up, Kalpi takes her mum in her arms, saying, "calm down Aai. Nothing like that is going to happen." Frowning, recalling how hesitant he was to take that final step to make love, she says, "I think you are mistaken Aai. Ragav would never..." Stepping out of the hug,Kamla interrupts, "I have proof." Walks towards the entrance door of the hospital room and says, "Please come in Neetu."
Kamla stands slightly away, her heart heavy, watching her daughter believe the false proof Neetu had made to show that Ragav was behind the accident... That his intention was to kill her. Guilty, seeing the pain reflect in her daughter's eyes, she whispers, "please forgive me."
Kalpi stares in horror at the proof laid out in front of her, dying a thousand deaths, thinking, "he never loved me... He will never love me."
Flashback ends
Wiping her tears, Kalpi murmurs to herself, "I wish all that proof was wrong. I wish there was some kind of mistake... Why would Ragav want to kill me when he was so insistent that I stay with him... Why would he make me fall in love with him if all he wanted to do was kill me..., screaming, "why... Why... Why..."
Brokenly, she whispers, "Aai saved my body... But my soul... Died that day. You won Ragav."
