Hollywood Working With Bollywood

With the release of Akshay Kumar's new movie Brothers coming up I have noticed that Lionsgate, the same production company that produced the Hollywood Brothers movie is also producing the Bollywood version. In the past Bollywood would have just ripped off the movie, made a ditto copy with little effort, scene for scene, dialogue for dialogue copy.

Now you see Bollywood movies coming out with Disney, Fox, Lionsgate as producers. Disney invested nearly $200 million in 2009 in one of Bollywood's biggest producers, UTV. At the same time, billionaire Indian industrialist Anil Ambani recently led a total investment of $825 million, of which his company is paying $325 million to Steven Spielberg's DreamWorks SKG Studios.

Subhash Ghai, a popular director and the founder of Whistling Woods International acting school in Mumbai, said Bollywood filmmakers will still copy American plots. But now they will have to buy the rights.

Times are changing now, we will see Hollywood actors working in Bollywood films, Bollywood actors working in Hollywood films. Bollywood actually buying the rights to copy a Hollywood movie, and who knows maybe Hollywood buying the rights to copy an original Bollywood movie in the future if such a thing exists.

You may have noticed not too many Bollywood producers are buying the rights of Hollywood movies to copy them since they will probably have to pay a hefty fee and give a share of the profits. Instead we are seeing Bollywood remaking South Indian movies, or coming up with original stories. We are getting a slew of lower budget movies with fresher faces, big stars are making one or two movies a year at the most now and they are most times remakes of South Indian movies.

Hollywood in recent years has started making more money overseas than their domestic box office. Bollywood has a global reach as well and Hollywood has taken recognition of this.

Good. Its like any "free trade" deal. Deal is good but whoz gonna get bigger share of the profit is the question. HW movies r already becoming big in Indian multiplxes which is on the rise.. and in near future may held 80% of all India BO. BW film makers need some really innovative ideas.. to break into other markets which r not tapped.. pirated DVDs r eating those markets.
HW studios producing BW movies is not a step forward. Its not like BW can find 100 Crs to make a movie itself. It will be only benificial to both parties to make an English version and Hindi version movies.. Or else.. this is not gonna work. Fox star as it is, may vanish soon.
