Why catfights? Why not womance?

She began her Bollywood career with two two-heroine films (Hero: Love Story of a Spy and Andaaz), has been in several such projects over the years and now, Priyanka Chopra has two back-to-back two-heroine projects " Dil Dhadakne Do and Bajirao Mastani. She shares screen space with Anushka Sharma in DDD which releases next week and will be seen with Deepika Padukone in BM later this year. Bitchy catfights? Fallouts? She says they don't feature in her scheme of things. Instead, she says, forget the boys and their bromance, talk of the girls and their womance! Excerpts...

At a time when actresses shy away from doing a two-heroine project, you have Dil Dhadakne Do and Bajirao Mastani lined up. No insecurity?

I've never thought about it. If I stop getting good work, maybe I'd become insecure. But as of now, I don't think, I have any insecurity in me. And yes, DDD and Bajirao Mastani will have me with Anushka or Deepika but this is not the first time I've done a two-heroine project. I have done Andaaz, Aitraaz and even Fashion. So, personally when it comes to choices in life, I have remained the same.

Anything you look for when you sign a two-heroine project?

If you have a good role, it doesn't matter whether your co-actors are male or female. Gender has no bias to me. Neither do numbers. Whether I have six co-actors or two, it doesn't matter at all. I just look at my job and my role. I want everyone in my films to perform well, so that my film performs well because if the film does well, I will automatically do well. So I am very scientific about it. (Smiles) I don't think anyone can outshine anybody. You have to choose the roles you have got meticulously and once you do that, you have to give your 100 per cent.

Arjun and Ranveer had opted for joint narrations before starting Gunday. Do you do something similar with your female co-stars?

I don't think it was to break the ice. It was probably to see ki kisi aur ko koi kuch toh bol nahi raha hai. It was that. (Laughs) I have never done that. I have always heard a story and if I've liked it, I don't see who my filmmaker will cast. I always have that faith in my director. I don't get into all that. I have no such desires or reservations.

Would you have taken up Zoya's film if you were offered Anushka's role?

I never thought about it because I was offered Ayesha's part. But yeah, if I'd have been offered Anushka's part, I would have taken it because I feel Zoya has a voice and has something to say. I really wanted to work with Anushka, although I have never seen any of her films and she always yells at me for it. And seeing the bigger picture, now I feel I would have taken anybody's part because DDD is a really great story. I like being part of good films and good stories.

You've also sung for Anushka in the film. Did you undergo voice modulation for that portion?

I sang the song before we had actually planned on how we wanted to shoot the video. No, I did not do any voice modulation at all, which is why she sounds like me in the song (laughs). My voice is very unique, so you can tell that it's me instantly. The idea of me and Farhan singing for the song was a random one which just came out of the blue when we all were at a party. People were like, Arre, Farhan bhi gaata hai. PC bhi gaati hai. Ek gaana karna chahiye'.

Javed saab wrote it and SEL (Shankar Ehsaan Loy) composed it and we went to the studio, completed the song in three hours and came back. The song was literally made like that. Without any plan or prep.

But whenever there are two heroines in a project, the popular belief is that there are catfights. Comment.

Trust me, this statement is totally pass. Today, all the actresses stand up for each other and this has brought in a huge shift in the industry. There's Vidya, Anushka, Deepika, Kangana and me who have joined hands and brought in a new revolution of sorts. We always appreciate each other's work and that's what was needed, at least, for an industry that called their heroines replaceable'. Contrary to people's beliefs that when there are two actresses, there will be catfights, there isn't any. It's only there in the papers and gossip columns today. It used to really irritate me that for two boys in a film, the term used was bromance'. Why can't it be womance for the girls? Why are we always reduced to catfights? Even for Anushka and me for DDD, people said we have had catfights. Why bhai? We are talented, intelligent girls. We are not dumb and stupid that you will just demean us, saying ladkiyan toh sirf fight karenge. Instead, the guys are so competitive. Nobody writes that.

Has your equation with Anushka and Deepika changed after doing these films?

No, why will it change? We have always been good friends. I have loved their work and they've probably loved mine. We don't have any ego tussles or cold wars brewing. We are very comfortable with each other and that's the most amazing thing. I can talk about whatever I want to with Anushka and Deepika and for that, it's not necessary to do a film together. But yes, the films have definitely helped us spend a lot more time together. The equations have remained the same.

Good going, PC! 👏
Media always portrays/projects actresses as having cat fights and being nasty abt each other! Entertainment News people are as misogynistic as Bollywood!
Why would individually successful actresses always fight with each other? These catfight stories are mostly faked and hyped by the media.
Some actresses do pass nasty comments abt other actresses and we know who they are, the wannabes and brainless brigade.😉
But the successful, intelligent actresses dont always target each other. I know PC always tweets in praise of her contemporaries' movies.
Its the fault of the media who deliberately try to project that image of these women having catfights.

For that matter media doesnt report even half of the dogfights that goes on between actors. 😆

Well she is right about the revolution but I dont think its is completely in place yet. Still a long way to go but the slow gradual process has started. I think she just mentioned the name of ones famous for doing women-centric films.

Ya it is surprising Pee Cee hasnt seen Anus work, because she has worked in some fine films...
but i remember seeing only the promos or bits of Love Sex n Dhoka and
Raagini MMs and thinking here is a very young actor par excellence when i saw Raj Kumar Yadav. This was before Kai Po Che.

Anyway this interview was really good to read, new stuff. not the same ole same ole...there is enough space for everyone, i am rejecting 10 scripts per day, i get along with all my co actors, my heroes are so sweet, ya i look forward to settling down..blah blah same ole same ole which journos seem to ask.

I loved the way she said 'womance' as opposed to 'bromance'. She isnt faking it either. She does get along with Anu and Deepika and kangana.
No tu tu main main here.

Great interview.

_______________

she may have fast forwarded and watched only SRKs parts. Sitting thru a three hour movie for a very busy person is difficult. Especially if the film isnt a 3 idiots or Queen or any sort of benchmark a journo would use as reference while interviewing.

I mean hundreds of films come out...its impossible for anyone to watch them all unless one is retired or on vacation or something. And all other options are out.
