FAT equals UGLY in Society's Eyes: WHY?

I was once fat (read overweight NOT obsese). And I was called all kinds of names by my classmates in high school. Then, one summer, I lost all my extra weight.

When I became thin, people thought I was so attractive and people started treating me differently. But hello?! I was the same person before too! Just because my weight had changed did not mean I had changed as a person. What does that speak about society's perceptions of people? That we care more about looks than personality?

Why do you think our society is obsessed with being thin and attractive to the point where so-called "fat" people are treated differently by people?

i think most (not all)people who gain weight because they do not controle what they eat and they do not move around as much they need to. we all know if we are over weight then it is not healthy for us. if we can not do whatever is good for us then we do not get repect from other people. just like when somebody does not work hard in study and fail people have less repect for that person but they have more repect for people who work hard and succeed. i know people do not think all that but i think it is indirect. i do not want to hurt anybody's feelings iknow this because i have been there myself. i lost lot of weight and still struggle to keep controle on my cravings. pam

Great topic! 😊 I was completely unaware of the things you just mentioned, until I saw some of the clips from this show. It's sad that our society views fat as ugly, and if you're slim you're considered to be beautiful. It's completely wrong. Issues like Anerexia come up due to this. I've seen girls go on a dieting regime and what not just to stay slim.

Instead I say strive to be fit. Again on that most people carry the misconception that if you're slim you're fit which is not necessarily the case.

That's a very interesting perspective! I never personally looked at it that way..

i think media and the fast paced world and environment have a strong role in this perception.
also if the person is obese or overweight due to their eating habbits then clearly how can one expect the society to respect their body and figure when they themselves didnt while bringing this state upon themselves.
Again this post is strictly my opinion and is not meant to hurt or disscourage anyone.

A very interesting question. I never realized this till my mom told me that in Nepal people want you to be a little plump because that is a sign of prosperity but here in the US and Canada and I am sure back in Nepal (nowadays) skinny is considered more attractive. But if you consider being obese as a sign of loosing control, isn't bulimia and anorexia the same thing? Not meaning to hurt anyone just asking a question?
