Chapter 14
"What happened to Ruhi?!"
"Bhai...actually..."
"Romi say something!!" he was getting impatient and worried.
"Ruhi...she's...in the hospital."
Raman's eyes immediately filled up with tears. He took a step back stumbling and fell onto the bench. She held shoulders tightly as her own eyes watered at the thought of the small child being sick. He stared into nothing trying to understand what he had just heard for a moment until he realized he needed to be with her right now.
"I need to go!" he started to check his pockets for his keys which were in his hand the whole time and she knew he could not be left alone right now. And by looking at his state, she wouldn't let him drive at any cost, so she said...
"Raman I am driving you, you aren't going alone!" ordering him and all he could do was nod not able to understand that was happening.
The two of them ran to her car as Romi went to find Mihir and bring him there as well. They rushed into the car worried for Ruhi. Ishita took a deep breath to calm herself and stop crying before she started the car. Ruhi needs Raman right now, and you have to get him there safely, she thought to herself. She started her car with trembling hands and drove off. As she drove silently, she looked over at him. He was lost in his own thoughts as he looked out the window. He didn't know what happened to Ruhi, but he had a horrible feeling about it. He started to cry as he thought about his every moment with Ruhi right from the moment Shagun told him about her pregnancy and he wished for girl to when he first held her to just this morning as he listened to her talk to him happily. He felt a hand on his hand and looked over at her. She assured him with her eyes and he looked at her helplessly and worried before turning back and letting her hand stay on his.
They reached the hospital in 15 minutes and they both ran to the reception. Ishita asked the receptionist about Ruhi and Raman looked around lost. He saw Shagun in a corridor pacing back and forth anxiously. They both ran over to her and Raman asked her right away...
"What happened to Ruhi?!"
She looked at him silently on the verge of crying.
"Shagun please say something!!" Ishita pleaded to her.
"She ate peanuts..." she almost whispered...
"Are you crazy?! You fed her peanuts?!" Raman yelled at her.
"I'm not stupid Raman! It was an accident at her friend's party. I wouldn't feed her anything that was even near peanuts." She yelled back.
"What is happening here?" Ishita asked confused at what they were talking about.
"Ruhi's allergic to peanuts. She has an anaphylaxis reaction if she eats them." Shagun answered crying.
"Where were you and what about her epipen?"
"I wasn't there and she didn't have an epipen with her. I am so sorry Raman. I promised to take care of her. I'm sorry!" she said in between her sobs feeling responsible for Ruhi's state.
Raman didn't say anything neither was he in the state to say anything. He leaned against a wall silently shedding tears hoping his daughter would be okay. He didn't care about what happened and how anymore, all he wanted was for her to okay.
As Ishita consoled Shagun and asked her how everything happened, Raman wanted to see Ruhi. He took slow steps looking down and walked to the window of the room where Ruhi was. He couldn't get himself to look through it and see her, but he couldn't go without seeing her either. He closed his eyes hoping he would be able to bear what he would see and he lifted his head and opened his eyes. What he saw broke his heart, he had only managed to catch a glimpse of her as there were doctors and nurses surrounding her. But that was enough to shatter him, she was laying on the bed hooked up to machines as a nurse came close to her with an injection in her hand & he winced as the needle pierced her skin and he wanted to reach out to her and hug her protecting her from everything possible danger. As he saw her struggle for breath, he couldn't take it anymore. His life was fighting for her own life...
He fell onto the floor sobbing loudly. The two women turned around hearing him and both rushed over to him. Ishita kneeled down next to him and Shagun backed off seeing her. Ishita cupped his face gently with her hand and lifted his head making him face her. She couldn't stop her own tears seeing him break down, but found herself wiping off her tears so she could help him up onto the bench. He was still crying and she just wiped of his tears making him crying more. And without a thought, he hugged her wanting to cry on someone's shoulders and have someone comfort him. Understanding the reason behind his sudden action, she hugged him back making him finally say something...
"Ishita, my Ruhi!"
"Raman no, don't cry please...Shhh nothing will happen, she will be fine." She consoled him as she stroked his back.
He wouldn't stop sobbing and she let him cry as much as he wanted. She remembered what he had said in his drunken state. He was scared of losing his loved ones, and Ruhi was the one he loved the most. She hugged him tighter and silently cried while she continued to stroke his back trying to calm him down. She could feel his tears soaking her shoulder right now and she felt helpless not being able to do anything for him expect pray that Ruhi would be okay.
Meanwhile Romi, Mihir, and Mihika had reached the hospital as well. They saw Ishita and Raman together and wanted to go over to them, but Shagun signalled them to stop and let them be. Seeing Raman trying to compose himself again, they stayed put knowing he was going to okay.
After a few minutes, when he was starting to quiet down and his breathing was starting to become even again, she pulled back from the hug. He looked up at her eyes with no hate, no anger, just fear. She wanted to assure him, but didn't know how. For she herself was scared for Ruhi, she was someone special to her; when she met her for the first time and her cute nature, when she had consoled her and was sympathetic towards her in the park and whenever she brought Raman closer to her, her love for Ruhi grew. Now when she was in this condition, she didn't know what to do or say to help him or herself. All she said to him was...
"Look, our Ruhi will be okay..."
He realized from her tone that she was asking him more than telling him. He looked right into her eyes and they shared the same fear he did. None of them knew what to do or say and all they did was look into each other's eyes hoping to get assurance from the other. Finally after seeing them just look at her each other, Shagun came up to them and told them she was going to the front desk to fill out some papers and asked them to let her know if the doctor came out.
As she walked away, the doors of the room opened and everyone rushed surrounding the doctor that walked out...
