Seventy

His lungs felt like they had frozen, he had a difficult time breathing.

Sanyukta was on the ground, leaning against a bed, looking like a zombie. Mascara was running down her face, and she just stared on. She had a knife in her hands. A bloody knife.

Randhir saw the older man on the ground, face down and dead, with many stab marks across his back, surrounded by a pool of blood.

Randhir ran up to her and grabbed her arm.

"Get up," he said to her.

"I killed someone," Sanyukta said, and fresh tears spilled from her eyes. "I'm a murderer."

"You did it in self-defense, nothing will happen to you," Randhir said to her softly. "You'll be okay."

She shook her head.

"Randhir," she whispered and then dropped the knife to the ground and hugged him tightly.

Randhir held her comfortingly in his arms.

"He tried to rape me," Sanyukta told him and continued to sob.

"Shh, it'll be okay," Randhir told her. "It'll be okay."

"But I got the information I needed to get," she told him.

He wanted to ask her what information, but here was not the place to talk.

"Sanyukta take my car keys and go home, okay?" Randhir told her.

"What?" she gasped. "What about you?"

"I'm going to clean up here... you go," Randhir said. "Go to Rehaan... and tell him that you still want to marry him."

She looked at him, with a confused expression on her face.

"Why?" she asked.

"Just listen to me and trust me," Randhir told her. "Don't tell anyone about this... or about meeting me."

She nodded as he handed her his car keys.

"You'll come right?" she asked him, her voice cracking, glancing back at him.

"Yes, I'll come," Randhir lied.

"Come soon," Sanyukta said, then she turned around and disappeared, still shivering... still traumatized by what happened.

As soon as she left, Randhir wrapped his hand around the handle of the knife tightly.

Then he picked up his phone and dialed the number of the police.

"I murdered someone," Randhir said into the phone, and proceeded to tell the police his whereabouts, as he glanced around the room to make sure there was no evidence of Sanyukta being here.

Seventy One

"Why did you do this?" the inspector asked in the interrogation room.

"Self defense, he was going to kill me," Randhir said to the inspector.

"Mr. Narendra Ahluwalia is a respectable man with a big political influence," the inspector said. "Nobody will believe your excuse that you did this for self defense."

Randhir knew it. This was why he wasn't going to let Sanyukta face it. Whether she got interrogated and used self defense, or he did, it wasn't going to change anything... and he knew that he couldn't put Sanyukta through any of that.

It was better for him to be here than for Sanyukta to. He didn't know whether she'd be able to handle the pressure by being here, and unless there was big evidence that she was exercising self defense, she would be stuck for nothing. He couldn't see her stuck.

Now Randhir wanted her to marry Rehaan... she had no future with him anyways. He wanted her to move on. He wanted her to move forward in her life, and Randhir would happily lay in jail and serve his sentence... whatever it was.

"It is what it is," Randhir told the police officer. "I don't know how to prove it to you, but I did do it for self-defense."

"There are multiple stab wounds on his body," the police officer said. "It proves the attacker was very angry and aggressive. It was not necessary to inflict that much damage."

Randhir sighed.

"Look inspector, I'm not going to change my statement. I did it for self defensive purposes. I met him outside in the alleyway beside his street, and he asked me to come with him... I didn't know why, I don't know what his motive would be to kill me, but as soon as I went to his home, he tried to kill me and I ran into a room... I guess it was his bedroom, and I grabbed his knife and then stabbed him," Randhir said.

"You had the knife... he didn't have a gun. You could have backed out of there and ran," the police officer said. "And you had a cell phone, you could have called us."

"I panicked," Randhir told the officer. "I didn't know how to handle the situation... I was scared for my life."

"What was the need to stab him over and over again in such an aggressive manner?" the inspector asked.

"I panicked... I knew he was a strong man, I didn't want to run from there and then have him kill me," Randhir said.

"Your case is weak," the inspector said. "You have no evidence. But you still confessed to your crime, so that will work in your favour."

Then he got up and handcuffed Randhir before taking him towards the jail cells. Randhir smiled, feeling a little lighter in his heart, that Sanyukta was okay. He would make sure there wasn't even a slight doubt that someone else was involved in Narendra Ahluwalia's murder.

He would perish if he had to, in order to make Sanyukta's world, and the feeling of perishing for your love, was the most amazing feeling.

He couldn't stop smiling.
