Fourty One

Randhir looked down at Sanyukta's tear-filled eyes as she muttered those three words. His heart dropped upon seeing her look at him. She loved him... he knew that. But to hear those three words come out of her mouth, was another feeling completely. His mouth almost moved to repeat those words back to her, but he caught himself in time.

If he told her he loved her too, her hopes would go up unnecessarily. And he didn't love her. So it would be a lie. This lie would hurt her more than anything else.

"I need more wine," she mumbled, listening to his silence.

Randhir picked up the bottle of wine from the side table and filled up her glass again, filling his up too after.

"Why do I forget who I am when I look at you?" he asked her after he placed the bottle of wine back on the table.

"I don't know... but I forget my identity too around you," she responded. "So you aren't alone."

"Maybe we're both crazy," he replied.

"You more than me," she said with a small smile.

"I am not crazy!" he argued.

"At least I'm sure about what I'm doing. I'm not wandering like a lost puppy. I know where my home is, and I'm always at home," she told him, her eyes filling with tears.

"Yeah a home filled with pain," he retaliated. "It's better to be homeless."

"It's not pain though... don't you get it. It's love," she told him softly.

"No I don't get it. Why are you crying if you aren't hurt?" he asked her adamantly.

"Because I love so deeply," she responded. "That the intensity of it brings tears to my eyes."

"That's stupid," he pointed out.

"That's love," she responded with a smile.

"Then love is stupid," he said, feeling his own eyes tear up.

Damn it, why was he tearing up now.

"And we... we're all fools in love," she responded with a smile. "But I wouldn't change it for the world."

"You're stupid too," he said.

"I'm in love, what else would I be?" she asked him playfully.

He smiled a bit and then glanced down at her.

"I'm still not crazy though," he said, sipping his wine. "Damn my tie is tight."

He put his wine glass on the side table and was about to loosen his tie when he felt Sanyukta's fingers brush over his neck lightly, causing him to shiver. He closed his eyes as she slowly loosened his tie for him and unbuttoned the top few buttons of his shirt.

"It's hot eh?" she asked him.

"Mhmmm," he said, feeling high. "You're hot."

"I'm hot?" she asked, sounding amused.

His eyes opened quickly. Shit. Why did he just say that? The alcohol was affecting him far more than he'd like it to.

"I was talking to the... to the air," he said quickly. "The air is hot."

"Alright then," she said, with a wide smile, as if she could see through him. "You know, I had the best time tonight."

She removed her hands from his chest and then rested her head on his shoulder again.

"So did I," he murmured.

Then he placed his hands on Sanyukta's shoulders and pulled her off him slowly, looking her in her deep brown eyes. It was so easy to get lost in them.

He stroked her cheek with one of his hands and he brushed it over her ear before it got lost in her hair. She started to tremble.

"What... is happening?" she asked him, looking up at him.

"Sanyukta... I," he said, feeling his eyes well up with tears, unaware of what he was saying. "I love you too."

Then he leaned towards her and brushed his lips over her soft ones, and kissed her slowly. She was unresponsive for a moment, but then her hands slid up his back and she breathed sharply before responding to his kiss with passion, her lips parting to allow him to deepen it.
