Fourty

When Randhir finished setting up the table, he had to wait for what felt like forever, until Sanyukta entered the dining room.

His mouth nearly dropped open when she did though. She had curled her hair and was wearing a long evening gown. She looked gorgeous. Her makeup was nicely done too.

Shit. What was she doing?

"Hi," she told him, and sat down across from him.

Randhir had already put food for both of them on a plate. Sanyukta had made butternut squash ravioli and salad.

"Hey," Randhir responded softly, engrossed in her beauty.

"Thanks for setting the table and serving," she told him appreciatively.

"Don't mention it," he told her.

He couldn't even hear his own voice... it felt like he was high. A smile formed on his lips as he watched her take a sip of her wine.

She glanced up at him, and looked surprised to see him smiling. She brought her fingers up to her lips.

"Do I have something on my face? Is my makeup bad?" she asked him, self-consciously.

"No... why would you think that?" he asked her.

"You're laughing at me?" she asked him.

"No!" he said quickly. "I was just... smiling."

"You were smiling?" she asked him, curiously. "Why?"

"Um... I don't know," he answered honestly.

Why was he smiling?

Sanyukta smiled at him.

"It's good... I like it when you smile," she told him softly.

Randhir then felt awkward. Right... Sanyukta loved him. He couldn't forget that. Since she loved him, he had to maintain a distance.

"Um yeah okay," he said neutrally.

"Okay," she responded, and picked up her fork and dug it into her pasta. "So... how does it taste?"

He had been so hungry, but in front of her, he had completely forgotten his hunger.

He picked up his fork and put a piece of ravioli in his mouth. It tasted so good... even better than it had smelled earlier.

"It's really good," he told her, feeling like he was in another world completely.

First, Sanyukta came down, looking so breathtakingly beautiful, and now this ravioli was out of the world... he didn't know if he'd be able to stop himself from kissing Sanyukta's hands for making it.

"I'm glad you like it," she told him with a smile. "I made it with a lot of lov - uh... a lot of thought."

Randhir gulped down his ravioli and looked up at her. He knew she was about to say love, and then changed it to thought.

"I... I can tell," he said, in an effort to appease the tension a little bit.

She smiled and then Randhir went back to devouring the ravioli.

Once they had finished eating their ravioli and had finished drinking their glass of wine, Randhir stood up and took both of their plates.

"I'll clean the dishes," he told her.

It was the least he could do. He was going to break it to her that he was leaving tomorrow... and to make it a little less painful for her, maybe he could wash the dishes? Perhaps that was an excuse. He wanted to make it less painful for himself.

"Oh... no, don't worry about it," Sanyukta told him. "I'll put them in the dishwasher."

Randhir nodded, trying to think of ways to tell her that he was going to leave tomorrow.

Once she had loaded the dishwasher, she came back out and smiled at him.

"Um... Sanyukta," he said, trying to find the words. "I... am... I'm leaving tomorrow morning."

She looked up at him with shock.

"Leaving?" she asked him, as if she was confirming what she thought.

"Yeah... I'm going to leave here. Our dates are over, and it doesn't make sense for me to stay here anymore," he told her, feeling his own heart break.

She nodded, but he could see her eyes glisten with tears.

"Yeah... no problem," she told him with a forced smile.

"I'll be gone before you wake up," he told her.

"Oh... okay... I won't bother you. Don't worry," she told him.

Then she turned her back to him, and Randhir could tell that she was crying. Oh how his heart broke to see her like this. He didn't want her to be in pain. He didn't want her to be hurt. But he had no choice. What he was doing was for her. And for himself. It was for them both.

"Don't you... feel upset that you invested so much in me and I'm walking away, just like that?" he asked her.

He didn't know why he asked her that question. He didn't know what he was expecting. Maybe he wanted her to say don't go... maybe he wanted her to be selfish. Maybe he wanted her to ask him to stay back for her sake... and maybe if she asked him, he would stay back, but she wasn't asking him. She was telling him to go. She was saying she would support his decision, no matter what the consequences were for her.

"No," she responded to him, her back still facing him. "I'm happy... I'm happy that I got to spend this much time with you."

"You still love me?" he asked her. "Even after I've only given you reasons to hate me?"

He watched as she took a deep breath and nodded.

"Yes," she responded.

Then she turned around to face him, a smile on her face.

"You know what they call it when hostages hold sympathy for the one who abducted them? Stockholm syndrome," he told her.

"Randhir, whether it's Stockholm syndrome or something else, I don't care. I know what I feel... and I don't need to explain that to anyone, including you," she told him softly.

He frowned. She was out of her mind. And so was he... for explaining this to her. He should have known by now that she was going to be like this.

"You are so stubborn," he told her.

"So are you," she responded. "It takes a stubborn person to recognize another stubborn one."

He folded his arms. How was he stubborn?

"I am not stubborn," he told her.

"You trying to convince me over and over again to get over you is not you being stubborn?" she asked him. "Why don't you just drop it."

"Why don't you?" he argued.

"I will drop it once you do," she told him with a smile.

"Okay," he said, sighing resignedly.

"Okay," she said lightly, a smile playing on her lips.

He looked at her, feeling his heart breaking at the thought of saying good night. He didn't know if he'd ever see her again. The idea of leaving had seemed so perfect in his mind, but now that it was being put to action, he was feeling sad. He didn't want to leave. While he did believe that he would somehow be brought back to her, he didn't want to risk it. He wanted to stay here with her.

No. He couldn't. It would be too dangerous for her.

"Randhir... I know... this might seem like a far-fetched request. You can say no if you aren't comfortable, but... I would like it if you spent the night in my room... I mean just talking! This may be the last night we'll have together... and we'll just have wine and talk... until one of us falls asleep," she told him.

He didn't have the heart to say no, especially when he wanted to spend as much time with her as possible too.

"This is the last night we'll have together," he mumbled. "So... I guess... it's fair... but, only talking. Nothing else."

"I know," she told him softly. "I just want to talk too. I just want to spend some time with you."

"It might be harder for you to let go of me though, if you come so close," he pointed out.

"Maybe it will be Randhir, but my heart won't agree. I just... I just want to talk to you and not worry about anything else. We'll just talk until our hearts are satisfied. As friends. That's it," she said.

"Okay," he told her in response, looking at the helplessness in her eyes.

She was trying so hard to not be hurt that he was leaving, and he could only imagine the pain she was going through. It must be a billion times worse than the sinking feeling he was feeling right now.

Why was he even hurt?

He picked up two wine glasses and a bottle of wine and followed her up to her room.

He poured them both wine and they sat next to each other on her bed.

"So..." he said, taking a sip of his wine.

She rested her head on his shoulder and Randhir felt his eyes tear up. This wouldn't happen again. He would never get this opportunity ever again. Why was he so upset?

"Thank you," she said to him.

"No... thank you," he said hoarsely.

"Why?" she asked him softly.

"I don't know," he mumbled. "Just... for being in my life."

"You're thanking me?" she asked him.

"Yeah, I don't know why," he responded, as he took another sip of wine.

"I don't either," she said and giggled. "Randhir, remember PKC sir from college?"

"Yes," he said with a smile. "What about him?"

"He was so funny wasn't he? We would always make him a fool," she said, giggling. "And he would fall for our tricks."

"I wish I got to know you in college," he muttered involuntarily.

"You did know me," she said with a smile. "You knew me as Sanyukta the s**t."

"I'm sorry," he said softly. "For everything."

"Don't apologize... I brought it on myself. It isn't your fault," she said to him.

"You're... you're so sweet," he said, taking another sip of wine. "I never told you... you're pretty and you're sweet and you're amazing Sanyukta. You're amazing. And trust me, the man you fall in love with is going to be one lucky man... but he just isn't me."

"He isn't you?" Sanyukta asked him, her voice trembling. "Randhir he is you. He was always you."

Randhir could tell that she was slightly buzzed by the tone her voice took, and he could tell that the buzz was starting to hit him too.

"I love you," she said to him, tears in her eyes, and total sincerity in her voice. "I love you so much Randhir."
