Chapter 4:
"Do not judge the book by its cover!"
He watched her retreating figure till she disappeared from his sight with a stony face not giving away one single emotion. Immediately the engine roared and Raman drove away. He knew where he was heading. The only place where he would go to indulge in his favourite pastime. Raman was drinking and drowning away all his hate, anger and frustrations when he got a call from Mihir asking where he was and why he disappeared from the party without even informing him.
Today he had been the biggest of jerks and wasn't it celebration time? He wanted to say but only mumbled something to Mihir and disconnected the phone. Sitting at the bar, his whisky in hand, he found himself thinking of her.
The moment Mihir had pointed out to Mihika Iyer, he had heard a thud inside his chest cavity. Mihika IYER!
And then he had seen her...no...only her back but it was enough for him. The same generous silhouette, those long and shiny locks...It was her! Her running away from there only confirmed his suspicion.
Dammit! Why did he have to follow and confront her? It was over between them as per his wish, terms and conditions. Then what was wrong with him? He didn't want commitment and she went away without any fuss. Then why on earth did he follow her and insist to drop her home? What bit him to call her an opportunist and man handled her?
What bloody point he wanted to prove by kissing her? She was not indifferent? Why bother!
His mind went to what had happened in the car.
His anger had been stretched to the limit when she had talked about indifference for him, forcing him to grab her by the arms. That was his undoing! His body had felt like a torch as he had pressed closer to her. Even in anger he had felt it- the desire for her was still there, it was even more after seeing her after six long months. What was it about that woman that set his pulse racing and every nerve on edge?
That annoying and preaching woman!
Unable to control his own body, he had claimed her lips. When he had broken the kiss he was as taken aback as she was. Looking at her startled eyes, he saw a myriad of emotions closely mirroring each other...Anger, hate, desire or...love. It was hard to tell what she was feeling.
He had immediately released her arms because he on the other hand had realized what he was feeling...
Furious with himself, he had drove back with a poker face while his heart was racing with his nerves like raw wires.
Raman gulped another shot of whisky and swore under his breath.
Raman had neither an explanation for the rush of adrenaline he felt when he saw her at the party nor for his callous behavior in the car. He was always a temperamental man but ever since that woman stepped into his life, he had had a much harder time keeping his temper under check. She had in it in her to turn him half tempered and half mental since the beginning...
He shouldn't have phoned at the damn clinic to get an appointment after their first meeting.
*****
After their argument in front of the clinic, she accepted to treat Raman. Once in her cabin and under anesthesia, Raman completely dozed off and had no idea when the treatment started and ended. He only knew that he was helped by the security guard to get inside his car in a groggy state.
The next morning however, he was surprised to see himself in bed, in his apartment. He woke up with a terrible hangover and had a mild pain in his left jaw. Immediately his mind went to what had happened the previous night. He remembered fighting with that lady dentist and then once in her cabin, he had lost count of the turns of events. His eyes went to the side table to look at the time when he found it under his mobile.
A medical prescription with a note attached to it!
Mr Bhalla you had a root canal last night. Please call at the clinic to take an appointment for next week to complete the treatment. Be careful with the tooth. Take the prescribed meds and yes...avoid alcohol for a few days if possible. Medication and alcoholic drinks are a deadly combination.
Doctor Iyer.
Iyer! Madrassan! Raman made a face and dumped the note on the table and mumbled. Medication and alcoholic drinks a deadly combination! Annoying preaching female!
But he was still perplexed. Who dropped him home? Did that doctor Iyer go to so much trouble? Can't be! The way she was glaring at him last night and maintaining the distance between them...as if he was a bacterial carrier.
But if she did then...Raman would make sure that he didn't remain indebted to that woman.
The next day he indeed called at the clinic for the appointment. It was then the secretary informed him that Doctor Iyer has handed his file to a certain Abhimanyu Raghav and he would take up from there.
Not only annoying but also full of attitude! Raman Bhalla was no man to accept favors and definitely not from a woman. He immediately asked to talk to DOCTOR IYER but the secretary informed him that it would not be possible because HER ROYAL HIGHNESS was busy.
One week later...
- I am really sorry Mr Bhalla. You are late. Doctor Raghav waited for you for one hour and has just left. You will have to come back tomorrow.
Raman was not angry. He left an important meeting midway to come here. He roared with annoyance.
- Are you kidding me? I asked my secretary to inform you that I would be late...
- But Sir, doctor Raghav had an important meeting...
- What a bunch of unprofessional you people are! One dentist starts a treatment and hands it over to another without even bothering to contact and inform the patient...
- Will you please stop shouting? You are in a clinic!
Raman turned around and there she was, folding her arms across her chest with that same look saying - The bacterial carrier is here! Dismissing Raman, she moved to the secretary to inform her that she would look after the patient and moved to her cabin without a word with Raman following her.
Raman was quite impressed. Doctor Iyer was good at her job. He was always freaked out about injections but he didn't even realize when she did it. He found himself having second thoughts about her. In between the treatment, a patient had called and the way she was talking to her on the phone...she was not only a professional but a nice person too.
Thirty minutes later they were back in her cabin sitting and facing each other.
- Are you feeling better?
- Thank you. For today and...for the other day.
- Welcome. It's...my job.
- To drop patients in drunk state at their place?
- I couldn't leave a patient in my cabin all night.
Raman learnt that she got his business card from his jacket and from there called Abhimanyu Raghav to help her. They dropped him home and she left the note for him.
Hmmm! Was that Abhimanyu Raghav her boyfriend? Could be! He shrugged. His eyes then went to the name card on her table.
Miss Ishita Iyer! She had her head down, penning his report and Raman could get a glance of her. She was not that bad. Long shiny hair, a flawless skin, quite an attractive mouth...
Her voice ripped him from his assessment and he shifted his attention to what she was saying.
- Mr Bhalla here is your file where I have jotted down what further dental treatment you need. It is up to you to decide when, where and with whom you want it done.
- I want you!
- What?
- I mean I want it done with you...errr...by you.
- I told you before I am a pediatric dentist and...
- I am fine with it. I want an appointment.
- I am not the secretary. Please contact her for a date.
- I don't want a date with your secretary but with you.
- Excuse me?
Did he just say that? She looked horrified.
What the hell is wrong with you Raman? What nonsense are you talking with this dentist? She is neither your type and neither the type you go out with. Raman kicked himself mentally.
But then... to hell with common sense. This woman intrigued him for unknown reasons.
- Let's have coffee one of those days.
- I don't go for coffees with my patients.
- Then give my case to that Abhimanyu Raghav. I won't be your patient.
- I am not interested Mr Bhalla.
- Are you afraid of me or what? I told you last time. I don't force myself on women and you are not my type. It is just my way to thank you for all the trouble last week. Raman Kumar Bhalla hissaab ke bare pakke hain. I don't remain indebted to anybody. Tomorrow at four?
There was a short silence and Raman was not sure what was going in that head of hers.
- I have an appointment at four but 3 pm is fine.
- See u at Coffee Lovers tomorrow then.
With a lopsided smile, Raman walked towards the door while Ishita looked on with a serious expression.
What an arrogant and rude individual he was!He bluntly told her that she was not her type but wanted to go take her for coffee! Who talks this way to woman? Only a brat...a Ravan!
Affaire a suivre...😳
