Nineteen

The next evening, Randhir waited for her downstairs in the hallway leading outside. She came downstairs dressed in an elegant even gown, black in colour, hugging the curves of her body. Randhir's face brightened as soon as he saw her. She was beautiful.

"You look nice," he said, and she smiled in response, looking down at the ground and blushing.

He held the door open for her and she stepped outside. Randhir followed her. After locking the door, he took her to the house car that her company provided for her.

"Do you mind if we use this?" he asked her softly.

She shook her head.

"It's all yours," she said and handed him the car keys.

He opened the passenger door for her and she sat down in the passenger seat, a smile on her face. Randhir couldn't deny that it was nice to see her happy... it warmed his heart.

As soon as he sat in the driver's seat and started to drive, he thought of what to talk about with her. The purpose was to get to know each other. How was he supposed to get to know her? Ask her questions about herself?

"Randhir," Sanyukta said after a long period of silence. "What are you thinking about?"

"Nothing," Randhir said quickly.

"Okay," she said softly.

He continued to drive towards the restaurant that he had reserved seats at - it was a high end restaurant, someplace that he was sure she would like.

"Where are we going?" she asked him, after another few moments of silence.

"You'll see," he told her.

"Okay," she said again.

Then she turned around to look outside the window, and Randhir realized that he was either making her feel uncomfortable and awkward or he was really boring her.

"Do you want to listen to music?" he asked her.

"Oh... no," she replied, still looking outside of the window.

"Okay," he responded.

So far, it was quite obvious that they weren't compatible at all. When they couldn't even find things to talk about, how were they supposed to be in a relationship?

"So how is Mumbai?" he finally asked, deciding to make some light conversation.

"Nice," Sanyukta replied immediately. "It's just like home. It was a bit hard at first, because I knew nobody... then a few months later Kaustuki came to Mumbai too, because she got a good job here, and we lived together, but she got married two months ago, so I'm alone."

Kaustuki lived here? So someone else that they knew from their college was here too?

"It's good you had company," he told her.

"Yes, I'm so glad," she responded gratefully. "It was a lot of fun and she was there to support me. She's a great friend."

"Mhm," Randhir replied.

He never really spoke to Kaustuki back in college. But then again, he hadn't really spoken to Sanyukta either.

He pulled up in front of the restaurant and stepped outside before he walked over to the passenger side of the car and held the door open for her. He held his hand out for her to take, and she took it as she stood up.

"Thank you," she said, smiling at him gratefully.

She let go of his hand and they walked beside each other, their shoulders touching, into the restaurant.

Their date was waiting for them, and Randhir was starting to get nervous and he didn't even know why. It was like he had three chances to not mess up... not that he cared about messing up. Why would he care so much if the date ended up disastrous? It wasn't like he was serious about Sanyukta Agarwal. No way. But... if that was the case, then why was he so nervous right now?

Twenty

After they ordered their food, Randhir looked down at his napkin, awkwardly tapping his fingers against the table, unsure of what to say or how to speak to her.

"This is a nice place," Sanyukta said, breaking the silence.

Randhir nodded.

"Yeah, I thought you'd like it," he said.

He had done a lot of research online to figure out which restaurants were Mumbai's finest. This one had the best reviews.

"I didn't tell you this earlier, but I think you look really nice too," she said, blushing slightly.

Randhir smiled at her, feeling a warm feeling fill him up when she blushed.

"Thanks," he said.

The waiter brought them glasses of water and then left them alone.

"So... how's work?" he asked her.

"It's good," she told him. "Everyone's really nice and I'm glad I got placed it Mumbai... I don't think I would have liked it any more anywhere else."

"Oh," Randhir said.

"How is work for you?" she asked him.

"Good... I'm going to leave soon and start my own business though with my co-worker," he explained. "We want to set up our first location in Mumbai."

"The market is good here," she told him approvingly.

He felt satisfied that she approved for some reason.

"Yeah, that's what I thought too," he told her. "That's why I'm looking at plots here."

"How's it going?" she asked him.

"It's going well. I liked the plots I've looked at so far, and so has my co-worker," he explained.

Then the waiter brought them their food and two plates. Randhir started to serve the food on the plates and Sanyukta looked up at him, looking surprised.

"Thanks," she said gratefully.

He saw her eyes light up - almost like she had seen another side of him... one she never expected to see.

They started to eat in silence. Once they had both finished their meals, Randhir paid the bill and they both started to walk outside.

"Thanks Randhir," Sanyukta said appreciatively.

"Oh, don't mention it," he said, opening the passenger door of the car for her.

After she sat inside, he closed her door and got into the driver's seat. He started to drive.

That was an awfully boring date... it was filled with awkwardness and it was way too formal for his liking, but he just didn't know how else to behave!

"So how was it?" she asked him softly as he drove.

"Um... good I guess," he said. "How about for you?"

"It was great," she told him, smiling.

She called that great? She clearly didn't have high expectations.

"Why did you think that was great?" he asked her. "I mean... wasn't it formal? Boring?"

"Maybe you thought it was boring Randhir. But, I was having a good time. For me, being with you in silence is the same as laughing with you," she explained. "Plus... I saw another side of you. I got to know you better."

"How?" he asked her, completely caught off guard, because as far as he knew, he was being way too formal today.

"The way you held the door open for me, the way you took me to an expensive restaurant, the way you served me my food. Randhir, you're not as bad as they said you were," she told him lightly.

"What?" he asked, surprised. "Like they said I was?"

She giggled.

"In college," she told him. "Everyone said you used girls. They said you were a gentleman until you got them in bed, but after that you paid them no attention."

Randhir bit down on his lip to prevent himself from swearing at himself, feeling extremely embarrassed right now.

"Anyways, for me it seems like the opposite," she told him. "You were rude to me before you took me to bed. After you took me to bed, you've only ever been nice to me."

Why was she so open about her feelings? She had no problem discussing the past? This was so embarrassing for him.

"It's because I didn't know you were a virgin," he told her in response. "I thought you had slept around with many people."

"Whatever the reason Randhir, you still took me to bed, but you never got rid of me completely, like you got rid of every other girl you slept with," she told him. "You always came closer and closer to me... and you never needed to."

Damn Sanyukta, he wanted to scream. That was only because I wanted to know more about you! I didn't actually love you!

But he was too cowardly to say that. He let her live in her fictitious world, in her dream world, where he was some gentleman.

It was like they said - those who saw others as beautiful, were beautiful inside themselves. She saw sweetness in him, only because she herself was so sweet. She couldn't identify the part of Randhir who was using her, who had been playing with her feelings for his own selfish motives, because she didn't have that quality inside herself. She was too good... too sweet to even know what that meant.

"Sanyukta, nobody is perfect," he answered. "Not even me."

"I know," she said softly, reaching out to take his hand, leaving him to drive with with one hand on the steering wheel. "But I just can't find an imperfection... is that my fault?"

He felt guilty. He should get out of here. She was too good. Too innocent. He shouldn't be playing with her - he really shouldn't. He didn't even know what he himself wanted, how was he supposed to give her what she wanted?

"Then you don't know me," he answered. "If you can't find an imperfection in me, then you don't know me."

"I don't even know myself Randhir, so what's your point?" she asked him sternly. "That's why we're going on these dates... so I can get to know you."

Why was it that she had a good counter-argument to everything he said to her? He hated losing.

"Okay, fine," he said, surrendering, not sure how else to finish this. "I'm a gentleman. Happy?"

She smiled up at him.

"Yes," she said softly, as he pulled into their driveway.

Then without another word, she opened the passenger door and went to unlock the door to the house as he followed her from behind. As soon as they both stepped inside and took off their shoes, Sanyukta looked up at him gratefully.

"Thank you so much for the date. Trust me - I thought it was amazing," she told him. "Text me if you want... good night."

Then she walked up the stairs, leaving him alone in the entrance hall. He watched her go in awe.

She was serious about this not seeing each other business. He walked up the stairs to his own room and then went to bed, exhausted and completely confused.

So different, Sanyukta's so intriguing! What's going on? I don't blame RD for being so messed out of his head! Great chapters!
