CHAPTER 12. NAANIJI! MEET YOUR BAHU! ERRR... MY STUDENT!
"Waise... Anjali bitiya tum Khushi ke liye...", Naaniji was about to question when Aakash cut her off, "Daadiji! English please!"
Naaniji huffed, "Haan! Haan! Pata hai! I will speak in English! So Anjali bitiya! Why were you buying dresses for Khushi?", Naaniji questioned as she took a sip out of her tea. Once the explanation was done, her grandchildren managed to convince her to stay for dinner with Arnav promising to drop her home and soon Khushi had her enjoying tea and the company of her grandchildren.
"We had ordered some classy, elegant dresses and sarees for Khushi few days back. The designer had gotten the measurements at that time and now I got the clothes back.", Anjali answered. She pointed to her bag, "But this bag does not contain all of them. These are just samples!"
"Samples?", Khushi looked at Anjali in confusion and Anjali explained, "The designer has designed a sample dress in specific style taking in your height, weight, figure and other things. She has to see whether the style suits you or not. It should enhance your beauty and emphasise your plus points you see. So this has sample salwar kameez and a Saree for her! If it suits you, she will design all your clothes based on the sample!"
"Arre waah!", Naaniji exclaimed, "This is so good. Khushi bitiya! Go! Try the salwar kameez right away and show us!"
"Kya?", Khushi looked at Naaniji in shock, "Nahi nahi Naaniji!"
"Arre! What nahi nahi? Come on Khushi! Be a sport!", Aakash urged but Khushi shyly looked down. Naaniji smiled at the scene. Aakash and Khushi are so good friends! Yes! This Jodi will be very good!
"Come on Khushi! Please!", Anjali pleaded too but Khushi continued to refuse, "Nahi! Humein Naaniji ke saamne sharam aa rahi hai! I am feeling so shy!"
Naaniji smiled curiously, "Arre bitiya! What is there to be shy about?"
Khushi simply looked down.
Arnav had enough of this yes-no, yes-no game, "Khushi! Go and change! And that's an order!"
Anjali and Aakash rolled their eyes while Khushi nodded softly. This was usual to them; Arnav ordering Khushi and being generally rude to her. But it was not usual for Naaniji. How rude! Naaniji thought as she looked at her grandson. I did not raise my grandson to be this rude! Hey Devi Maiyya! She turned to take in the other three's expressions and her quick mind put two and two together. The other three's reactions told her that this was something usual! Is this how Arnav treats Khushi on daily basis? She was shocked by this realization.
The moment Khushi left to her room, Naaniji signaled Anjali to come closer. And when Anjali sat by her, Naaniji whispered, "Is Arnav always this rude to Khushi? I mean I know he is generally an anti-social person, but he was never this disrespectful to women!"
Anjali shook her head, "Chote does not respect Khushi, Naaniji!"
Naaniji frowned, "But why?"
Anjali huffed, "Because she is just a waitress!"
Naaniji shook her head, "That's it? Humne Arnav bitwa ko aisan naahi paala tha! (I did not raise Arnav to be like this!)"
Anjali shrugged, "Chote has turned very arrogant Naaniji! He sees Khushi as beneath his status and that's why he refuses to respect her!"
Naaniji frowned in anger, "This is wrong! Arnav bitwa ee theek naahi karat hain! Kisi ko unke status ke nazariye se dekhna galat hai! (Arnav is not doing right here! It is wrong to judge someone based on their status!) I hope you and Aakash atleast treat her normally!"
Anjali grinned at that, "Of course Naaniji! We love her! Infact, Aakash and Khushi have become really good friends!"
Naaniji smiled at that. Aakash and Khushi are good friends! Hey Devi Maiyya! She smiled dreamily as she started imagining Aakash and Khushi's marriage and junior Aakashs and Khushis running around the house.
Few minutes passed and Naaniji had yet to come out of her dreamland. Suddenly she heard a gasp from Anjali and she turned to look at her but Anjali's attention was focused on the stairs. Naaniji frowned and turned to see what had made Anjali gasp only to be shocked herself. There stood Khushi in a beautiful white and blue colored chudidaar with embroidery on the front looking as regal as some princess. Her hair, usually pulled back and plaited, was left open and they fell down her shoulder in waves. Her eyes sparkled and while her cheeks were flushed with excitement. She is so pretty! Naaniji mused but then Khushi smiled and her whole face glowed and Naaniji amended her earlier statement. No! Not just pretty! She is beautiful! "Bikul pari jaisi! (Just like fairy!)", Naaniji whispered. "Yes Naaniji!", Naaniji heard Aakash speak up and Naaniji turned to see Aakash grin at Khushi and give her a thumbs up. Aakash ko bhi Khushi pari jaisi lagi? (Even Aakash finds Khushi fairy like?) Haaye!
Just at that moment Arnav, who was reading the newspaper, frowned in confusion. Who is looking like fairy? Yeh Naani kya bol rahi hai? He looked up and he felt his breath stop. He got up from his seat in a trance and simply stared at the vision in front of him. The newspaper slipped out of his hand and fell on the floor but he did not even notice it. All he could do was stare at her. Arnav had seen Khushi dressed in cocktail waitress uniform and in simple salwar kameez and while he knew she was pretty he had always pegged her beauty as average. But today dressed in an ethnic salwar kameez, she looked like a royal princess and Arnav could not look away from her.
"Arnav bitwa! What do you thin...", Naaniji turned to talk to Arnav but was shocked to see him standing. Her eyes widened as she took in his expression. She smiled mischievously. Arre waah! Arnav bitwa pehli baar kisi ladki is tarah dekhat hain! (First time Arnav is looking at a girl like this!) Kahin unhein Khushi... With excitement she looked towards Khushi.
By then Khushi finally had got down the stairs and stood in front of them. Excited about her new get up her eyes kept flitting from one person to another and hence, she did not notice Arnav's gaping expression.
"Arre! Koi toh kuch bolo! Someone please say something. How do I look?", Khushi muttered nervously. By then Aakash and Anjali had stood up and now they made their way to Khushi eagerly.
"You look perfect Khushi! Simply perfect!", Anjali chirped and hugged her.
"Wow! Khushi! Fantastic transformation! Awesome makeover!", Aakash exclaimed.
Khushi grinned happily and shook Aakash's hand.
That is when Naaniji stepped forward and cupped her cheeks, "Haaye! Kitni pyaari lag rahi ho! How pretty!" Khushi blushed while looking at Naaniji shyly.
Finally Khushi looked away from everybody and looked at Arnav who simply stared at her and did not say a single word. Khushi bit her lip in worry. Was she looking horrible? Was she looking bad? Hey Devi Maiyya!
"Arnav Bitwa! Say something!", Naaniji prompted and Arnav came out of his thoughts.
"Uh... You... You are looking...", Arnav cleared his throat while looking away.
Aakash, Anjali and Naaniji looked with excitement at Arnav. They were sure that Arnav will praise Khushi. After all, she did look very beautiful. Khushi, on the other hand, was nervous. What if she was not looking good and Arnav refused to train her anymore?
"You are looking alright!", Arnav finally spat out in a gruff voice. Khushi heaved a sigh of relief while other three deflated. That's it? Only alright? They were so not happy. Khushi was happy though because she knew that getting a word out of Arnav's mouth which did not sound disparaging was praise in itself.
But while Khushi was happy, others weren't and while Naaniji remained quiet, still stuck at the part where Arnav was literally drooling while looking at Khushi, Anjali and Aakash refused to remain quiet and rose to defend their new friend.
"Alright Bhai? That's it? She is looking like an angel and you are saying simply alright?" Aakash was aghast at his brother. Is he blind or what?
"Sachchi Chote! This is ridiculous. If not beautiful, atleast say she looks good. What is this alright business?", Anjali was very miffed at Arnav and she let him know it.
"Its Ok!", Khushi's voice broke in and Aakash and Anjali turned to look at her. Khushi nodded at them while smiling tenderly, "Its ok! I don't have any problem!"
"But..." Anjali tried to complain but Khushi cut her off, "Anjaliji! Its ok! Chod do! Leave it! I will go and change!"
Aakash and Anjali sighed in defeat, giving up on their quest to scold Arnav.
After few minutes, Khushi came back dressed in her usual salwar kameez and Anjali stopped her, "Khushi! Why did you change into this? You have to try the Saree too remember?"
Khushi pouted, "Can we do it later? You all must be tired and hungry. Maybe tomorrow?"
Anjali nodded, "Fine! But tomorrow, after everyone has left for work, you and I are going to check out that Saree!"
Khushi agreed and both headed to the dining table.
Later, everyone sat around the table and enjoyed the food.
"Waah! Kya Naan hain!", Aakash exclaimed as he enthusiastically chomped down the Butter Naan.
"Haan! This is very delicious! And the Shahi Korma is simply out of world!", Naaniji agreed.
Suddenly, Arnav called out for the cook and once the cook came, Arnav spoke, "Wow! Shyamlal! You have cooked really well today!"
The cook frowned and Naaniji piped in, "Haan haan! Naan and Shahi Korma are really good! And the Biryani... Lajawab! I am very impressed!"
The Cook opened his mouth to say something when Aakash jumped in, "Haan Shyamlal! You have cooked so well, if you were a girl, I would have kissed you!"
Khushi's eyes widened while Anjali could not resist herself, "But Shyamlal did not cook today!"
"Kya?", Arnav, Aakash and Naaniji said at once.
"Toh kaun? Who cooked this?", Naaniji questioned.
Anjali grinned eagerly, "It was Khushi!"
"Arre waah!"
"Sachchi?"
Naaniji and Aakash spoke while Arnav remained silent.
Anjali nodded and then snickered, "Aakash! You said you will kiss the cook, now why don't you kiss Khushi?"
Anjali burst out laughing as Khushi turned red while Aakash ducked his head shyly. Naaniji looked at Aakash in amusement wondering what he will do next. No one noticed Arnav's hand tightening on his spoon or his eyes glaring at his plate.
Anjali continued to laugh when she suddenly stopped in shock as Aakash got up from his seat and moved towards Khushi, his jaw tight with determination. Arnav looked up while Khushi's eyes widened. Naaniji blinked in shock while Anjali's jaw dropped open. Aakash walked towards Khushi and bend down on his knees in front of her. Khushi gulped. Aakash lifted her hand and placed a kiss on the back of it surprising everyone. Then he got up and smiled at his family impishly, "I said I will kiss her, but did not specify where!"
Naaniji and Anjali broke out laughing while Khushi smiled bashfully. Aakash got back to his seat and grinned at everyone. Again, no one noticed Arnav letting out a sigh of relief.
Naaniji looked from Aakash to Arnav and back to Aakash in worry. She had the biggest question in front of her. Who was Khushi better with? Who was the better life partner for her? Arnav or Aakash? If she was planning to match make, she had to choose her bakra...err... her grandson. And she had to decide soon. Because Khushi was one of the kind! Naaniji was sure that sooner or later, someone would see her qualities and marry her. The girl was beautiful, polite and best of all, cooked. The girls of these days very rarely cooked. No! This girl was a gem and she had to snag Khushi for her family before someone else takes her away. But who is right for her? Arnav who is rude with her but is also attracted to her or Aakash who is just friendly with her and not attracted but treats her like a girl and not someone beneath his status? Naaniji was confused and continued to try finding the answer.
Arnav looked down in annoyance. He did not know why but the moment Anjali mentioned Aakash kissing Khushi, he felt hatred blaze through his mind for his brother. Why? He did not understand. And even though Aakash did not kiss on lips but on hand, Arnav continued to fume in anger. But he could not understand why.
"Chalo Bitwa! I am leaving! I am already so late! Arnav bitwa! Drop me home please!" Naaniji muttered later as they sat on the sofa in the living room.
"Nahi Naaniji! Don't go na! Why don't you stay here tonight?", Anjali asked in pleading tone.
"But beta...", Naaniji spoke but Aakash cut her off, "Please Daadiji ruk jaayiye na!"
Naaniji was not sure and that's when Arnav spoke, "Naani! Please stay! You can go back tomorrow morning!"
Naaniji smiled and nodded. When her favorite grandson told her to stay who was she to say no?
Khushi cheered and soon Naaniji, Anjali and Khushi retired to their rooms.
Arnav left for his study and stayed there going through his files but for once his mind was not in his work. He was thinking about how Aakash had kissed Khushi's hand. How dare he! He went and kissed her hand! Is that how you are supposed to behave with a girl? So uncouth! Girls are supposed to be treated with respect. Not in such disrespectful manner! Arnav conveniently forgot how horrible he himself treated Khushi. He continued to fume in his mind when Aakash entered the room. Poor Aakash!
"Bhai! Did you see my tender file here? I was working on it and need to put it into my bag for tomorrow...", Aakash was cut off.
"How dare you! How dare you interrupt me! Can't you see I am working here? I am busy Aakash! You are being so immature these days! And no manner at all! I am not happy with you...", Arnav continued to shout.
Aakash took one look at his angry brother, turned tail and ran away. He was not foolish to take on Arnav Singh Raizada, especially when he was in angry avatar. No thank you! He loved his life too much to take such risk! Once he reached his room, he frowned in confusion. But why was Bhai angry at me? What did I do? Aakash scratched his head but he did not get his answer.
"Achcha Chote! What are your plans for Khushi next?", Naaniji asked next morning on the breakfast table. She was planning to leave for her house after having breakfast with her grandchildren.
Arnav frowned, "Nothing much. In few months, there is the Annual Gala coming up. I will introduce her there and that will decide the outcome of our bet. Till then training Khushi is my priority."
"What do you think about giving Khushi a trial run? You know test drive?", Naaniji asked.
Aakash, Anjali and Khushi looked at Naaniji curiously and Arnav replied, "Get to the point Naani. What do you want?"
Naaniji huffed, "Why do you think I want something?"
Arnav rolled his eyes, "Because I know you!"
Naaniji pouted, "Theek hai! I will get to the point. No need to be so snarky about it.", Naaniji grumbled and continued, "In two weeks, there is a party. It is thrown by my friend Vidisha..."
"I knew it!", Arnav shouted loudly making everyone around him jump, "I knew it! You want me to come to the party and meet a girl right? Who is it? Your friend's daughter? Or her niece? Whoever she is I don't care! I don't want to..."
"That would be enough!", Naaniji roared cutting Arnav off, "The world does not revolve around you! Not everything is about you!"
Arnav huffed and folded his arms against his chest while Anjali and Aakash snickered amongst themselves. Khushi looked at the grandson and the grandmother with wide eyes not used to seeing calm and polite Naaniji shout or Arnav being browbeaten by someone.
"Exactly Chote! The world does not revolve around you! Maybe Naaniji wants a bride for Aakash. Have you ever thought about that?", Anjali asked Arnav.
Arnav blinked, looking surprised and Anjali's jaw dropped open, "You seriously did not consider that Naaniji would want to find a bride for Aakash? What do you think? He wants to be a lifelong bachelor like you?"
Aakash opened his mouth to say something, when Arnav piped in, "Of course! Aakash is smart. He is not foolish enough to go and marry a dumb rich heiress and be tangled in the matrimonial shackles!"
Khushi looked at Arnav in horror. Matrimonial shackles? Marriage is such a beautiful thing and he calls them shackles? Hey Devi Maiyya!
While Khushi remained silent, the rest continued to argue.
"Matrimonial shackles? I don't think Aakash thinks like that! I think Aakash wants to get married one day. Haina Aakash?", Anjali questioned as she looked at Aakash. Aakash looked at Anjali and Arnav both, confused as with whom he should agree. If he agreed with Arnav, Anjali would be disappointed with him, and if he went with his thinking he will agree with Anjali and offend Arnav. Hey Khushi ki Devi Maiyya! Now what am I supposed to say?
Luckily for Aakash, Naaniji interrupted the Raizada siblings' conversation just then, "Enough! Enough of this discussion! I am talking about something else here!" Arnav and Anjali both opened their mouths to argue and Naaniji glared at them making both of them shut up right away.
"I know what you think about marriage Arnav, and I do know your views too Anjali! Infact, I even know what are Aakash's thoughts regarding marriage. But for once, I am not interested in this argument or whether my grandsons marry or not! My topic is entirely off the tangent here!", Naaniji spoke and Arnav raised an eyebrow. Naaniji and not interested about finding a bahu? This is something serious. It seemed that Anjali and Aakash realised the same thing as both looked at Naaniji attentively. Khushi simply blinked.
"As I was saying", Naaniji said trying to bring the conversation back on track, "My friend Vidisha is throwing a party. I am thinking that this might be a good trial run for Khushi. Why not take Khushi there and see if she can act like us? That way we will get to know where she stands in her training! "
Arnav frowned, "But she is not ready Naani!"
Anjali piped in, "Arre! But how do you know she is ready or not unless you test her! Lets test her Chote! We will know what she is good at and where she needs more training!"
Arnav looked at everyone gathered around him. Naaniji looking at him expectantly, Anjali looking eager, Aakash looking excited and Khushi looking nervous and yet not against the idea and Arnav finally nodded. Aakash and Anjali cheered loudly while Khushi and Naaniji grinned at each other excitedly.
"Then its final!", Naaniji announced, "In two weeks, Khushi is coming to the Vidisha's party!"
